DoT Launches Sanchar Saathi Portal to Track Lost or Stolen Mobile Phones Across India: All Details

People will be now able to block and track their lost or stolen mobile phones across India via the Sanchar Saathi portal launched by the Department of Telecom on Tuesday.

Union telecom minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that through Sanchar Saathi Portal, people will be able to block, track and check the genuineness of a used device before buying them.

“First leg of Sanchar Saathi portal is CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register). If you lose your mobile phone, then you can visit this portal. There will be some identity verification, requirement of undertaking and immediately after this the portal will interact with law enforcement agencies and telecom service providers and block your lost mobile phone,” Vaishnaw said.

He said that Prime Minister has a clear vision that a lot of attention needs to be paid to user safety and the facilities under the Sanchar Saathi portal are aligned to his vision.

When asked about measures that the government is taking to check fraud through calls on WhatsApp, the minister said that Meta owned app has agreed to deactivate services linked to any mobile phone number engaged in fraudulent activities.

“We have actively engaged with WhatsApp and they have agreed that customer safety is most important. All the OTT platforms are actively cooperating to deregister the users which have been detected as fraud users,” Vaishnaw said.

He said that 36 lakh mobile connections have been disconnected for fraud and simultaneously their WhatsApp account has been blocked.

The minister said that there is Know Your Mobile facility Sanchar Saathi which help users verify the genuineness of second-hand mobile phone before buying them.

“We feel confident that at least with these reforms, at least the rising trends in cyber frauds will be seriously controlled and we will be able to bring them down,” Vaishnaw said.

He said that there is TAFCOP facility on Sanchar Saathi to help people check if there are other mobile numbers working in their name without their permission or knowledge.

The Sanchar Saathi facilities have been developed by C-DoT. The technology development arm under the Department of Telecom has been able to add feature to check use of cloned mobile phones across all telecom networks.

The government has made it mandatory to disclose IMEI— a 15-digit unique numeric identifier of mobile devices before their sale in India.

The mobile networks will have access to the list of approved IMEI numbers which will check the entry of any unauthorised mobile phones on their network.

Telecom operators and CEIR system will have visibility into IMEI number of the device and mobile number linked to it and the information is being used in some states to track your lost or stolen mobiles through CEIR.

One of the common practices is that miscreants after stealing mobile phone change IMEI number of the device which prevents tracking and blocking of such handsets.

The CEIR will be able to block any cloned mobile phones on the network with the help of various databases.

C-DOT has been running the pilot of the technology in some of the telecom circles including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and North East. Recently, Karnataka Police recovered and handed over 2,500 lost mobile phones to their owners using the CEIR system. Apple already has a system to track lost mobile phones with the help of Apple id but major issues have been around Android mobile phones.

With the new system in place, it will be futile to use stolen mobile phones. The system developed under Sanchar Saathi can also help in curbing the smuggling of phones.

Haryana Police Identifies About 28,000 Phone Numbers Being Misused for Cybercrimes

About 28,000 mobile phone numbers being misused for committing cybercrimes have been identified and they will be blocked soon, a senior Haryana Police officer said on Thursday.

The 27,824 phone numbers were identified through cybercrime helpline number 1930 and complaint portal cybercrime.gov.in, Additional Director General of Police (Crime) O P Singh said.

The details of these numbers have been sent to the field units for getting them uploaded on the CyberSafe portal operated by the India Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Union home ministry in order to block them, the senior police officer said.

Accoring to Singh, Gurugram (7,142), Faridabad (3,896), Panchkula (1,420), Sonipat (1,408), Rohtak (1,045), Hisar (1,228) and Ambala (1,101) were among the districts with the maximum number of mobile numbers used for committing cybercrimes.

In a communication to all district nodal officers for cybercrimes, Singh urged them to upload mobile numbers being misused for committing cybercrimes on the CyberSafe portal.

The field units have also been called upon “to carry out IMEI linkage analysis through the mobile handset being used to operate these numbers, find out other mobile numbers being used by the handset and upload these numbers on CyberSafe for their blocking by the Department of Telecommunications”.

Cumulatively, over 47,000 complaints of cybercrimes till September this year have been reported on helpline number 1930 and 29 cyber police stations, and 309 cyber desks in territorial police stations across the state.

Police have also recovered and returned more than Rs. 15 crore of defrauded money to the victims, Singh said.

October is being observed as National Cyber Security month, he said.

To spread awareness about cybersecurity tips like recognising and reporting phishing, using strong passwords, keeping software updated, using multi-factor authentication and reporting cyber frauds and harassment, the Haryana Police has from October 1-25 organised 2,526 mass engagement programmes attracting 19.7 lakh people.

Through social media, the Haryana Police reached out to another 26.7 lakh people, taking the total to 46.4 lakhs, which one out of five people living in the state, Singh said.

“We are confident to cross the 50-lakh mark in the remaining four days. The resultant heightened awareness is finding reflection in increase in the number of per day reporting of cybercrime to 1930,” Singh said.

Redmi Note 11 Pro 2023 Gets FCC, EEC Certifications, Launch Imminent: Report

Redmi Note 11 Pro variant could be unveiled soon by the Chinese smartphone company. The Redmi Note 11 lineup, which included the Redmi Note 11 Pro and the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G, debuted in India earlier this year. It appears that the Xiaomi sub-brand will soon launch a refreshed model from this series, believed to be bearing the moniker Redmi Note 11 Pro 2023. This handset has been reportedly spotted on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) database and has received EEC certifications.

According to a recent report by MySmartPrice, a Redmi smartphone bearing the model number 2209116AG has been spotted on the FCC database. The alleged listing suggests that this handset is named as Redmi Note 11 Pro 2023. Furthermore, it mentions that the handset runs on MIUI 13 out-of-the-box, which could be based on Android 12.

In related news, a past XiaomiUI report spotted the Redmi 2209116AG model on the IMEI database. The supposed listing in itself did not reveal any details regarding this handset; however, the report speculates that the Redmi Note 11 Pro 2023 could be a rebadged Redmi Note 10 Pro.

If true, then the Redmi Note 11 Pro 2023 might boast similar specifications to the handset that arrived in India last year. The Redmi Note 10 Pro was priced at Rs. 15,999 for its base 6GB RAM + 64GB storage model at launch. It sports a 6.67-inch full-HD+ Super AMOLED display with 1,200 nits of peak brightness and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. Under the hood, it packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G SoC, paired with Adreno 618 GPU. The handset sports a 64-megapixel quad rear camera setup and a 16-megapixel selfie shooter.

As of now, Redmi has not officially confirmed the existence of the Redmi Note 11 Pro 2023. However, considering that the handset has been popping up on many certification sites, we might get an official announcement soon.
