Google Pixel 8a was recently unveiled globally and in India. It is powered by an in-house Tensor G3 SoC and joins the Pixel 8 series as the budget offering in the lineup. The smartphone, which runs Android 14 out-of-the-box, has now received its first software upgrade. This update introduced an AI-backed feature, previously available on only the latest flagship handsets, to the phone. Notably, the Google I/O event, an annual developers’ conference held earlier this week also witnessed the reveal of several other AI-based features including the update of the Gemini 1.5 Pro.

Google is quietly rolling out the first software update for its latest Pixel smartphone. The almost 190MB update comes with a few upgrades, which include the May 2024 Android security patch and Google’s AI-powered wallpaper generator. There are no more notable changes with this update.

The generative AI feature was previously exclusive to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro handsets. The tool helps create unique wallpapers prompted by user-specified keywords and themes. A customised version of the feature can also be found on Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S24 series.

The Google Pixel 8a comes with a Tensor G3 SoC, a 4,492mAh battery with 18W fast charging, a 64-megapixel dual rear camera unit, a 13-megapixel selfie shooter and a 6.1-inch 120Hz full-HD+ OLED screen. Offered in Aloe, Bay, Obsidian and Porcelain colour options, the Google Pixel 8a starts in India at Rs. 52,999 for the 8GB + 128GB, while the 8GB + 256GB variant is priced at Rs. 59,999.

Google Pixel 8a With Tensor G3 SoC, 64-Megapixel Camera Launched in India: Price, Specifications

Google’s Pixel 7a sure turned out to be an impressive affordable option from Google when it launched last year. It brought a ton of new hardware features that were previously missing in its A-series of devices. Ahead of Google’s software announcements scheduled to take place on May 14, 2024, the company has now announced its successor to the Pixel 7a called the Pixel 8a. The Google Pixel 8a gets a refreshed design, the Tensor G3 SoC, and also brings along all of its AI smarts previously reserved for the premium Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones.

Google Pixel 8a price in India, availability

Google’s Pixel 8a will be available in both 128GB and 256GB storage options globally. The brand continues to stick to 8GB of RAM for both of these storage variants. Google is also bringing both of these variants to India with the 128GB variant priced at Rs. 52,999 and the 256GB version priced at Rs. 59,999. The handset will be available in all four — Aloe, Bay, Obsidian, and Porcelain — colourways as well. The phone is available for pre-order on Flipkart now with sales beginning at 6:30AM on May 14. Google is also offering bank offers of Rs. 4,000 and 12 month no-cost EMI on select bank cards. Those who pre-order the Pixel 8a can also purchase the Pixel Buds A-series at just Rs. 999.

Google Pixel 8a specifications

The Google Pixel 8a offers a refreshed design made out of glass (screen), polycarbonate (rear panels) and aluminium (frame). Its design, which now appears very similar to its newer Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, maintains its IP67 certification from the Pixel 7a as well. The handset measures 152.1mm x 72.7mm x 8.9mm and weighs 188 grams.

The newer and more rounded design has a flat 6.1-inch Super Actua display, which the brand claims is the first A-series device to sport one. However, this OLED panel now refreshes at 120Hz versus the 90Hz refresh rate on the Pixel 7a. The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 just like the previous model.

Like last year, Google has upgraded the Pixel 8a’s SoC to the latest Tensor G3 (along with the Titan M2 security coprocessor) and it brings along a ton of features which were previously not possible on the A-series because of the Tensor G2. From Circle to search, to AI image editing (Magic Editor), Audio Magic Eraser, Best Take, and more. The phone offers 8GB of LPDDR5x RAM and a up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage.

Communication standards include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and support for the usual GPS navigation systems. The phone only offers space for one physical SIM card along with one virtual eSIM. The handset can be secured using its in-display fingerprint reader or face unlock.

The phone is backed by a 4,492mAh battery and supports 18W wired fast charging. Like the Pixel 7a, the Pixel 8a also offers wireless charging but at the same 7.5W (Qi charging standard).

As for the cameras, Google retained everything from the previous model. There’s a 64-megapixel (f/1.89 aperture) primary camera and a 13-megapixel (f/2.2 aperture) ultrawide camera at the back. You also get a 13-megapixel front facing camera for selfies.

Google’s Pixel 8a boots to Android 14 with the usual Pixel user experience and is promised to get seven years of software and security updates, which also includes its quarterly Pixel Feature Drops, that add new software features.

Google I/O 2023 saw the search giant repeatedly tell us that it cares about AI, alongside the launch of its first foldable phone and Pixel-branded tablet. This year, the company is going to supercharge its apps, services, and Android operating system with AI technology. We discuss this and more on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Google Pixel 8a Video Showing AI Features Leaks; Promotional Images Indicate 7-Year Software Support

Google Pixel 8a is expected to make its debut next month at the company’s annual Google I/O conference that begins on May 14. While the company is yet to announce plans to launch a new handset, details of the purported Pixel 8a have been spotted online several times over the past few months. With a few weeks to go before its anticipated debut, a promotional video showing off the handset’s AI features has been leaked. Meanwhile, other Pixel exclusive features and software support for the upcoming Pixel 8a has also surfaced online.

Tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (X: @OnLeaks) leaked a promo video for the Pixel 8a in collaboration with MySmartPrice that shows several Pixel-exclusive features expected to arrive on the upcoming smartphone. The video shows the Pixel 8a will include Google’s Best Take feature that swaps out faces from multiple group photos or burst photos to ‘replace’ faces with eyes closed or unwanted expressions.

Circle to Search — another feature currently available on select Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones — will also be available on the Pixel 8a, according to the leaked video that also suggests the smartphone will feature Google’s Audio Magic Eraser feature that is designed to remove unwanted background sounds from recorded videos using artificial intelligence (AI). Live translation will for voice calls will also be supported on the Pixel 8a, as per the video.

Meanwhile, images leaked by Android Headlines also show that the Pixel 8a will arrive with the Best Take and Audio Magic Eraser features. It will also feature Call Assist, offer Circle to Search Support, and Google VPN support — a feature the company is set to shut down on June 10.

The leaked teasers also state that the phone will be equipped with Tensor G3 chip and get “seven years of security updates”, but it is currently unclear whether the phone will get the same number of Android OS upgrades as the more premium models in the Pixel 8 series that are also equipped with the same processor. The company is expected to reveal more details about the handset in the days leading up to its anticipated debut on May 14.

Google Pixel 8a Design and Colour Options Leak, Said to Debut at Google I/O 2024

Google Pixel 8a — the successor to last year’s Pixel 7a — will reportedly be launched at Google I/O 2024. Ahead of the arrival of the purported smartphone that is said to arrive as an affordable version of the Pixel 8, Android Headlines has published 360-degree images of all four colour options of the upcoming Pixel 8a handset. As per previous reports, the Google Pixel 8a will be equipped with a 4,500mAh battery and run on the company’s Tensor G3 chipset.

While the rumoured Pixel 8a is yet to be revealed by the company, there have been several leaks of the handset’s design and hardware specifications. According to the publication, the Pixel 8a will be launched next month in four colour options — Bay (Blue), Mint (Green), Obsidian (Black), and Porcelain (White) colour options.

The images leaked by the publication suggest that the Pixel 8a will bear a very close resemblance to the Pixel 8 that was launched last year. The latter arrived in Hazel, Mint, Obsidian, and Rose colour options, which means that the purported Pixel 8a will share at least two-colour options with its more advanced sibling.

Earlier this week, a live image of the Pixel 8a surfaced online, giving us a good look at what could be the design for Google’s next A-series Pixel phone. According to the leaked image, the phone’s rear panel will have a rear camera module that is similar to the Pixel 8, while the rear panel will have a matte finish, unlike the Pixel 7a.

According to previous reports, the Pixel 8a could arrive with Google’s Tensor G3, the same chip that powers the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, along with 8GB of RAM. The phone is also said to sport a 6.1-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels) OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate, and 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness.

The Pixel 8a is also tipped to debut with the same camera configuration as the Pixel 7a — a 64-megapixel primary camera along with a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera. It is also said to pack a 5,000mAh battery with support for 27W wired fast charging. We can expect to hear more about the Pixel 8a ahead of its expected debut at Google I/O 2024, which begins on May 14.

Google Pixel 8a Spotted on Bluetooth SIG Website; Launch Appears Imminent

Google is believed to unveil the Pixel 8a at its annual I/O developer conference in May. The Pixel 7a successor is expected to look similar to the vanilla Pixel 8 and could offer upgrades like Tensor G3 SoC and 120Hz display among others. Google is yet to confirm the launch of the Pixel 8a, but ahead of it, the phone has been spotted on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) certification website with several model numbers. The Pixel 8a earlier appeared on the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website.

The Bluetooth SIG website has listed the Pixel 8a in different variants with model numbers G8HNN, GKV4X, G6GPR, and G576D. As per the FCC listings that popped up last month, these model numbers are said to be associated with the Pixel 8a. The listing has April 4 as the publishing date and shows that the handset will have Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. The listing suggests that the launch of the new device is around the corner.

The Bluetooth SIG listing for Pixel 8a was first spotted by MySmartPrice.

Google has not yet confirmed the existence of Pixel 8a, but previous reports have suggested possible specifications of the smartphone. It is expected to come with a 6.1-inch full-HD+ (1,080×2,400 pixels) OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate and 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness.

The Pixel 8a is rumoured to be powered by the Tensor G3 chipset like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It could get a dual rear camera setup comprising a 64-megapixel primary camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) alongside a 13-megapixel ultra wide-angle secondary sensor. It is said to carry a 13-megapixel front camera. There could be a DisplayPort output support as well.

Google Pixel 8a is said to go official in more new countries including the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Google Pixel Phone Spotted on Certification Site With 5,000mAh Battery, Could be Pixel 8a

The Google Pixel 8 series, with a base Pixel 8 and a Pixel 8 Pro model, was unveiled in October 2023. These two handsets are expected to be joined by a Pixel 8a model. The company has yet to confirm the smartphone, but it has surfaced online several times. Over the past few months, details about the purported phone have suggested some expected features and design elements. A new report indicates that the Google Pixel 8a, expected to launch later this year, was spotted on a certification site that hinted at the handset’s battery details.

A 91Mobiles report claims to have spotted a Google Pixel phone with the model number GH2MB on the UL Demko certification website. The listing suggests that the phone may come with a battery with a rated capacity of 4,942mAh, likely to be listed with a typical capacity of 5,000mAh. The report says that the model could be the Google Pixel 8a. This suggests a considerable upgrade over the Google Pixel 7a‘s 4,385mAh battery.

However, the report notes that since Google is known to pack larger batteries into its flagship models, this listing could also be a Google Pixel 9 series handset. For instance, the Pixel 8 Pro carries a 5,050mAh battery, whereas the base Google Pixel 8 model is backed by a 4,575mAh battery.

The Google Pixel 8a is expected to be announced in May this year at the company’s I/O event. The purported model is expected to support 27W wired charging and measure 152.1mm x 72.6mm x 8.9mm in size. Leaked retail packaging of the handset showed it in a black colour option with a dual camera setup alongside an LED flash arranged horizontally on a raised, visor-like camera module. Previously, leaked renders of the smartphone have appeared with a similar design to the base Pixel 8 model.

The Google Pixel 8 launched in India at Rs. 75,999 for the 8GB + 128GB option, while the 8GB + 256GB model was listed at Rs. 82,999. The Pixel 8 Pro is priced at Rs. 1,06,999 for the 12GB + 128GB variant, and the high-end 12GB + 256GB option is marked at Rs. 1,13,999.

Google Pixel 8a Dummy Unit Leaks, Hints at Rounder Design, Dual Rear Camera Setup

Google Pixel 8a is expected to debut next year as the successor to the Pixel 7a that was unveiled this year. The company’s more affordable version of the Pixel 8 isn’t likely to be unveiled for a few more months — based on Google’s previous midrange phone launch schedule, but details of the phone have already begun to surface online. A tipster has now leaked images of the purported Pixel 8a, giving us an idea of what to expect in terms of design and dimensions.

Tipster David Kowalski (@xleaks7) leaked (via Phandroid) a metal dummy unit of the Pixel 8a on X (formerly known as Twitter) showing the front and rear sides of the phone. It is currently unclear whether the aluminium dummy model has been created based on leaked information, but it suggests that the Pixel 8a will feature a design that is very similar to the Pixel 8.

Pixel 8a leaked renders hint at the smartphone’s design

The image of the dummy unit shows the purported Pixel 8a sporting a display with thick bezels — these appear much larger than the Pixel 8 — and a centre-aligned hole punch cutout to house the selfie camera. It is tipped to measure 153.44 x 72.74 x 8.94mm, which is similar to its predecessor.

A second image shared by the tipster shows the rear side of the Pixel 8a that suggests a dual rear camera setup. Detailed camera specifications have not been revealed. The Pixel 7a was equipped with a 64-megapixel primary camera and a 13-megapixel secondary ultra-wide camera.

Last month, leaked renders of the Pixel 8a surfaced online, suggesting that it will feature a 6.1-inch display. As a result, the midrange handset could be slightly smaller than the Pixel 8 that was recently launched in India and global markets alongside the Pixel 8 Pro. Those leaked images also showed the Pixel 8a sporting larger bezels than the standard model.

At the time, tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (@OnLeaks) claimed that the Pixel 8a would measure 152.1 x 72.6 x 8.9mm — lower than the measurements of its predecessor. This tipster has a better track record when it comes to leaking details of smartphones before they are unveiled, but we can expect to see more details about the handset in the months before it is launched.
