Emmys 2022 hit record low with 25% drop in viewers since last year

“TV’s biggest night” of 2022 was its smallest in history.

The 74th Annual Emmy Awards on Monday, hosted by Kenan Thompson, attracted just 5.9 million viewers to NBC — a 25% decrease in viewership from last year’s awards on CBS, according to preliminary Nielsen data.

Additionally, this year’s Emmys had a 1.0 rating among adults aged 18 to 49 — the lowest score they’ve ever received among core audiences.

In constrast, the Emmys saw a 16% spike in viewership in 2021, compared to 2020’s 6.37 million viewers.

Since the advent of streaming apps, the diversity of television offered today has posed a challenge for Emmys producers, now unable to find a more cohesive audience. The last time it cracked double-digit millions was in 2018, drawing 10.2 million fans.

The show reached its highest viewership level in the year 2000 with a whopping 21.8 million viewers.

Highlights of this year’s show included “Abbott Elementary” actress Sheryl Lee Ralph’s singing Dianne Reeves’ “Endangered Species” during her acceptance speech, and “White Lotus” star Jennifer Coolidge’s chaotic, but on-brand speech, cut too short.

HBO’s “The White Lotus” cast and crew won all five of the categories for which they were nominated, but the network’s other standout, “Succession,” and “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+, each won the night’s top categories for Outstanding Comedy and Drama series, respectively.

Thompson kicked off the show alongside backup dancers, grooving to remixes of popular TV show theme songs, including those of “Friends,” “Law & Order” and “Game of Thrones.”

The “SNL” comic later deemed history-making Emmy winner Zendaya “too old” to date Leonardo DiCaprio and slammed “Succession” for its lack of diversity later during his traditional monologue.

His “Good Burger” co-star Kel Mitchell briefly appeared for a bit at the ceremony’s bar, alongside Jason Sudeikis and Kumail Nanjiani — to the delight of, albeit few, nostalgic Millennial viewers.

Emmys 2022 red carpet: All the best-dressed celebrities

Held on Monday, September 12, the 2022 Emmys celebrated the best television shows and performances of the year — and Hollywood’s hottest small-screen stars hit the red carpet in some truly excellent styles.

“Euphoria” babes Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney both went for old-school glamour in Valentino and Oscar de la Renta, respectively, while Quinta Brunson and Lily James looked like goddesses in their bronze gowns.

Sequins and sparkle were a major trend — with Sandra Oh, HoYeon Jung and Reese Witherspoon among the many who opted for all-over embellishment — while Lizzo chose to let her Giambattista Valli gown’s explosion of red-hot ruffles made an impact instead.

Below, our best-dressed picks from this year’s Emmys.

The “Euphoria” favorite is typically quite the daring dresser, but with this bow-tied black Valentino ballgown, she proved she can do Old Hollywood elegance as well as fashion fearlessness.

It’s “About Damn Time” Lizzo made her Emmys debut — and in this ravishing red tulle Giambattista Valli Haute Couture confection teamed with Lorraine Schwartz diamonds, she might’ve just stolen the whole show.

Amanda Seyfried

No black turtlenecks for the star of “The Dropout” tonight! Seyfried went full “mermaid” in a shimmering lilac look by Armani Privé paired with Cartier jewels, and looked mesmerizing.

The “Killing Eve” lead’s sequined Rodarte pantsuit and matching plunging top were pure purple perfection; Cathy Waterman pieces featuring coordinating colored stones completed the look.

While her “Euphoria” character might favor crop tops and strappy swimsuits, Sweeney nodded to a more elegant era with this custom bustled Oscar de la Renta gown covered in metal thread work.

The creator and star of “Abbott Elementary” made her dazzling Emmys debut in a copper-colored Dolce & Gabbana gown that fit her like a glove. Bonus points for the sheer gloves and Jared Lehr jewels, both of which matched her metallic dress.

The stylish “Squid Game” star and model has a long history with Louis Vuitton; in 2016, she walked her first Paris Fashion Week show for the luxury label, and in 2021, she became a Vuitton ambassador. Her Emmys look by the fashion house, featuring a tweed patterned rendered in colorful sequins, was both playful and polished.

The “Morning Show” actress was a beauty in blue on Emmys night, accessorizing her all-over-embellished Armani Privé dress with over 210 carats of Tiffany & Co. aquamarines and blue zircons.

We’re not quite sure about that midriff cutout, but there’s no denying the lush brown velvet and intricate floral embroidery on the “Ozark” star’s Gucci look are blooming beautiful.

The “Yellowjackets” actress’ slinky Fendi Couture slip was a marvel of texture, covered in top to bottom with metallic embroidered sequins that almost looked like fur or feathers; she even carried a matching clutch.

A handful of men ditched traditional black tuxes for white ones at this year’s Emmys — but none looked better than the toweringly tall “Succession” star, who styled his double-breasted Dior Men look with Fred Leighton diamond collar clips.

Kenan Thompson Humiliates Leonardo DiCaprio With Sick Burn During Emmys 2022 Monologue

After a lackluster opening number that focused on interpretive dance, Kenan Thompson actually told jokes at the 2022 Emmys. Thompson took aim at Netflix’s flagging fortunes and Yellowjackets‘s relegation to Showtime, but he saved his biggest burn for Leonardo DiCaprio and his well-known penchant for only dating women under the age of 25.  For that last joke, Thompson roped in Euphoria star and Best Actress nominee Zendaya.

“Zendaya just turned 26 last week,” Thompson said. “26 is a weird age in Hollywood. I mean, you’re young enough to play a high school student, but you’re too old to date Leonardo DiCaprio.”  The crowd laughed at the joke as Zendaya put her head in her hands.

Thompson went on to crack a joke about Succession‘s extremely white cast — “Succession is the only show that’s got three brothers and no brothers.” — before making a jab at how long it would take Only Murders in the Building stars Steve Martin and Martin Short to get to the stage. (It’s an old age joke. Co-star Selena Gomez pouted and comforted Short, who was seated next to her.)

Other targets of Thompson’s impish humor included the streaming and premium networks whose presence has overcome the Emmys in recent years.

“A lot of the shows nominated for Best Drama were hard to watch. Stranger Things was hard to watch because it was so scary. Squid Game was hard to watch because it was so violent. And Yellowjackets was so hard to watch because it was on Showtime.” That last joke even got jokes from the Yellowjackets table.

But Showtime had it easy compared to Netflix, whose plummeting stock shares are clearly the talk of the industry right now.

“[Squid Game] is a contest you enter when you’re in massive debt and desperate for money. Joining the cast next season? Netflix.” Thompson said to muted laughter, which he ate up.

Later, after praising Abbott Elementary for their choice to donate their campaign funds to schools in need, Thompson quipped, “That’s what it’s all about. It’s about helping those in need. That’s why all my salary from tonight’s show is going straight to Netflix.”

What Time Are the Emmy Awards On? How to Watch the Emmys Live Online

Now is the time for television’s biggest night. The 2022 Primetime Emmys air tonight, September 12, on NBC. And this year it seems like it’s going to be a good one. Succession, The White Lotus, Ted Lasso, and Dopesick will enter this evening as the most nominated shows of the year. On the network side of things, HBO will be leading the night. Between HBO and HBO Max, they’re entering this race with a combined 50 major nominations. That’s a huge leap from the networks in second and third place — Hulu, with 26 major nominations, and Netflix, with 23.

Who will win? Who will lose? And who will be the first celebrity to make a joke about The Slap? Consider this your guide to everything you need to know.

What Channel Are the Emmys On?

You have two different options when it comes to watching the 2022 Primetime Emmys: NBC and Peacock. So as long as you have access to one of those channels, you’re golden.

What Time Does the Emmy Awards 2021 Red Carpet Begin?

The glitz and glamor of Hollywood kicks off on Sunday, September 12 starting at 6/5c p.m. But instead of premiering on NBC, the red carpet will be on E! If you have cable or a live TV skinny bundle, you’re already set to stream the pre-show.

What Time Do the Emmys Start?

Want to skip the red carpet and get straight to the awards? We get it. The 2022 Emmys premiere on NBC starting at 8/7c p.m.

How Can I Find an Emmy Awards 2021 Live Stream? How to Watch the Emmy Awards Online

If you have cable, then you’re all set. Just make sure your TV is set to NBC on or before 8/7c p.m. tonight. You can even use your cable username and password to stream the Emmys from anywhere in case you’re going to be away from your television.

Did you ditch cable? Not a problem. NBC is available to stream on most live TV skinny bundles, including fuboTV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, and Sling TV. You can also go the old-fashioned route and get some rabbit ears. Most transmitters will pick up your local NBC station.

There is one final way you can watch. This year for the first time ever, the 2022 Primetime Emmys will be available to stream on Peacock. Typically, a monthly subscription to Peacock will cost you $4.99 a month, but thanks to a special promotion, subscriptions are currently available for only $1.99 a month for certain eligible subscribers. That’s for the plan with ads. If you want to opt for the ad-free option, that will cost you $9.99 a month.

Can I Watch the Emmy Awards 2021 Live on Hulu?

If you have Hulu + Live TV, you will be able to watch the Emmys using Hulu. But know that this plan doesn’t apply to Hulu’s basic plans.

Will the Emmy Awards Be Available for Next-Day Streaming on Hulu?

Unfortunately, no. If you don’t have Hulu + Live TV, you will not be able to watch the Emmys on Hulu.

Who Will Host the 2022 Emmys?

It’s a full NBC night. Kenan Thompson, the longest-running cast member in Saturday Night Live‘s history, will host this year’s awards show.
