People & Power investigates the new satellite space race and its implications for the future.

Space may be infinite, but the Earth’s orbit is not. Since 2019, the number of satellites circling the planet has more than doubled. Companies like Elon Musk’s Starlink, OneWeb, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and even entities as large as the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA) have launched thousands of satellites in hopes of gaining an upper hand in the lucrative market of orbital space around the Earth.

The commercial possibilities of space offer the potential to empower the roughly three billion people who are currently without broadband internet and provide an invaluable tool for researchers. But there is potential peril embedded in the promise. Expanded internet access increases the surveillance capabilities of government and private entities. The military use of satellites has already resulted in sabre-rattling between world powers. Reflected light from satellites could change the way we see the stars in the night sky. And every new satellite increases the chance of a disastrous collision which could set off a chain of events that could render the Earth’s orbit unusable.

Filmmaker Mariam Shahin looks back at how a blockade and wars in Gaza have reduced the hopes of its people to dust.

Documentary director Mariam Shahin has been making films about Gaza for more than 30 years. She produced a documentary for Al Jazeera English in 2009, which told the stories of six sets of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip whom she had followed for four years. When she moved to Gaza in 2005, she felt a powerful sense of optimism after the Israeli withdrawal. But by 2009, war had badly damaged its infrastructure, neighbourhoods, businesses and communities – and that optimism had evaporated.

In the middle of the current war, Mariam looks back at these stories and reflects on the wasted potential, lost hope and devastated lives after 16 years of blockade, poverty and conflict.

Over the past 20 years, religious organisations from the Catholic Church to Jehovah’s Witnesses have had a reckoning with cases of child sexual abuse. Many states have tried to tackle the abuse by making clergy mandatory reporters of abuse to officials, just like doctors, therapists and teachers are. However, more than 30 states in the United States do not require church officials to report knowledge or allegations of child abuse if the information is deemed privileged, specifically coming from confession or counselling. It means that abuse can all too often be hidden – and survivors are left without recourse or justice.

Fault Lines investigates how state laws in the US can lead to child sexual abuse in religious communities going unpunished.

This is what 24 hours of our lives in Gaza look like | Close Up | Israel-Palestine conflict

We asked 10 people in Gaza to record moments of their day. The result is inspiring and heartbreaking.

Seventy days have passed since the Israeli military launched an all-out assault on Gaza following an attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7. In those 70 days, more than 18,800 Palestinians have been killed, most of them children and women.

Al Jazeera’s digital documentary series, Close Up, reached out to Palestinians in Gaza in November and asked them to record whatever they could over the course of a day on any devices that still worked – because who better to tell the stories of life in Gaza than the people themselves who are living there through the horror of siege and war?

This compilation of people’s moments provides a snapshot of just one of these 70 days of war when even the most mundane of tasks like showering, doing laundry and preparing meals has become impossibly hard, when fear is constant and palpable that at any moment death could strike from above as Israel relentlessly bombs the entire length of the besieged strip from morning to night.

The result is a story of resilience and courage.

But will the people of Uganda gain any benefit from the controversial exploitation of their oil – and can any such profits be seen to balance out the environmental damage to the country?

But it also details the growing opposition to Pornhub, from anti-trafficking organizations seeking justice for victims.
