New York Giants’ Daniel Jones quietly shines in training camp debut

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones opened the team’s 2023 training camp with a stellar performance that would have shut even his most ardent detractors up.

Jones, in his second season working under head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, spread the ball around liberally to all of his old and new weapons and moved in and out of the pocket as well as anyone could remember.

Jones tossed three touchdowns to tight end Darren Waller, two to wide receiver Parris Campbell, and another to veteran Cole Beasley — all new faces this summer.

In addition, Jones continued his rapport with wideout Isaiah Hodgins and tight end Daniel Bellinger, as well as with another familiar face: running back Saquon Barkley.

Oh, and the offense did not turn the football over all day.

Jones is finally coming into a camp where he’ll have less learning to do, less chaos, making this year much more stable than years past for him.

He’s had four head coaches and an army of coordinators and coaches barking in his ear during this four-year career in New York. Now, that noise has been streamlined and centralized under Daboll and Kafka.

“I think it’s nice not to be learning completely new at this point,” Jones told reporters on Wednesday. “We’re picking up from things we started with in the spring, and we’ll continue to build off of it, but we’re always learning and growing and kind of evolving the offense in whatever way is going to make us better.”

Jones was asked if he was surprised at how the offense has been stabilized under the new regime.

“I don’t know if I’m surprised. I think, like I said, we’ve got a lot of really good dudes, a lot of really good players who have performed and done the right things on and off the field. It’s fun to be in a locker room like that. It’s fun to be with a group of guys working together, guys who do all the right things. I don’t know if I’m surprised, but we’re looking forward to getting to work and kind of staying right here in training camp right now.”

New York Giants’ Daniel Jones can be a top-5 QB, says Tiki Barber

New York Giants Ring of Honoree and all-time great, Tiki Barber, rarely lauded Eli Manning as one the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

Barber’s opinion of Manning’s predecessor, Daniel Jones, is quite different, however. He believes Jones could be on his way to become a “top five” player at his position.

In short, Tiki believes Daniel Jones has what it takes to become “elite”.

Speaking on his radio show with Evan Roberts on WFAN in New York, the Giants’ all-time leading rusher was confident in his assessment of Jones, even though Jets fan Roberts openly laughed at the mere notion of Jones being mentioned in the same breath as Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and others.

Let’s keep in mind that Jones is being tutored by the same minds that tutored Mahomes and Allen.

Giants current head coach, Brian Daboll, is largely credited with Allen’s development, and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka was Mahomes’ position coach in Kansas City.

Barber’s statement isn’t too far off. With an uptick of passing yards and touchdowns, Jones’ status will be elevated, as he has all the other numbers that quarterbacks are rated on.

Fantasy football enthusiasts already know Jones’ value. In 2022, he ranked eighth among quarterbacks and 20th overall on DraftKings with 303.0 fantasy points.

With an upgraded receiving corps. now at his disposal, he can easily crack into the top five this year.

Giants’ Daniel Jones is one of NFL’s most accurate and inaccurate QBs

When it comes to Daniel Jones, the New York Giants’ fifth-year quarterback, critics have had varied opinions of him over his career.

Some believe he is an ascending player who will eventually lead the Giants to greater things. Others believe he is marginally talented and what you’ve seen is what you’re gonna get.

That latter opinion is illustrated in a recent breakdown by Pro Football Focus gauging the accuracy of NFL quarterbacks.

Jones finished fifth in the ‘accurate’ category (64.6%) but, at the same time, was third overall in the ‘uncatchable and inaccurate’ group (15.2%).

“Accurate” is defined as “when a passer puts the ball on the receiver’s frame so that he doesn’t need to adjust or slow down to make the play and continue after the catch. Accurate passes have been completed 93.3% of the time since 2020.”

“Uncatchable and inaccurate” is defined as “even despite a Herculean effort from the receiver, there is almost no shot of the pass being completed. This includes overthrows and underthrows, as well as passes thrown too far in front or behind. Uncatchable and inaccurate passes have been completed 2.0% of the time since 2020.”

Fans have seen plenty of both from Jones over his four years here with the Giants. They are hoping he can graduate to the ‘accurate plus’ group this season.

Some NFL executives, coaches view Giants’ Daniel Jones as a top 10 QB

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones had an up-and-down career since debuting in 2019, largely due to coaching and personnel turnover. But that changed in 2022.

The Duke product took a massive leap last season. Jones led the Giants to their first postseason berth since 2016, thus silencing many of his biggest critics. He turned them into believers by the season’s end.

In fact, some NFL executives, coaches, and scouts now view DJ as a top-10 quarterback. And while he didn’t crack the top 10 in ESPN’s recent quarterback poll, he did receive some votes.

Earning an honorable mention among the league’s top talent evaluators is noteworthy considering how far away Jones seemed just two seasons ago. It’s likely to come as a shock to many fans who still believe Jones is a bottom-tier quarterback.

Not everyone in NFL circles are sold on the Giants’ QB, however. But there are many others like Chris Simms and former Giant Tiki Barber who have bought in.

Jones is viewed as a potential breakout player in 2023, while his teammate, Lawrence Cager, is expecting an MVP-caliber leap from DJ.

With the improvements on the offense, Jones could be in for an even bigger leap in 2023. If DJ’s stats improve, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he could crack the top 10 on this list next offseason. At least in the opinion of executives, coaches, and scouts.

New York Giants’ Darren Waller raves about QB Daniel Jones

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and tight end Darren Waller have only been working together for a few short months but they’ve already begun to bond and develop a notable chemistry.

The two have spent extra time working together both at team facilities and away from them, and Waller says the process has played out sans ego. He recently praised Jones as talented and humble while appearing on the Giants Huddle Podcast.

“It’s been awesome,” Waller said of working with Jones. “We’ve been putting extra sessions in whenever we got the time. If it’s on the weekend, if it’s on an off day, like, it’s been really cool to pick his brain and see how he wants things done. Some (things) are a little different than what I’m used to, some are a lot of the same, you know, it’s just different terminology, so getting to work with him has been really easy.

“We’ve been able to grow together, come back to each other with no type of ego and be like, hey ‘maybe do this,’ or ‘I like the way you did that keep doing that,’ so it’s been open dialogue. It’s been a lot of fun.”

Because some of Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka’s terminology is similar to what he had with the Las Vegas Raiders, Waller has been able to pick up the Giants’ offensive system quickly.

“I’d like to say, since Daboll has similar terminology to where I came from, from Josh McDaniels, there are a lot of similar terms, a lot of similar concepts. So it gives me a little bit more comfort,” Waller said.

“There are certainly new things here, and you have to learn the new ways of how they do things and not just keep your old terminology or things you’ve learned before, so that helps a little bit, but it is challenging as well. Especially if you want to line up in a lot of different spots and you’re somebody that, you know, wants to run a bunch of different routes so a defense can’t gameplan for you per se, you’ve got to learn everything. . . And it’s a challenge, but I love a challenge.”

So long as Waller is able to stay healthy, expectations are that he’ll help Jones and the Giants’ offense reach the next level in 2023.

‘He’s a leader you want to play for’

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has often been the subject of criticism. He comes from the same school of thought as Eli Manning, even coming through Manning’s own camp. He’s not flashy, he’s not a diva and he doesn’t demand attention from the media. Jones shows up, does his job and goes home without causing waves.

The mark of a good leader is someone other people WANT to follow. Anyone can throw the football, but not everyone can lead a team. According to Giants tight end Daniel Bellinger, Jones is a guy you want to follow.

In part, Bellinger talks about how Jones gets to know his teammates as people, building personal relationships first. Whether it be trips, dinners or another way to connect, Jones makes it a point to get to know his teammates. Starting a new relationship off the field first helps to bolster the on-field connection.

Bellinger also notes how Jones is the first one to the practice facility every day. Even when the TE was injured and receiving treatment, he would be at the facility as early as 4:15 a.m., and Jones would always be there first. “This guy’s work ethic is unreal. He’s just a leader that you want to play for.”

Jones is similar to Manning in a number of ways, including his personality and how he handles life in New York. He’s a solid quarterback who got a rough start, but look for him to shine a little brighter this season, his second under the new regime.

Giants offense in Year 2 will be ‘extremely dynamic’

Many experts and talking heads believe the New York Giants will be much better this season, their second under head coach Brian Daboll.

Last year, Daboll took a team that had lost 10 or more games five straight seasons and led them to the postseason with a 9-7-1 record.

Daboll, who was named NFL Coach of the Year for his efforts, simply came in and cleaned up the mistakes that had been dogging the team for years – turnovers, penalties, injuries, etc. – and voila! The team became a contender overnight.

ESPN’s Sam Acho, a former NFL linebacker who crossed paths with Daboll in Buffalo in 2018, believes the Giants will improve even more in 2023, calling it ‘dynamic’.

The Giants are much better on paper heading into 2023. They added a center in rookie John Michael Schmitz and numerous weapons in the passing game such as former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller and wide receivers Parris Campbell and rookie Jalin Hyatt.

Let’s not forget that quarterback Daniel Jones is now fully comfortable in Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka’s scheme and should be more productive going forward.

CBS Sports puts Daniel Jones in Tier 3 among QBs

In 2021 and 2022, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports put all 32 NFL quarterbacks into tiers. This year, Will Brinson took a stab at it. He kept the tiers mostly the same, but did make some changes.

The tiers are as follows:

  • Tier 1 – The Big Three
  • Tier 2 – Could Join Them Next Year
  • Tier 3 – Intrigue With Question Marks
  • Tier 4 – You Can Win With Them
  • Tier 5 – Future Potential ‘Can Win With Them’ Guys
  • Tier 6 – No Clue Man
  • Tier 7 – The Rookies
  • Tier X – Just In Freaking Case

Looking at the tiers and which players he put there, Tier 3 isn’t a bad place to be. He’s sitting below players who have had more success than he has, and sharing space with Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Fields, Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson. That’s not bad company to be in.

Jones took a massive leap forward last season with good coaching — I don’t understand the idea he’s going to be worse in a second year with Brian Daboll coaching him up after the poo-poo platter New York gave him before.

There is no reason to think that Jones is going to perform worse than he did last season. It will be his second year under Daboll, and this isn’t his first time learning a new coach’s scheme. He may be a Tier 3 quarterback right now, but a solid Giants season will elevate him further.

New York Giants’ Daniel Jones sought top-5 QB money

The New York Giants inked quarterback Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million extension this offseason, a contract many ‘experts’ have panned as an egregious giveaway by the Giants.

Jones was actually asking for “Top 5” money this offseason, as per reports, but ended up settling for a deal that landed him just outside the Top 10. His new deal ranks him No. 11 when it comes to NFL quarterback salaries for 2023.

From Dan Duggan of The Athletic:

I figured the Giants would want to stay under the $40 million per year mark and proposed a five-year, $185 million contract ($37 million per year). But Jones’ camp drove a harder bargain than anticipated.

I expected Jones’ asking price to be sky high, using the $46 million per year deal signed by Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray last year as a comp. But Jones went higher, seeking $47 million per year.

If the Giants had acquiesced to Jones’ ask of $47 million per annum, he would have been the No. 5 paid quarterback heading into this season behind Lamar Jackson ($52 million), Jalen Hurts ($51 million), Aaron Rodgers ($50.3 million) and Russell Wilson ($49 million).

Instead, Jones comes in at No. 11 behind Murray, Deshaun Watson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Matt Stafford and tied with Dak Prescott.

New York Giants among the NFL’s best in quarterback stability rankings

The New York Giants have been the NFL’s fourth-best team in quarterback turnover rankings since 2013, notes Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports.

At the very bottom, most of the teams have been buoyed by longtime franchise QBs, like Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Matthew Stafford (Lions), Eli Manning (Giants), Derek Carr (Raiders) and Philip Rivers (Chargers).

The Giants have had only three starting quarterbacks since the start of the 2013 season which was tied for fourth lowest. To qualify for this list a quarterback had to start at least four games in a season for a team.

For the majority of this time, Big Blue had two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning calling the shots under center.

Manning is known for being an iron man, having only missed one start (since assuming the starting role) due to a surprise move to start Geno Smith for a game. While the post-2012 era was not the most prominent years of Manning’s career he did have one playoff trip and paved the way for the new era with Daniel Jones.

Jones is coming back to East Rutherford after signing a massive four-year extension with New York, so it looks like these two will be the faces of the franchise for at least a decade-long period.

The only other quarterback that appeared in at least four games during a season in this span was Mike Glennon, who started exactly four games in 2021 due to an injury to Jones.

Nevertheless, New York will be hoping that Jones can turn out similar to Manning in the sense of being a healthy, reliable quarterback that can bring some winning football back to MetLife Stadium.
