Amazon Web Services Plans to Invest $35 Billion by 2040 to Expand Data Centres in Virginia

Amazon’s cloud services division said Friday it plans to invest another $35 billion (roughly Rs. 2,83,400 crore) by 2040 to expand data centres in Virginia.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) said the new investment will create 1,000 jobs. Virginia Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin said AWS will establish multiple data centre campuses across Virginia.

In 2021, AWS said from 2011 to 2020 it had invested $35 billion (roughly Rs. 2,83,400 crore) in data centres located in northern Virginia and had 3,500 full time employees at its data centres in the state.

Pending approval by state lawmakers, Virginia is developing a new “Mega Data Center Incentive Program,” which would allow the company to receive up to a 15-year extension of Data Center Sales and Use tax exemptions on equipment and software.

AWS also will be eligible to receive a state grant of up to $140 million (roughly Rs. 1133 crore) “for site and infrastructure improvements, workforce development, and other project-related costs.”

Amazon shares closed up 3.8 percent Friday.

Amazon in 2018 after a long contest announced northern Virginia would be home to its second headquarters known as “HQ2” and eventually employ more than 25,000 employees. As of April, Amazon said its headcount assigned to the site was around 5,000.

Youngkin has faced some criticism for withdrawing from a competition to attract a new Ford Motor battery plant expected to be built with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), the world’s largest battery producer.

Youngkin defended his decision Friday, telling Bloomberg News that he looks “forward to bringing a great company there. It won’t be one that uses kind of a Trojan-horse relationship with the Chinese Communist Party in order to gain.”

A spokesperson for Youngkin has said that “while Ford is an iconic American company, it became clear that this proposal would serve as a front for the Chinese Communist party.”

Ford declined to comment on Youngkin’s decision to withdraw.

In July, Ford said it plans to localize 40 GWh of battery capacity in North America starting in 2026. It also announced CATL would provide battery packs for Mustang Mach-E models for North America starting in 2023 and would discuss cooperation for batteries in Ford vehicles around the world.

“Our talks with CATL continue – and we have nothing new to announce on either front,” Ford said.

Michigan is also a candidate for the Ford battery plant, sources said, and a decision could be made in the coming weeks.

Amazon Tests Prime Lite Membership in India, Available to Select Prime Members

Amazon is testing a new subscription service for users in India. Dubbed as Prime Lite, the new subscription is currently available as Beta version to limited Prime members in the country. In December 2021, Amazon Prime increased the yearly subscription price, raising it from Rs. 999 per year to Rs. 1,499 yearly. Now, the new subscription offer, Prime Lite, comes at Rs. 999. Prime Lite will be slightly different from Amazon Prime in terms of benefits and services offered.

According to a report by OnlyTech.com, Amazon is rolling out a new subscription service dubbed as Prime Lite. The news has also been confirmed by Gadgets 360, with the Prime Lite coming at an introductory price of Rs. 999 per year. The subscription is currently only available as Beta version to limited users across India.

Unlike Amazon Prime‘s Same-Day or One-Day delivery, Prime Lite offers Two-Day delivery on the products. For Prime Video, Prime Lite users can access unlimited content, similar to Amazon Prime. However, the content will not be available in HD format and will come with ads. It can be streamed on two devices at a time, one of which should be a mobile phone.

While the Prime Lite offers almost similar benefits and services like Amazon Prime, there is one major difference. Users cannot access Amazon Prime Music on the new Prime Lite membership. The other differences include no access to no-cost EMI, free ebooks or Prime Gaming.

To recall, Amazon revised the Prime Membership cost in India in December 2021, making it 50 percent costlier. The annual Prime membership was increased to Rs. 1,499 after a hike of Rs. 500 or over 50 percent from the previous price of Rs. 999. Meanwhile, the monthly pricing was increased by nearly 39 percent to Rs. 179 from Rs. 129, whereas the quarterly plan for Amazon Prime went up by over 39 percent to Rs. 459 from Rs. 329.

Amazon, Flipkart Served Notice by DCW for Selling Dangerous Acids Online

Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart have been issued with notices by an Indian government body asking why dangerous acids are available on their sites after a schoolgirl became the victim of an acid attack.

The Delhi Commission for Women, a local body that looks after women’s issues, said in the notice that it had learned the accused in the acid attack had bought the material from Walmart‘s Flipkart.

In a similarly worded notice issued to both Amazon and Flipkart, the commission asked both companies to explain the reasons for the availability of acid and name the sellers who sold such products on their e-commerce website.

“The easy availability of acid on online platforms is a matter of grave concern and needs to be checked urgently,” the commission said in the notice.

Reuters could not immediately corroborate if the acid was available on the two e-commerce websites. Spokespersons for Flipkart and Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.

Local media reported on Thursday that a seventeen-year old schoolgirl was in hospital with serious burn injuries after three men attacked her with acid. The three men have been arrested by police in the Indian capital. The Delhi Police had also issued a notice to Flipkart after it found that the acid was procured from the e-commerce firm.

Meanwhile, Flipkart said in its statement, “We strongly condemn this unfortunate incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family. The Flipkart marketplace platform closely monitors and delists products that violate expected standards.”

“Strict action is taken against sellers who are found to be engaged in selling products that are illegal, unsafe, and prohibited. The concerned seller has been blacklisted, and we are extending all support to the concerned authorities in their investigation.”

DCW also asked the portals details of steps taken for removing restricted items, including acid from the online portal. The portals have been asked to furnish the information by December 20.

Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez reveal space travel plans as they praise each other in first joint interview

Teamwork makes the romance work, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and longtime girlfriend Lauren Sánchez gush in their first interview as a couple.

Bezos, the fourth wealthiest person in the world, and journalist Sanchez shared their mutual adoration during a sit-down interview with CNN.

“We’re really great teammates, and we also have a lot of fun together,” Sánchez said. “And we love each other … We always look at each other and we’re the team.”

Bezos added that “it’s easy.”

“We bring each other energy, we respect each other. So, it’s fun to work together,” the online retail titan said.

Bezos, 58, who also is founder of the spaceflight company Blue Origin, said he hopes to make space travel accessible for everyone — and believes in his lifetime everyone who wants to should be able to travel to space.

“Let me give you an example. The Wright brothers flew this tiny little plane, just a couple hundred feet. And if you told the Wright brothers a hundred years from now, there’s going be a 787 that carries 400 people, they’d laugh,” Bezos said.

“We bring each other energy, we respect each other. So, it’s fun to work together.” Jeff Bezos said.
CNN

Sánchez, 52, an Emmy-award-winning journalist, asserted she plans on flying to space in 2023 on a flight accompanied by a “great group of females.” Sánchez is also a licensed pilot and founder of Black Ops Aviation, the first female-owned and operated aerial film and production company.

“I’ve also learned how to fly the helicopter,” Bezos said, prompting a laugh from Sanchez. “And she’s a horrible backseat pilot. She’s terrible!”

Sánchez countered she “realized that when I’m in the back of the helicopter when he’s flying, I just kind of have to look out the window, just kind of enjoy the scenery.

During the interview Jeff Bezos revealed he plans to give away most of his wealth during his lifetime.
CNN

“I’m like, ‘No, no. Pull up. Okay. Okay, Slow down.’ But he’s very good.,” she said.

The normally-private pair also spoke about their typical weekends, admitting Saturday nights consist of watching movies and spending time with their families.

“We can be kind of boring,” Sánchez said. “I would say normal. We have dinner with the kids. That’s always fun and a great conversation. There’s seven between us, so there’s a lot of discussion. And then we watch a movie … by committee. It takes a long time to find that movie.”

“We probably spend more time picking the movie than we need to,” Bezos added.

During the interview Bezos also revealed he plans to give away most of his wealth during his lifetime, admitting he doesn’t yet have a plan on how to unload his billions on issues like climate change.

Lauren Sánchez is an Emmy-award winning journalist and licensed pilot.

He said he plans on taking his time doing so.

“It’s not easy,” Bezos said. “Building Amazon was not easy. It took a lot of hard work, a bunch of very smart teammates, hard-working teammates, and I’m finding — and I think Lauren is finding the same thing — that charity, philanthropy, is very similar.”

“There are a bunch of ways that I think you could do ineffective things, too,” he added. “So you have to think about it carefully and you have to have brilliant people on the team.”

Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, has given away nearly $4 billion to 465 organizations in less than a year and twice that amount over the past two years.

CEO Andrew Jassy tells Amazon workers that layoffs will continue into 2023

Amazon employees can expect the current round of layoffs to continue into 2023, CEO Andrew Jassy said in a memo to workers.

The elimination of some 10,000 positions, or 3% of Amazon’s workforce, began this week, but the culling will extend into early next year, Jassy said. He describing the cuts as “the most difficult decision” he’s made in his 18 months as Amazon’s new chief executive.

“It’s not lost on me or any of the leaders who make these decisions that these aren’t just roles we’re eliminating, but rather, people with emotions, ambitions, and responsibilities whose lives will be impacted,” he said in Thursday’s memo.

After a hiring spree during the pandemic when Amazon was dangling generous bonuses, raising pay for hourly and corporate staff alike, it suddenly finds itself bloated with more than 1.3 million employees worldwide.

“The economy remains in a challenging spot and we’ve hired rapidly the last several years,” Jassy said.

Amazon is trimming some 10,000 employees or 3% of its workforce.

Amazon has initially targeted the cuts in the company’s Luna cloud-gaming service, Alexa divisions, which include devices, and it’s Lab126 arm, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Employees in Amazon’s device and books units started to get pink slips on Tuesday, according to the group’s head, Dave Limp, who sent a message to employees on Wednesday.

Jassy said Amazon also offered voluntary severance packages to employees in its People, Experience and Technology (PXT) organization.

“We haven’t concluded yet exactly how many other roles will be impacted,” going forward, he said.

The initial layoffs have focused on Amazon’s books and devices divisions.

The mass layoffs come on the heels of poor financial results by Amazon and other Big Tech giants, which were described as a “horror show” by Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

Amazon’s net income fell to $2.9 billion from $3.2 billion a year earlier. and its sales came in lower at $1.27.1 billion than Wall Street’s $127.46 billion forecast.

The company has also warned that it expects a weaker holiday season as inflation and a looming recession weigh on shoppers. Amazon’s founder and former CEO Jeff Bezos told CNN this week that consumers should put off big-ticket purchases like new cars, televisions and appliances to keep some “dry powder.”

Last month, Bezos advised companies to “batten down the hatches.”

US companies dictate minimum prices on goods to retailers, shoppers left with fewer discounts

Shoppers will find fewer discounts on everything from toys to tortillas as companies increasingly set minimum prices on their goods to maintain profits and limit price cutting by retailers like Walmart and Amazon.

For many years, manufacturers set the lowest price at which retailers could advertise certain big-ticket items like TVs. They wanted to stop shoppers who scoped out an item on the showroom floor from going online to find it at a lower price.

But with inflation hovering at 8%, shoppers who have gotten into the habit of buying smaller-ticket items online during the pandemic will have a hard time finding bargains.

“We’re seeing categories adopt (these floors) that never had, like food and beverage,” said Jack Gale, an account executive at PriceSpider, a platform which gives control of the customer journey back to brands.

While legal in most of the United States, these policies are illegal in many countries, including across Europe in most cases.

Companies such as Colgate-Palmolive have in recent months used minimum advertised price policies on products like its Optic White Pro Series toothpaste on Amazon, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Many consumer product categories, including Beauty and Personal Care, have seen a significant decline in discounts in 2022.
REUTERS

Other companies like Hasbro and Mr. Tortilla have managed to set a range for retailers to sell their products.

Hasbro requires retailers to keep prices for Monopoly, Twister, Chutes & Ladders and 21 other games and toys above its range of $6.99 to $33.99, unless it’s the holiday shopping season, according to a company memo seen by Reuters. The diet-friendly tortilla maker Mr. Tortilla also decided to set a minimum price level for Walmart and Amazon as it expanded sales.

In its efforts to offer competitive prices as compared to rivals like Walmart, Amazon uses its position to compel sellers to sell at prices locked by the e-commerce giant.

In a lawsuit filed by California against Amazon, suppliers argue that they have to agree to the rules set by the company which leads to brands implementing minimum advertised price policies.

Agreements dictating the for-sale price between retailer and manufacturer are not legal in some states including California and Maryland.

“Amazon routinely abuses its monopoly power to coerce sellers and suppliers, preventing them from offering cheaper prices elsewhere,” said U.S. Representative David Cicilline, who is working on proposed antitrust legislation aimed at bringing down prices.

Amazon does not restrict sellers from offering lower prices elsewhere, the company said.

Amazon Seller Cloudtail India Fined Rs. 1 Lakh by CCPA for Selling Cookers in Violation of BIS Standards

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on Cloudtail India for selling pressure cookers on Amazon in violation of mandatory BIS standards. The authority has asked Cloudtail to recall 1,033 pressure cookers and also reimburse the money to customers.

According to an official statement, CCPA — headed by Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare — has passed an order against Cloudtail India for “violation of consumer rights and unfair trade practice” by selling domestic pressure cookers in violation of mandatory standards.

The standards are prescribed as per the Domestic Pressure Cooker (Quality Control) Order, 2020.

“The company was also directed to pay a penalty of Rs 1,00,000 for selling domestic pressure cookers to consumers in violation of mandatory standards prescribed under the QCO and violating the rights of consumers,” the statement said.

The CCPA initiated suo-moto action against e-commerce platforms for the sale of domestic pressure cookers in violation of the compulsory standard.

The CCPA had issued notice to major e-commerce platforms including Amazon, Flipkart, Paytm Mall, Shopclues, and Snapdeal as well as to the sellers registered on these platforms.

“Cloudtail India Pvt Ltd is the seller of pressure cooker namely ‘Amazon Basics Stainless Steel Outer Lid Pressure Cooker, 4 L (does not give pressure alert by whistle)’,” the statement said.

The pressure cooker was being offered for sale to consumers on the Amazon e-commerce platform.

Cloudtail submitted in its reply to CCPA that after the QCO (Quality Control Order) came into force, it suspended the import of the pressure cooker.

CCPA observed that though import was suspended, the company had not stopped the sale of such pressure cookers to consumers.

“In fact, this submission evidently indicated that despite being aware of the QCO, the company was still selling such pressure cookers to consumers at large,” the statement said.

A total of 1,033 units of pressure cookers not conforming to mandatory standards were sold by Cloudtail through the Amazon e-commerce platform after notification of the QCO.

In the order, CCPA has directed Cloudtail to recall the 1,033 units of pressure cookers sold by it and reimburse the prices of the recalled pressure cookers to the consumers.

Cloudtail has been told to submit a compliance report within 45 days.

CCPA noted that the violation of standards mandated by the QCOs not only endangers public safety, but can make consumers vulnerable to severe injuries including loss of life.

“This is a critical cause for concern, especially in case of domestic pressure cooker, which is a household good, present in most homes…,” the statement said.

CCPA has also issued safety notices to alert and caution consumers against buying goods which do not hold a valid ISI mark and violate compulsory BIS standards.

While the first safety notice was issued with regard to helmets, pressure cookers and cooking gas cylinders, the second safety notice was issued with regard to household goods including electric immersion water heaters, sewing machines, microwave ovens, domestic gas stoves with LPG etc.

Google, Facebook, Big Tech Should Pay for Network Costs, Suggest EU Telcos

Telecom operators are pushing the European Union to implement new laws that would make Big Tech pay for network costs, following Australia’s example, according to four sources close to the matter.

Europe’s telecoms operators have lobbied for a financial contribution from US tech firms such as Alphabet‘s Google, Meta‘s Facebook and Netflix, saying that they use a huge part of the region’s internet traffic.

The latest proposal, which hasn’t been reported, is being discussed within the telecoms lobby group GSMA, an association that represents more than 750 mobile operators.

“GSMA is coordinating a proposal that speaks to Big Tech contribution to European infrastructure investment,” said John Giusti, GSMA’s chief regulatory officer, without elaborating on the content of the proposal.

A letter will be sent to EU industry chief Thierry Breton in the next five to six weeks, Giusti said.

Google, Facebook, Netflix, Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The proposal comes ahead of the 27-country bloc’s consultation on a so-called “fair share” contribution from the likes of Google, Netflix, Meta and Amazon, which account for more than half of the internet traffic.

These platforms dismiss the idea and consider it an internet traffic tax.

Australia’s recently-adopted laws in its own spat with Google and Facebook have emerged as the most-favoured weapon for telecoms operators in their dispute with Big Tech companies, the sources said.

The rules, first aimed at compelling tech giants to pay for news content online, allow an Australian government-appointed arbitrator to set fees if Big Tech companies and news publishers fail to find a common ground over copyright.

Rupert Murdoch’s News reached last year a content-supply deal with Meta’s Facebook in Australia under the rules, helping to put an end to a dispute that saw the social media giant briefly shut down thousands of pages in the country.

Under Australia’s binding so-called “final-offer arbitration”, the parties have to negotiate in good faith. But if a deal can’t be struck between them, they have to present their offers and defer to an arbitrator to choose one.

The goal is to encourage tech giants and news publishers to reach an agreement before being compelled to go for this last resort procedure.

The telecoms operators that are part of GSMA, including some of Europe’s largest such as Orange, Deutsche Telekom and Telefonica agree that the Australian way is the best approach, the sources said.

No formal document has yet been sent to Breton, the sources said. Officials are discussing whether the proposal will be made directly by the GSMA or from a group of chief executives, one of the sources said.

Breton has said he will seek feedback from both sides before drafting legislation.
