JioCinema Likely to Focus on Pricing, Local Content as It Challenges Disney, Netflix in India

The video streaming business of Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest person, is likely to focus on pricing and local content following a deal with Warner Bros as it seeks to challenge the likes of Disney and Netflix, industry sources said. Under the content deal announced on Thursday, popular series from HBO and Warner Bros, such as Harry Potter and Succession, will be available from next month on the JioCinema platform, which Ambani’s Viacom18 has promoted for weeks by offering popular IPL cricket matches for free.

A pricing strategy for JioCinema is still under discussion internally, an industry source said, but Ambani has a reputation of disrupting rivals in the price-sensitive Indian market with cheap offers. In 2016, he offered mobile data for free, making his Jio telecom service India’s top player. He is adopting a similar strategy to promote his consumer goods to rival Coca-Cola and Nestle.

Viacom18, the broadcast division of Ambani’s Reliance Industries, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Its shareholders also include Paramount Global as well as Bodhi Tree, a joint venture between James Murdoch and former top Disney executive, Uday Shankar. The Warner deal, industry executives and media analysts said, will boost Viacom18’s already announced plans to ‘innovate and disrupt’ the sector, and help to attract the premium English speaking audience in India.

At stake is a slice of a video streaming market that is expected to grow annually by 22-25 percent to reach $13-$15 billion (in the vicinity of Rs. 1,20,000 crore) by 2030, according to a 2021 report by Indian lobby group CII and the Boston Consulting Group. That compares with projected annual growth of 8.63 percent in the US market, which is expected to hit $54.66 billion (around Rs. 4,50,000 crore) by 2027, according to Statista.

While Netflix and other rivals boast of content specially created for the India audience, JioCinema’s current free offerings largely include old Hindi and local language movies. In sports, it has IPL cricket streaming rights until 2027 and in March bagged exclusive rights for MotoGP in India. The big challenge is the lack of fresh local and global content on JioCinema, something that will be become even more critical as the IPL season ends next month.

JioCinema is in talks with various production studios and has plans to introduce dozens of TV shows and movies on the platform in the coming months, in Hindi and other languages, a second industry source told Reuters on Friday. “There are many Indias within India. While IPL is for the masses, partnership with Warner is a precursor to JioCinema’s entry into the premium subscription segment,” said Mihir Shah, vice president at Media Partners Asia.

Nitesh Kripalani, former country head of Amazon’s Prime Video in India, said he expects Reliance’s venture to do more such deals, but pricing remains key. “India is a value conscious market. For any media business, anywhere in the world – you need to get consumers to pay. Advertising can only pay so much,” he said. Netflix, Amazon and Disney Hotstar have become popular in India by launching exclusive movies and web series starring Bollywood actors. They have also diversified into regional local language content.

At present Netflix — which has most the expensive subscription plans — has just 8 million subscribers, Amazon has 17 million, while Disney+ Hotstar, which earlier had the digital rights for IPL, leads with 49 million, according to Media Partners, which doesn’t have data for JioCinema’s free service. Karan Taurani, vice president of India’s Elara Capital, sad JioCinema’s success will hinge on quality of its content. “They may make so many films and series but (what if) more than 70-80 percent of them bomb? The only way to scale up is to really differentiate your content and make sure execution is right,” he said.

Jubilee Trailer: Vikramaditya Motwane’s New Prime Video Series Depicts Glamour and Scandals in Golden Age Bollywood

Vikramaditya Motwane’s upcoming Web series Jubilee just got a trailer. Ahead of its debut on April 7, Amazon Prime Video has dropped a trailer for the show, a love letter to the Golden Age of Bollywood, chronicling the lives of a rising star, studio heads, a nautch girl, and more, as they chase dreams and struggle to make it in the film business. Although the premise sounds a bit like Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, the tone of the Jubilee trailer is nowhere as boisterous or loud — or drug-fuelled, for that matter. Motwane — best known for Netflix’s Sacred Games — directs the 10-episode series, from a script written by Atul Sabharwal (Aurangzeb). Jubilee’s episodes 1–5 will be out on April 7, while the remaining 6–10 release the following week on April 14.

Set in a newly independent India, the Jubilee trailer opens with a voiceover from an unseen woman: “What’s great about some people? When they are not given their piece of land, they conquer it.” Cut to Bombay in 1947, we’re introduced to an up-and-coming actor named Madan Kumar, who is desperately demanded by production house Roy Talkies’ head Srikant Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee), for a role in one of his films. Enter Binod Das (Aparshakti Khurana), who is depicted as Roy’s “loyal soldier,” who is sent on a mission to escort Madan Kumar from Lucknow to Bombay. However, things go awry on the journey back, when their car ends up crashing and catches fire, leaving Kumar stuck inside the car. Binod, who has always wanted to be a star decides to grab that opportunity, leaving Kumar for dead and returning empty-handed.

While not explicitly mentioned in the Jubilee trailer, it is implied that the incident was covered up and Binod took on the identity of Madan Kumar. (Not sure what they did about his facial appearance?) He is seen gradually rising the ranks — attending lavish parties, signing autographs, and enjoying the sights of the audience repeating his dialogues. Of course, whenever things get out of line, the studio executives are present to remind the star of his true self. “I’ve mortgaged the studio to finance this film, and to make you ‘Madan Kumar,’ Binod,” Roy says, as we’re shown visuals of our fake star meeting up with two other key characters of Jubilee.

Up first is Jay Khanna (Sidhant Gupta), an aspiring newbie director who intends to make a film with Madan Kumar. “If you’re this fond of wasting money, go gamble at a casino,” a stone-faced Madan/ Binod warns him, though it doesn’t even faze the ambitious filmmaker. Then there’s Nilofer (Wamiqa Gabbi), a singer-dancer, who makes her living by performing before live audiences, holding onto the belief that one must surrender their body or their soul to make it in the industry. We also meet another star Sumitra Kumari (Aditi Rao Hydari), who is on a mission to expose the fake Madan Kumar and her husband Roy’s involvement in the cover-up — she was romantically involved with the real one and seeks justice.

“Jubilee for me as an actor was a complete no-brainer. When I heard the story, and especially Binod’s journey, I knew I had to do this. It is one of the most challenging characters I have played to date, but also the most rewarding,” lead Khurana said in a prepared statement. “Vikramaditya Motwane is a maverick, he has been able to bring out the best in not just me, but the entire cast and crew.” Jubilee also stars Nandish Sandhu (Super 30) and Ram Kapoor (Thappad), and features a vintage soundtrack composed by Amit Trivedi.

The first five episodes of Jubilee stream April 7 on Amazon Prime Video.

Takeshi’s Castle Reboot Cast Lineup Revealed, Releasing Late April on Amazon Prime Video

Takeshi’s Castle is returning this April, and ahead of that, Amazon Prime Video has unveiled its cast lineup. Serving as a reboot of the original 1980s Japanese game show, Takeshi Kitano returns as a resurrected Castle Lord, setting up challenging obstacles for its participants. Other additions include Osamu Shitara (Star Wars Rebels) and Yuki Himura as the chief retainer and vassal of Takeshi’s Castle, respectively. Comedians Shinya Ueda, Naomi Watanabe, and Ennosuke Ichikawa IV will appear as governors of three castles guarding the centre of Takeshi’s Castle. TV presenter Hayato Tani and Subaru Kimura — best known for voicing Takeshi Goda/ Gian in the Doraemon anime — serve as the attack captains.

Takeshi’s Castle is filled with fundamentals of variety shows,” castle lord Kitano said in a prepared statement. “The way people boldly try something nearly impossible and end up failing is one of the most fun things to watch. I hope you enjoy the show without thinking too much.” For the uninitiated, Takeshi’s Castle was a Japanese game show, where over 100 determined volunteer contestants would participate in an array of well-designed physical challenges, such as balancing on a surfboard, swinging across a muddy pit, navigating across giant trolling pins, a claustrophobic maze game, and a whole lot more. While most challenges are based on skill and brains, some lean heavily towards luck, instantly disqualifying unlucky participants. By eliminating Takeshi in a laser-gun-based cart battle, the player would win ¥1 million (about Rs. 6,14,000), at the time.

The series spawned several other international versions of Takeshi’s Castle and even inspired physical game shows such as Wipeout in the US and Total Wipeout in the UK. In India, a shortened version of the original Japanese Takeshi’s Castle was aired on the Pogo TV channel, featuring comedic Hindi dubbing/ commentary by Jaaved Jaffrey (Jaadugar), which was perhaps the biggest draw of the show and made it quite popular for Indian audiences when it aired in the 2000s. When news about the aforementioned reboot broke last year, the actor expressed his interest in lending hilarious commentary for Hindi-speaking audiences. Currently, there is no word on whether dubs will be included in the Amazon Prime Video version.

While Takeshi’s Castle’s commentary style might sound aged to a modern audience — if they follow the same format — it will be interesting to see what tech they use to make challenges more daunting. Proximity sensors could be a good way to modernise the show, while another cool idea would be to have the contestants wear GoPro or other action cameras, so we get to experience the impact first-hand when some giant rubber beam slaps against their faces or they fall head-first into mud.

Takeshi’s Castle reboot will be available for streaming in late April on Amazon Prime Video.

The Peripheral Renewed for Second Season at Amazon Prime Video

The Peripheral has been renewed for a second season. In a tweet, Amazon Prime Video confirmed that a new chapter of the Chloë Grace Moretz-led mind-bending sci-fi drama is currently in the works. Based on the eponymous best-selling book by William Gibson, the TV series adaptation was helmed by Scott B. Smith, best known for the Keanu Reeves-led Siberia. Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who executive-produced The Peripheral, return in similar roles for the new season. Currently, there is no release window for The Peripheral season 2.

“We are thrilled to continue the journey into Season Two and delve deeper into the incredible world that Gibson created,” Nolan and Joy said in a prepared statement. “On behalf of Scott Smith, Vincenzo Natali, and the entire team, we’re grateful to our partners at Amazon and, most of all, to the fans.” Spoilers ahead – The Peripheral season 1 ended on a dramatic note, with protagonist Flynne Fisher (Moretz) getting herself killed by Conner (Eli Goree) in her own timeline, so it would appear as if it was Inspector Ainsley Lowbeer’s (Alexandra Billings) doing. This action destroys the stolen data in Flynne’s brain, after which she wakes up in her Peripheral in the futuristic deserted London.

News about internal discussions for The Peripheral season 2 broke in December, with Collider reporting that Amazon Prime Video was working on scripts for new time-travel exploits. “We’re already hard at work on scripts for Season 2 and a plan for Season 2, so nothing to say officially right now, but we’re deep into it,” Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ Head of Television, said in the interview. The Peripheral marks the first series developed by Nolan and Joy, after signing the $150 million (about Rs. 1,238 crore) deal with Amazon Studios. Following Westworld’s axing at HBO, the pair will also adapt the acclaimed Bethesda video game (franchise) Fallout for Amazon — starring Walter Goggins (The Hateful Eight) in the lead, against a post-nuclear wasteland.

Set in a 2032 dystopian US, The Peripheral follows Moretz’s Flynne Fisher, who is pulled deep into the realm of virtual and augmented reality, when she decides to beta-test a simulation. It transports her to a deserted London and tasks her with breaking into the Research Institute corporation and stealing some intel. But when things go awry she realises that the world she is in is actually real, but set in the distant future where a series of cataclysmic events killed most of the population. The series also starred Jack Reynor (Midsommar) as Flynne’s brother, who introduced her to the simulations.

All eight episodes of The Peripheral season 1 are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon Could Drop The Grand Tour’s Jeremy Clarkson After Controversial Comments on Meghan Markle: Report

Amazon Prime Video could part ways with The Grand Tour presenter Jeremy Clarkson following the completion of already-commissioned seasons in light of his controversial comments on British Royal Family member Meghan Markle. As per a new report, Clarkson’s comments in a column published in British tabloid The Sun have caused enough controversy to make the streaming giant reconsider any future plans with the television presenter. Clarkson is the co-presenter of popular automotive show The Grand Tour, along with Richard Hammond and James May, and is also a part of Clarkson’s Farm, both of which stream on Amazon Prime Video globally.

A report in Variety states that Amazon Prime Video won’t be working with Jeremy Clarkson beyond seasons and episodes of The Grand Tour and Clarkson’s Farm which have already been commissioned.

As of now, The Grand Tour is expected to run at least till the end of 2024 for specials already commissioned or in production, while Clarkson’s Farm has been commissioned for a third season that could also air in 2024. The second season of Clarkson’s Farm is expected to release on February 10, although the backlash against Clarkson’s comments could take some of the momentum out of any promotional activities Amazon Prime Video may have planned for the show.

The controversial comments were made in December 2022 against British Royal Family member Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, and have been criticised as being misogynistic and hateful. Clarkson has publicly apologised for the comments, as well as privately apologised earlier to both the Duchess and her husband Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, but it appears that the damage has already been done to his career.

Clarkson gained fame as the host of BBC’s Top Gear, a long-running show about cars and motoring, before being abruptly fired in 2015 for alleged racial abuse and assault on a producer of the show. Following this, he and his former Top Gear co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May signed a lucrative deal with Amazon Prime Video, which led to the production of The Grand Tour, said to be one of the platform’s most popular shows. With this latest controversy and the consequences that will follow, this long-running deal is expected to come to a similar end.

Amazon Working on Standalone App for Sports Content: Report

Amazon.com is working on a standalone app for watching sports content, the Information reported on Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.

Sports remains one of the biggest attractions for live viewing as US audiences increasingly switch from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps.

The move will likely complement Amazon‘s effort to double down on sports programming through its Prime Video service, a key channel to attract consumers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already owns the rights to stream games including National Football League’s Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK, setting it up to better compete with sports streaming leader Walt Disney Co.

Last week, Alphabet unit YouTube also signed a multi-year deal to exclusively stream NFL’s Sunday Ticket package of games in the United States.

It was not clear when Amazon would roll out the sports app and whether it would go through with the plan, according to the report.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The company has been reviewing unprofitable business units and has laid off some staff to cover rising costs and a demand downturn as inflation-wary consumers and businesses spend less.

In India, Amazon launched Prime Gaming for PC a few days back, giving users access to various free PC games every month. This is a subscription-based gaming service which can be availed along the Amazon Prime plan. In December 2022, Prime Gaming provides access to eight game titles.

To avail the Prime Gaming service in India, users can head to the Prime Gaming website by signing in with their credentials, and click on the Activate Prime Gaming button from the top right corner of the screen.

Henry Cavill to Star in Warhammer 40,000 Series at Amazon Prime Video: Report

Henry Cavill is reportedly attached to a Warhammer 40,000 series at Amazon Prime Video. As per Deadline, the actor is exploring multiple opportunities, with the aforementioned adaptation of the popular miniature wargame in the “more advanced stages” of development. Details are a little murky, but Cavill is attached to star in and executive produce it, in a way that caters to mainstream audiences. The 39-year-old star, who was brought back by Warner Bros. to play Superman once again, was let go earlier this week, as new DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran laid out their long-term plans for the future of the franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios is in the final stages of acquiring rights to Warhammer 40,000, whose board games are manufactured by Games Workshop. Akin to its video game series — which switches genre with each entry — the original board games are set in the distant future, where a stagnant human civilisation struggles to survive amongst hostile aliens and other supernatural creatures. It functions similarly to a Dungeons & Dragons game, in the sense that dice play a key role in the outcome, but adds miniature figures that players can move around in a model battlefield. The characters are usually equipped with armaments, ranging from firearms to primitive weapons imbued with magic powers. Diehard fans even prefer painting those models as a hobby, to give them a visual boost — something Cavill has flexed on social media in the past.

Shortly after accepting his return as Superman in the DC Universe for Warner Bros., Cavill exited Netflix’s mainline The Witcher series, in which he played the lead character, Geralt of Rivia. The role was passed on to Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games movies), who will portray the dark fantasy character, starting with The Witcher season 4.

As per Variety, that development hasn’t changed either, solidifying the end of Cavill’s run in the series. Meanwhile, Cavill’s return as the Kryptonian was shut down earlier this week, with Gunn planning a Superman film reboot based on the younger years of the hero.

It’s also worth noting that hours before reports about Cavill’s attachment to a Warhammer 40,000 series emerged, Rahul Kohli proposed a similar plan on his Twitter. “Hey Henry, f–k it, let’s make a Warhammer movie/limited series. Kind regards, Rahul,” the Midnight Mass actor said. Even Sex Education actor Asa Butterfield joined in on the fun, requesting to play a servitor — a wide class of mindless, cybernetic drones forged from a fusion of human flesh and robotic technology.

Amazon Studios has yet to make an official statement on the Warhammer 40,000 project. This wouldn’t be the only video game project at Prime Video though, with the platform officially ordering a God of War live-action adaptation whose existence had been first reported in March. The series will be set in the Norse mythology and will follow the same story as the critically-acclaimed 2018 video game, which follows a reserved Kratos journeying to the highest peak with his estranged son Atreus, forging a father-son bond that is tested at every hostile corner.

FTX: Avengers Endgame’s Russo Brothers to Direct, Produce Amazon Prime Video Series on Cryptocurrency Firm

Joe and Anthony Russo — the directors of Marvel’s biggest movie of all time, Avengers: Endgame — are reportedly involved in directing and producing a new Amazon Prime Video series that details the rise and fall of cryptocurrency platform FTX.

The Russo Brothers’ production banner AGBO will be behind the untitled Amazon FTX series. They are expected to direct the first episode.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Prime Video’s FTX show will be penned by David Weil, who earlier created Hunters for the streaming service.

Founded by Sam Bankman-Fried in 2019, FTX quickly became one of the biggest crypto exchanges on the market.

However, a series of revelations in the past month led to devastating losses at FTX, and its related trading firm Alameda Research.

FTX eventually filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US, and a group of investors sued the company and several celebrity endorsers for fraud.

Apart from Endgame, Joe and Anthon Russo are also behind Marvel blockbusters such as Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Infinity War.

Since the Endgame days, the Russo Brothers have gone on to direct the Tom Holland-led Cherry for Apple TV+, and the Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans-starrer The Gray Man at Netflix.

Both were among the most expensive movies for the respective platforms. A sequel for The Gray Man is in the works, with Joe and Anthony expected to return as directors.

The untitled FTX series is not the first partnership between Amazon and the Endgame directors.

The Russos are currently awaiting the release of the Prime Video spy series Citadel, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden.

In the feature film space, they have set up Millie Bobby Brown-led sci-fi film The Electric State at Netflix, which is also said to carry a huge budget
