Adobe Photoshop to Get New Generative AI Features Powered by Firefly Image 3 Model

Adobe unveiled a new version of its Photoshop app for desktop on Tuesday, which now comes with new artificial intelligence (AI) features. Powered by its Firefly Image 3 foundation model, the third iteration of the company’s in-house text-to-image generation model, the new Photoshop will be able to generate images from text prompts directly within the app for the first time. The app is currently in beta, but the company has said it will be launched to all users later this year.

Making the announcement via a post in its newsroom, Adobe unveiled the new Photoshop for desktop app. The app was officially showcased at its Creativity Conference event. The new beta app comes with multiple new AI features such as Reference Image, Generate Image, Generate Similar, Generate Background, and Enhance Detail. The existing features such as Generative Fill and Generative Expand have also been improved.

Adobe Photoshop new features

The company also released a short video showcasing the capabilities of the new photo-editing software. The biggest addition with the new Firefly Image 3 model is the Reference Image. This feature allows users to upload an image as a reference to generate images. Users can also use the reference image on top of a generated image to enhance it further. The next big addition is the debut of text-to-image generation capabilities within the Photoshop app. Earlier, users could only use Generative Fill and Generative Expand inside the app.

Further, the Generate Background feature replaces and creates backgrounds, whereas Generate Similar generates different variations of an already generated image for granular control over the outcome. Apart from the AI features, Adobe has also added other tools such as Adjustment Brush for non-destructive adjustments to specific portions of images, an improved font browsing experience, and adjustment presets.

The company claimed that the Firefly Image 3 foundation model was only trained on licensed content such as Adobe Stock. To ensure the AI-generated images can be identified from real images, Adobe follows the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) open standard which requires AI tool makers to add an AI label as well as to include details about its creation process within the metadata. In addition, it also follows the Adobe-led Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) standard.

Adobe Express Mobile App With Firefly AI Is Now Available Globally

Adobe Express mobile app with Firefly AI is now available for all users globally. The artificial intelligence (AI)-powered photo and video editing mobile platform was first unveiled by the company in March. At the time, the company released the app in beta, allowing users to test out the features. After more than a month of staying in beta, it is now available for all Android and iOS users for free. The app does come with a premium tier for those who want to use exclusive features.

The move was announced via a newsroom post by Adobe. Launching the mobile app, Govind Balakrishnan, senior vice president, Adobe Express and Digital Media Services, Adobe, said, “Adobe Express brings the magic of Firefly generative AI directly into web and mobile content creation experiences.” Adobe Express is geared towards businesses and digital content creators who post on TikTok, Instagram, X, Facebook and other social platforms.

Notably, Adobe Express is not a new initiative by the company. It has been experimenting with a cloud-based mobile content creation platform since 2015. The new app now brings the capabilities of Adobe’s in-house Firefly AI capabilities to Android and iOS platforms. Additionally, users will also get the option for co-editing, reviewing, and commenting on the app to create a collaborative environment. Users on mobile and desktop will also be able to collaborate on the same project, adding cross-platform collaboration as well.

Adobe Express features

With the AI-powered app, users will get multiple video-focused features. Users can combine video clips, images, and music to create a single video. There are options to add animations, generate real-time and customisable captions in over 100 languages, add video timeline, layer timing, and more. The app supports 4K videos as well.

On the image front, users can generate photos using the Firefly text-to-image generator as well as use Generative Fill to add, remove, or replace people, objects and more with simple text prompts. Further, the app allows users to generate editable templates with text prompts. To keep content created and edited through its AI tools safe for commercial use, Firefly AI follows the guidelines of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), an open-source technology to label AI-generated content.

There are some features which will not be available to the users accessing the free version of the app. Adobe has added a premium tier where a monthly membership is priced at Rs. 480. The membership will offer access to Firefly AI-specific features such as resize and erase, premium templates, licensed Adobe fonts, 100GB of cloud storage, and access to Adobe Photoshop Express. Currently, the company is also offering a two-week free trial on the membership.

Adobe Tests New Adobe Express App With Generative AI Capabilities for Android, iOS

Adobe has released a new Adobe Express app for Android and iOS in beta testing. The new app brings Adobe’s premium features and the generative artificial intelligence (AI) features of Firefly AI together on a mobile platform for the first time. The company has announced that while the app is in beta, it will be free for users to download and install. Some of the premium features will also be provided for free. However, as per a report, the generative AI features will require Adobe’s generative credits.

For the unversed, Adobe Express is a cloud-based mobile content creation platform that has gone through multiple name changes and iterations since 2015 and was finally relaunched with its current name in 2021. This new app for Android and iOS combines Firefly AI’s features and premium image editing features and offers it through a single interface. Additionally, the company has also added co-editing, review, and commenting capabilities to the app, which means users working on different smartphones can work on a project at the same time. Users on mobile and desktop will also be able to collaborate on the same project.

Coming to features, Adobe is offering premium photo and video editing features such as removing backgrounds and one-click resizing for free for as long as the app is in beta testing. However, the generative AI features will not be free, as per a report by The Verge. Using the Firefly-powered features such as generative fill and text-to-image will require Adobe’s generative credits. These generally require a paid subscription, but the beta users will be given 25 credits per month.

Other features include AI-powered text styling, video templates, real-time caption generation in more than 100 languages, support for 4K videos, access to Adobe fonts, stock videos, music tracks, a content scheduler, and more. To keep content created and edited through its AI tools safe for commercial use, Firefly AI follows the guidelines of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), an open-source technology to label AI-generated content.

The new Adobe Express mobile app in beta is available for free on Android and iOS devices. Android users can download the beta app from the Google Play store. Due to Apple’s restrictions on the number of beta users, iOS users can join the waitlist here and Adobe will guide selected participants through the process.

Adobe Adds Generative AI Features to Photoshop; Says Will Make Editing, Creating Images Faster

Adobe on Tuesday said it is adding artificial intelligence (AI) technology for generating imagery into Photoshop, its flagship software for editing images.

The San Jose, California-based company said it was the start of a major push to add such AI technologies to its suite of programs aimed at creative professionals.

While programs such as OpenAI’s Dall-E have captured the public imagination by transforming text prompts into images, they have not yet seen wide use by big corporations because of legal questions around the data used to develop the systems.

Adobe has sought to address those concerns with a core technology system it calls Firefly, which was specifically created with legal-to-use image data and that Adobe says can be used in commercial settings.

Adobe has been testing the system for about six weeks on a standalone website and on Tuesday said it will add features based on it to Photoshop, perhaps the company’s best-known product.

One new feature will be called “Generative Fill” and it will allow users to extend an original image that was cropped in too closely with computer-generated content, or add features based on a text description.

The feature can, for example, take a picture of a single flower and turn it into a field of flowers with a mountain range behind it.

Ely Greenfield, chief technology officer for digital media at Adobe, said that the intention of the tool is not to replace graphic artists but to make it faster for them to create new images out of multiple ideas. In the past, they would have had to spend valuable hours searching photo archives and stitching together pieces of existing images by hand.

“This just dramatically accelerates that production work,” Greenfield said.
