Elon Musk’s SpaceX Said to Become Most Valuable US Startup, Valuation Rises to $125 Billion

Billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX is poised to become the most valuable US startup as its valuation rose to over $125 billion (roughly Rs. 9,68,906 crore) in an ongoing share sale in the secondary market, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The shares, which are marketed at about $72 (roughly Rs. 5,580 crore), jumped in valuation from last October, when SpaceX’s shares were sold at $56 (roughly Rs. 4,340) apiece after a 10-1 split and valued the rocket company at $100 billion (roughly Rs. 7,75,125 crore).

No new shares have been issued in the secondary offering, but the company indicated to investors that they may do so later this year, said one of the sources, who asked not to be identified.

The share sale could value SpaceX at over $125 billion (roughly Rs. 9,68,906 crore), surpassing fintech giant Stripe, which was valued at $115 billion (roughly Rs. 8,91,439 crore) in a secondary sale. It could not be learned how many shares have been made available for sale by the company.

It is common for highly valued private companies to offer shares in the secondary market to introduce liquidity for early investors and employees.

Reuters could not determine if Chief Executive Elon Musk, who owns 44 percent of the SpaceX and signed a $44 billion (roughly Rs. 3,40,923 crore) deal to acquire Twitter, are among the sellers. Musk is also the chief executive of Tesla. SpaceX did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. The New York Post first reported on the private placement on Monday.

In the capital-intensive business, SpaceX has raised $337.4 million (roughly Rs. 2,615 crore) in December and $1.16 billion (roughly Rs. 8,990 crore) in equity financing last April, according to regulatory filings.

The company competes with former Amazon.com Chief Executive Jeff Bezos’s space venture Blue Origin and billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic in the burgeoning constellation of commercial rocket ventures. SpaceX has already launched numerous cargo payloads and astronauts to the International Space Station for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), including 19 rocket launches this year alone.

Prey Teaser Trailer Out: Predator Prequel Movie to Premiere August 5 on Hulu

Prey teaser and release date are out. Production house 20th Century Studios has released a 45-second-long teaser trailer for the sci-fi thriller — the fifth installment of the Predator franchise and a prequel to the previous entries, to confirm that the feature film will premiere in the US on the streaming service Hulu on August 5. Select regions outside the US are expected to be able to watch it on Disney+. In the Prey teaser, we see a woman running for her life. While the video doesn’t spell out what the danger is, those familiar with the franchise would know that she is being hunted by an alien species. As the video progresses, we are introduced to a fearless female hunter, who saves the first character and tries to eliminate the danger facing them. We also get a glimpse of the advanced weaponry that has over the years become synonymous with the Predator franchise.

The teaser does not reveal much about the Prey story. The official synopsis, however, states that the film is set three centuries ago in the Comanche Nation where Naru, a braveheart, protects her community from a blood-thirsty alien called Yautja.

Headlined by Amber Midthunder, who is part of the Fort Peck Sioux Tribe and is best known for her work on the FX series Legion and the science-fiction show Roswell, New Mexico, the Prey cast includes Dane DiLiegro, Dakota Beavers, and Michelle Thrush.

Dan Trachtenberg directs Prey, his second feature after the 2016 science fiction psychological thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane, off a script by Patrick Aison. The movie is produced by John Davis, who served as one of the three producers for the Arnold Schwarzenegger-led 1987 Predator film, and Jhane Myers.

In a statement, the filmmakers say they have tried to depict the Comanche community, a Native American tribe, as authentically as possible through Prey. The filmmaker’s team said in a statement: “The filmmakers were committed to creating a film that provides an accurate portrayal of the Comanche and brings a level of authenticity that rings true to its Indigenous peoples. Myers, an acclaimed filmmaker, Sundance Fellow and member of the Comanche nation herself, is known for her attention and dedication to films surrounding the Comanche and Blackfeet nations and her passion for honoring the legacies of the Native communities. As a result, the film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Amber Midthunder, newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope.”

Prey comes to Hulu in the US on August 5.

Apple Introduces New Accessibility Features Including Door Detection, Live Captions

Apple on Tuesday announced a list of accessibility features that are aimed to help users with disabilities. The new features, which are coming to the iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac later this year, are claimed to use hardware, software, and machine learning advancements to help people who have low vision or are visually impaired or the ones with physical or motor disabilities. The features include Door Detection for iPhone and iPad users, Apple Watch Mirroring, and live captions. Apple also announced updates to VoiceOver, with 20 additional locales and languages.

One of the most useful accessibility features that Apple introduced as a part of its latest updates is Door Detection that uses LiDAR sensor on the latest iPhone or iPad models to help navigate users to locate a door. The feature uses a combination of LiDAR, camera, and on-device machine learning to understand how far users are from the door and describe the door’s attributes, including whether it is open or closed, the company said.

If the door is closed, the Door Detection feature can help people open it by pushing, turning a knob, or pulling a handle. It is also claimed to read signs and symbols around the door, such as the room number, and even recognise the presence of an accessible entrance symbol.

The Door Detection feature, which will work with the iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPad Pro 11-inch (2020), iPad Pro 11-inch (2021), and the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2020) and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021), will be available through the pre-installed Magnifier app.

Apple’s Magnifier app will have a new Detection Mode to enable access to the Door Detection feature. It will also have People Detection and Image Descriptions as the two new features that can work alone or simultaneously along with Door Detection to help support people with visually impaired or low vision.

Alongside the updates within Magnifier, Apple Maps will also get sound and haptic feedback for users who have enabled VoiceOver to help them identify the starting point for walking direction, the company announced.

The Apple Watch will also get dedicated Apple Watch Mirroring support to let users control the smartwatch remotely using their paired iPhone. The new offering will help users control Apple Watch using iPhone’s assistive features, including Voice Control and Switch Control. Users can use inputs such as voice commands, sound actions, head tracking, and even external Made for iPhone switches as alternatives to tap the Apple Watch display.

All this will assist people with physical and motor disabilities.

Apple said that Apple Watch Mirroring uses hardware and software integration on the system, including AirPlay advancements, to allow users to use features including Blood Oxygen and Heart Rate tracking and Mindfulness app. The mirroring feature will work with the Apple Watch Series 6 and later models.

Apple Watch users will also get double-pinch gesture support. This will help users answer or end a phone call, dismiss a notification, take a photo, play or pause media in the Now Playing app, and start, pause, or resume a workout — all by using the double-pinch gesture. It will work with AssistiveTouch on Apple Watch.

For deaf users or those with hearing impairments, Apple announced Live Captions on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It will be available later this year in beta in English for users in the US and Canada on the iPhone 11 and later, iPad models with A12 Bionic and later, and Macs with Apple silicon.

Live Captions will work with any audio content, including phone and FaceTime calls, as well as video conferencing or social media app, streaming media content, and even in case users are having a conversation with someone next to them, the company said.

Users can adjust font size for ease of reading. The feature in FaceTime will also attribute auto-transcribed dialogue to call participants to make it more convenient for users with hearing disabilities to communicate with each other over video calls.

On Mac, Live Captions will come along with the option to type a response and have it spoken aloud in real time to others who are part of the conversation, Apple said. It also claimed that Live Captions will be generated on device — keeping privacy and user safety in mind.

Apple’s native screen reader — VoiceOver — is also getting 20 additional locales and languages, including Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. There will also be dozens of new voices that are touted to be optimised for assistive features across all supported languages.

The new languages, locales, and voices will also be available for Speak Selection and Speak Screen features. Further, VoiceOver on Mac will work along with the new Text Checker tool to fix formatting issues such as duplicated spaces or misplaced capital letters.

Apple also introduced some additional accessibility features to celebrate the Global Accessibility Awareness Day this week. These features include Siri Pause Time that will help users adjust how long the voice assistant waits before responding to a request, Buddy Control to ask care provider or friend to play a game, and a customisable Sound Recognition that is claimed to be customised to recognise sounds that are specific to a person’s environment, like their home’s unique alarm, doorbell, or appliances.

The preloaded Apple Books app will also include new themes and customisation options such as bolding text and adjusting line, character, and word spacing to deliver a more accessible reading experience to users. Further, the Shortcuts app on Mac and Apple Watch starting this week will help recommend accessibility features based on user preferences using a new Accessibility Assistant shortcut.

Apple Maps will also get a new guide from the National Park Foundation, Park Access for All, to help users discover accessible features, programmes, and services to explore in parks across the US Guides from Gallaudet University. It will additionally highlight businesses and organisations that value, embrace, and prioritise the Deaf community and signed languages.

Users will also get accessibility-focussed apps and stories from developers in the App Store as well as the Transforming Our World collection in Apple Books with stories by and about people with disabilities. Apple Music will also highlight the Saylists playlists where each will focus on a different sound.

Similarly, the Apple TV app will feature the latest hit movies and shows featuring authentic representation of people with disabilities.

Users will also get the ability to explore guest-curated collections from the accessibility community’s standout actors, including Marlee Matlin (“CODA”), Lauren Ridloff (“Eternals”), Selma Blair (“Introducing, Selma Blair”), and Ali Stroker (“Christmas Ever After”), among others.

The Apple Fitness+ service this week will also bring trainer Bakari Williams who will use American Sign Language (ASL) highlight features, including Audio Hints, which are short descriptive verbal cues to support visually impaired or low vision users, and Time to Walk and Time to Run episodes becoming “Time to Walk or Push” and “Time to Run or Push” for wheelchair users.

ASL will also be a part of every workout and meditation on Apple Fitness+, and all videos will include closed captioning in six languages. Trainers will also demonstrate modifications in each workout to help people requiring accessibility assistance join in.

Apple is additionally launching SignTime to connect Apple Store and Apple Support customers with on-demand ASL interpreters. SignTime is already available for customers in the US using ASL, the UK using British Sign Language (BSL), and France using French Sign Language (LSF). Furthermore, Apple Store locations around the world have already started offering live sessions throughout the week to help customers discover accessibility features on iPhone, and Apple Support social channels are showcasing how-to content, the company said.

WhatsApp Premium Subscription Model Under Testing for Business Profiles: Report

WhatsApp Premium, a subscription-based model, is being tested for WhatsApp Business, a report has said. Under this model, business accounts may choose to pay a certain sum for various features and capabilities. Reportedly, WhatsApp Business profile owners can also opt out of WhatsApp Premium and continue using the current version. The first mention of a subscription plan was in April when it was reported that the feature will allow businesses to link up to 10 devices after they subscribe to a plan.

The development has been reported by WABetainfo, and the platform says that WhatsApp Premium is being tested for Android, Desktop as well as iOS. The platform says that the feature is exclusively for business accounts and is optional. Details of the subscription plans are not known yet, but it is expected that subscribing to the feature will allow WhatsApp Business profiles to get additional features.

WABetainfo says that one of the features that WhatsApp Premium could offer users is the ability to link and name up to 10 devices. Normally users can link up to four devices when using multi-device. In addition, WhatsApp may also allow businesses to create a unique custom business link. It is to be noted that businesses can already use short links allowing customers to contact them. A custom link is expected to have the same purpose as a short link but a custom link may be easy to remember and also provide branding.

Recently it was reported that WhatsApp was testing chat filters – currently only available on WhatsApp Business – for all users, providing an easy way to find certain chats. WhatsApp has also started identifying “legal” names of users who have enabled the UPI-based payments feature on its app. WhatsApp is also working on an improvement to user profiles that could allow users to set a cover image on their WhatsApp Business profiles, a report said.

Wearables Market in India Grew 20.1 Percent YoY in Q1 2022, Indian Brands Capture Top Positions: IDC

Wearables market in India that consists of smartwatches, earbuds, and wristbands grew by 20.1 percent year-on-year (YoY) in the first quarter of 2022, according to a report by IDC. While watches continued to be the fastest-growing category in the quarter between January to March, by shipping 3.7 million units with a growth of 173 percent, wrist bands continued to decline annually for the ninth consecutive quarter. Moreover, Boat, Noise, OnePlus, Fire-Boltt, and Realme emerged among the top five brands in the wearables market in the first quarter.

Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) latest report says that the average selling price (ASP) of the overall wearables category has declined by 17.1 percent YoY primarily due to a stronger decline in the ASP of watches.

In terms of segments, as mentioned, watches retained their fastest growth in the Indian wearables market with 3.7 million shipments and a growth of 173 percent YoY in the first quarter of 2022. While the basic watches accounted for 95.1 percent of the overall watch category shipments with a growth of 202.1 percent YoY, the smartwatch shipments have declined 4.2 percent annually, as per the report.

Moreover, the overall wristwear segment (which includes watches and wrist bands) has witnessed a growth of 87.5 percent in Q122, with a total shipment of 4 million units.

The earwear segment, on the other hand, grew 48.3 percent YoY and also accounted for 71.3 percent of the overall wearables category in the first quarter.

“Aggressive discounts, new features, and a strong push from brands and channel partners are encouraging consumers to upgrade and spend more on wearable watches,” says Anisha Dumbre, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India. “While dependence on devices like TWS and wearable watches is increasing, supply remains a concern for the industry. Intense competition in the sub $50 (roughly Rs.3,880) category is pushing all brands to offer competitive offerings in terms of pricing, features, and device design,” Dumbre added.

Indian brands Boat having 5.2 percent YoY growth with a 22.9 percent market share and Noise having 150.1 percent YoY growth with a 10.9 percent market share captured the top two positions among the top five emerging wearable brands in Q1 2022.

OnePlus, on the other hand, took the third position with a 13.8 percent market share, but was the only player in the top five to register a decline of 35.8 percent YoY in the quarter, the report noted.

Indian brand, Fire-Boltt entered the fourth position with a 6.6 percent market share, while Realme managed to capture fifth place by witnessing a growth of 26.6 percent YoY in Q1 2022.

“The outlook for 2022 remains strong as wearables will try to attract users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The healthy growth is attracting newer players to the market, as brands in the other devices and accessory space are entering,” says Upasana Joshi, Research Manager, IDC India. With the continuing push from the brands, 2Q22 (Apr-Jun) is expected to see healthy YoY growth. The aggressive offers, sales, and marketing around the festive season in 2H22 (Jul-Dec) are expected to continue this growth momentum through the year for the wearable device categories.

She further adds, “With the PLI scheme for wearables announced by the government, key players in the ecosystem have begun foraying into local manufacturing of these devices and launching ‘Made in India’ products, possibly leading to further lowering of the ASPs.”.

Apple Testing Electronic Paper Displays for Its Foldable Devices: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple is reportedly testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for its future foldable devices and tablets, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The analyst also suggested that the colour EPD displays made by E Ink have the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable device cover screens. Kuo had also recently said that AirPods, Magic Keyboard, Trackpad, Mouse, and MagSafe battery along with iPhone handsets would switch to USB Type-C in the foreseeable future.

Kuo mentioned in a recent tweet that the Apple is testing EPD for its future foldable device’s cover screen and tablet-like applications. As mentioned earlier, Kuo also suggested that the colour EPD could become a mainstream solution for foldable devices’ must-have cover or second screen due to its power-saving capacity.

AirPods, Magic Keyboard, Trackpad, Mouse, and MagSafe battery along with iPhone handsets would also switch to USB Type-C in the foreseeable future, as per Kuo. The Apple analyst said that this is possible because the Cupertino-based company is not yet primed to reach its goal of going completely portless. The development comes a few days after a Mark Gurman report said Apple is testing iPhone models with USB Type-C ports, and an earlier report by Kuo himself, who said the first such iPhone can be expected next year.

Kuo had said via Twitter that the portless iPhone may cause more problems due to current limitations of wireless technologies and the immature MagSafe ecosystem forcing Apple to wait a little more in order to achieve its goal of going completely portless. His latest comments built on his previous claims according to which Apple would be swapping out the Lightning port for USB Type-C in the second half of 2023. This means that the upcoming iPhone 15 models could come housing a USB Type-C port. Apple introduced the Lightning port with the iPhone 5 in 2012.
