5 things to know about the STC

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Ghobrial considers himself a very engaged, hands-on coach and he enjoys working side-by-side with his players.

“My coaching style is something to where, if I can’t show a player how to do it then I don’t feel comfortable teaching them that,” he’s said. “I always try to put myself in the mindset of them and if I’m asking them to do something very difficult, I want to know that. And how I can help those guys is actually being able to do it.

“Now, obviously, I can’t do that at the level of some of these guys but it puts me in the mindset of giving the guys the necessary tools to win, you know, having experienced it myself. And also just playing around with schematics and stuff.”

Paul Robinson downplays chances of Manchester United going after Ryan Sessegnon – Man United News And Transfer News

1

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paul Robinson has poured cold water on reports linking Ryan Sessegnon with a move to Manchester United.

Earlier in the transfer window, the left-back was linked with a surprise loan move to Old Trafford.

United had already conducted a similar deal with Spurs in the summer, when they agreed a last-minute loan deal for Sergio Reguilon on the final day of the window.

An unexpected injury crisis had left Erik ten Hag without either of his senior left-backs as Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia were both set for long-term absences through injury.

A few days before this unfortunate development, the club had already agreed a loan move for Brandon Williams to be re-united with Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town.

Similarly, Alvaro Fernandez was close to signing for La Liga side Granada on loan. Ten Hag did not believe the young Spaniard was ready to start consistently in the Premier League and so a more experienced left-back became a priority in the final days of the window.

The club quickly settled on Reguilon as Spurs were happy for him to depart on an inexpensive loan.

Fast forward to the beginning of January, with Shaw and Malacia both set to return this month and Diogo Dalot demonstrating the ability to switch sides to left-back, United decided to terminate the deal for the Spurs left-back.

Reguilon promptly returned to London, eventually joining Brentford on loan instead.

Rather bizarrely, however, it was then reported that United may use the “open channel” of dialogue established with Spurs over this deal to sign Sessegnon on loan. One left-back in, one left-back out constituting a rather surprising tactic in the transfer market.

Robinson does not believe any such deal will come to fruition, however.

The former goalkeeper stated: “With Sessegnon his lack of first-team football would be his problem. I’d be surprised if United came in for him simply due to his lack of game time in his Premier League.”

The Peoples Person would be similarly shocked Paul!

New York Giants hire Michael Ghobrial as special teams coordinator

The New York Giants have announced the hire of Michael Ghobrial as their special teams coordinator.

Ghobrial had been with the New York Jets as their assistant special teams coach since 2021. Before that, he served as a special teams coordinator at three different college programs, including Washington State (2020), Hawaii (2018-19) and Tarleton State (2016-17).

In 2017, Ghobrial also spent time with the Detroit Lions as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.

More on Ghobrial’s football career:

Ghobrial began his coaching career at his alma mater, UCLA, first as an undergrad assistant (2009-10), then a quality control coach (2011) and finally as a graduate assistant (2012-13). Following his time with the Bruins, he coached at Syracuse (2014) and Colorado Mesa (2015), serving as the team’s co-special teams coordinator in addition to coaching the defensive line and outside linebackers.

Ghobrial spent two seasons as a defensive end with UCLA, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in social science and comparative education.

For Ghobrial, who is replacing Thomas McGaughey, this will be his first special teams coordinator job at the NFL level.

In addition to Ghobrial, the Giants also interviewed Matt Harper (49ers assistant special teams coach), Carlos Polk (Bears assistant special teams coach), and Larry Izzo (Seahawks special teams coordinator).

New York had also requested interviews with Ryan Ficken (Chargers), Chris Tabor (Panthers), and Marquice Williams (Falcons) but were denied.

Bulls, Pistons in talks on Zach LaVine trades

The Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons are in trade discussions regarding Zach LaVine, but the Pistons find the Bulls’ asking price too steep. Detroit values Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson as untouchable assets and has no intention of including them in any trade.

Chicago has proposed a package involving Bojan Bogdanovic and one of the Pistons’ key players, but Detroit has stood firm. There’s a possibility of re-engagement if the Bulls reconsider their asking price before the trade deadline.

Shaq: Bol Bol can do everything better than Victor Wembanyama… He’s just lazy

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal recently stirred controversy by asserting that Bol Bol possesses the same skill set as San Antonio Spurs’ rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, with one major caveat – laziness.

In a candid statement on The Big Podcast with Shaq, O’Neal confidently stated, “Bol Bol can do everything Wemby can do and even a little better: dribble behind the back, shoot the three, nice handle, the floater game. He’s just lazy.”

Tommy DeVito wants Giants to call the Brink’s truck for Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants have another key decision to make this offseason in regards to star running back Saquon Barkley’s future.

Do they slap the franchise tag on him again if the two parties can’t agree on a contract extension or do they let the fan favorite test the free agent waters?

Quarterback Tommy DeVito, who made a splash this season by leading the Giants to three consecutive wins and putting them back in the playoff picture (albeit temporarily), was asked in a recent interview what his pitch would be to Saquon and the Giants to continue their relationship.

“That is my man,” DeVito told Complex. “I want the best for him in any way situation. I want them to call the Brink’s truck and come drop off the cash at the front door. Now I hope is for the Giants cause I want him to be in the backfield with me and all my team because I think he is the best teammate in the NFL, the best teammate I’ve had around.

“Obviously, I’ve played one year in the league but I’ve played a lot of football. He’s the best teammate that I’ve ever been around in my life. Hands down for sure.”

Naturally, it will come down to the numbers. The Giants have approximately $35-38 million in available cap space this offseason and have a long laundry list of needs to address. Barkley is just one of those ‘to-do’ items.

“Now, I hope it’s with the Giants,” continued DeVito. “But if not, somebody call the bank because the bank is coming because this man needs to get paid. You’re my man, you’re my man for real. Now you can come run it back and we can get right. But at the same time, I want you to get your paper, you know what I mean?”

Barkley responded by saying, “Great answer, my dog.”

The period to place the franchise tag on a player begins on Feb. 20 and runs through March 5. Free agency begins March 13.
