Stephan Jaeger birdies 18th to take 1-shot lead at Farmers

SAN DIEGO — Stephan Jaeger sank a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 18 at Torrey Pines South for a one-shot lead in the third round of the Farmers Insurance Open on Friday, moments after Thomas Detry‘s third shot landed well past the hole and spun back into the pond fronting the green, leading to a double bogey that cost him the lead.

It was a tough day of high scores on the blufftop municipal gem high above the Pacific Ocean. Detry took biggest gut punch when he went from a one-shot lead on the 18th tee to dropping two shots off the pace.

Jaeger, a German who lives in Tennessee, had a 1-over 73 and was at 11-under 205 through 54 holes. Matthieu Pavon (72) of France and Nicolai Hojgaard (73) of Denmark were at 10-under while Detry, of Belgium, was 9 under after his 73.

There very well could be a first-time winner on the PGA Tour after the final round. Jaeger has never won on tour, and neither has any of the eight players within three shots of him. The tournament ends on Saturday to avoid conflict with the NFL’s conference title games.

Detry, playing in the final group with Jaeger and Hojgaard, was at 11 under going into the 543-yard, par-5 18th with the backdrop of a brilliant sunset. He hit a 293-yard drive and a 162-yard second shot that left him 92 yards from the hole. After his wedge spun too hard and scooted into the pond, Detry covered his face with his right hand.

“I hit an amazing drive. I drove it great on 18,” he said. “I was just in between 3-wood, hybrid. It’s been a very long day. I think we played in 5 hours 45 (minutes). I had a little bit of mud on the ball. The lie wasn’t perfect, the light was starting to be — it was starting to be dark.

“There was a couple of different factors that were not in my favor,” he said. “Obviously short is a no-go. So we decided to be smart and there we go, I got punched in the face.”

After taking a penalty, he hit to within 24 feet and two-putted.

The pond is known as Devlin’s Billabong for Australian Bruce Devlin, who was in contention for the 1975 Andy Williams San Diego Open before taking seven hacks to get his ball out of the water on his way to a 10.

There were a number of factors for the high scores, including tough pin placements and thick rough that was soaked during a storm Monday that overwhelmed parts of the city.

“I think most of the greens here slope from back to front and there was a lot of back flags,” Detry said. “So, I mean, if you’re coming in with a wedge, you obviously got a lot of spin. It’s almost impossible to get it all the way back there because obviously long miss is no-go as well. I think that was probably one of the main reasons.

“Also, with all the rain and obviously the heat the last couple of days, I think the rough is juicier than ever. Obviously the greens with that many players making the cut and people walking on those greens, the greens being soft as well, it’s not easy to make putts out there.”

Five players were tied at 8 under while nine were 7 under, including Xander Schauffele, a San Diegan who is ranked No. 5 in the world, and Tony Finau.

Manchester United eyeing surprise January swoop for Moroccan gem Bilal El Khannouss – Man United News And Transfer News

1

Since the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, Manchester United have often brought in experienced stars who are looking for their last big pay day.

This ploy has not worked out in the best way and INEOS, who are set to assume control over sporting affairs at the club, are expected to change this going forward.

Younger players are expected to be targeted as seen from links with Michael Olise, Jarrad Branthwaite just to name a few.

Midfield in one area desperately in need of fresh legs with Sir Jim Ratcliffe keen to get rid of Casemiro while Christian Eriksen is being eyed by Saudi Arabian clubs and Galatasaray.

United eyeing young gem

A surprising name has been added to the list by Football Transfers in the form of 19-year-old KRC Genk midfielder Bilal El Khannouss.

The youngster is making rapid strides and earned a call-up to the Morocco national team at the age of 18 and even represented his nation in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Moroccan has made 34 appearances in all competitions this season, registering three goals and five assists while mainly being deployed as the attacking playmaker.

El Khannouss is versatile and has played largely as the central midfielder for his country while he has often been deployed out wide when required.

Versatility is a trait highly valued by Erik ten Hag and the Genk star’s skillset has been likened to United’s Danish midfielder.

Having a younger version of Eriksen would be a god-send but United are not alone in the race with Liverpool also eyeing a deal.

“Manchester United and Liverpool have set their sights on Moroccan international Bilal El Khannouss, FootballTransfers has been told.

Liverpool vs United for Bilal El Khannouss

“Sources have informed us that Man Utd, under their new partial owner INEOS, aim to secure a solid foundation for the future, and one name emerging in their sights is the youthful attacker.

“The 19-year-old midfielder has become a highly sought-after name in European football, attracting attention from various clubs, including Premier League rivals Liverpool.

“Both scouting teams have been closely monitoring the teenager, believing he can grow into a key player. His flexibility is seen as a valuable asset, drawing comparisons to Christian Eriksen.”

Genk are likely to demand a fee in the region of €25-€30 million and while the likelihood of a deal in January is unlikely, the Red Devils could accelerate should they manage to raise cash via outgoings.

Donny van de Beek continues to make little to no impression in Germany – Man United News And Transfer News

5

Donny van de Beek continued his mediocre spell in Germany on Friday night.

Despite starting Eintracht Frankfurt’s encounter with Mainz, the 26 year old only managed to play 45 minutes.

The 2022 Europa League winners were able to grab a winner in the 72nd minute when Mario Gotze scored the decisive goal.

The home side were able to control the possession with 56% and had more shots with 11 to seven in their favour.

Van de Beek has struggled to make any sort of impact in Germany as of yet and tonight’s game was no exception.

The former Ajax man put in another forgettable performance and Sofascore gave him a rating of 6.5.

Starting again in a more advanced right wing role, the Dutchman failed to have any impact in an offensive sense.

Van de Beek recorded zero shots, had zero shots blocked and made no dribble attempts.

The midfielder was also barely involved in the match from a passing perspective. The United player only managed 14 touches in the whole time he was on the pitch and a total of eight passes, of which only five found their target.

The Dutch international was also quite careless with the ball, losing possession six times in the match.

The 26 year old was a little more active on the defensive end, blocking one shot and making one tackle.

Nonetheless, it is clear that despite a change of scenery, the former Ajax man is seemingly incapable of making a mark on proceedings.

The man from Nijkerkerveen has been given three consecutive starts to show his worth but has hardly had any influence for his new side. One of the most frequently aimed criticisms of Van de Beek at Manchester United was his ability to disappear in games.

It appears that his ghost impressions are still very much on show in the Bundesliga.

With the win, Frankfurt move within two points of the Champions League spots. Next up for Die Adler is a trip to Koln next Saturday where Van de Beek will be hoping to eventually kickstart his career in Germany. If he doesn’t, his career could slowly be disappearing before his eyes.

Manchester United rejected chance to sign Mohammed Kudus and Ibrahim Osman for €12 million – Man United News And Transfer News

4

Manchester United’s tale of “what if” in the transfer market is almost as long as their list of actually completed transfers, perhaps longer even.

From Erling Haaland being offered to the club for pennies at 17, or the numerous times United “almost signed” Wesley Sneijder, if one was to create a team of “what ifs”, it would arguably beat the current side, not that the current side is making it difficult right now.

Two names can be added to that “what if” list as Football Insider reports that United rejected the chance to sign two top Ghanaian talents for a combined €12 million.

Danish club FC Nordsjaelland offered United the chance to sign Mohammed Kudus and Ibrahim Osman for €6 million each.

United rejected it, terming it too expensive at the time.

Since then, that stand has aged like milk, with Kudus, in particular, now probably worth 10 times that price alone.

Even Osman has been targeted by the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham but he’s expected to join up with Kudus at West Ham.

The winger is valued at close to €20 million, effectively turning the pair into a worth of €80 million or so.

While Osman is yet to prove himself at the biggest stage, the Kudus case is the one that got away, not once, but twice.

For a manager now infamous for going back to Ajax/known players in the market, Kudus‘ performance for West Ham after joining from Ajax doesn’t reflect well on Erik ten Hag.

To now know that he was offered for just €6 million is then another case of a huge “what if”.

In a parallel world, where United are actually intelligent in the market instead of doing deals like €80 million for Antony, Kudus and Erling Haaland would be wreaking havoc on the opposition at Old Trafford.

As it currently stands, both are still wreaking havoc, just against United.

Damian Lillard: I haven’t seen a team have success; and then something like this happens

Here’s Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard on his reaction to the firing of Adrian Griffin.

(via Milwaukee Bucks):

“I think it was like everybody else, just kind of surprised by it. As long as I’ve been in the league I haven’t seen where a team is having success; and then something like that happens. But I’ve also been around long enough to know that it’s part of the business. There’s expectations.

PFF names Wan’Dale Robinson as Giants’ 2024 breakout candidate

2023 is still ongoing — for four teams, anyhow — but the rest of the NFL is preparing for the upcoming 2024 season.

Pro Football Focus is staying ahead of the curve by identifying one early breakout player for each of the 32 NFL teams for 2024.

For the New York Giants, PFF’s Jonathan Macri chose third-year wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson.

After tearing his ACL in his rookie season, Robinson returned as a more stable part of the Giants offense in 2023. His 76 targets tied for the team lead with Darius Slayton despite appearing in two fewer games, and he finished with the fourth-highest catch rate (78.9%) among the league’s wide receivers (min. 20% of targets). The Giants currently have five pending free agents at the position heading into the 2024 offseason, which could allow Robinson to contribute even further in Year 3.

All true. Robinson seemed to be the Giants’ go-to guy after tight end Darren Waller went out with a hamstring injury. Why they are picking Robinson to be a ‘breakout’ player when his role appears to be a short-to-medium yardage option (his YPR average was just 8.8 in 2023 and scored just one touchdown) could be a stretch.

Although Macri does make a few good points about the Giants’ 2024 wide receiver room, they don’t actually don’t have five impending free agents.

Parris Campbell is not returning, Sterling Shepard could likely retire, Gunner Olszewski is basically a returner and Isaiah Hodgins is restricted.

The depth chart will have Slayton, Jalin Hyatt, and Robinson penciled in as starters with Bryce Ford-Wheaton and recently signed Chase Cota behind them.

Many expect the Giants to select a wide receiver early in the draft, possibly in the first round, so Robinson may actually see his targets reduced in 2024, especially if Waller stays healthy for the entire season.

Jon Horst: I’m really frustrated by the narrative that Adrian Griffin lost the locker room

Milwaukee Bucks GM Jon Horst wants to make it clear that former head coach Adrian Griffin didn’t lose the locker room.

(via Milwaukee Bucks):

“Honestly, going through this in the last however many hours, my biggest frustration with kind of the aftermath is that that’s the narrative. Doesn’t mean that I’m right or wrong, but my opinion, my assessment, the ownership’s assessment in going through this wasn’t an assessment that he lost the locker room, that there was dysfunction, that there was players jumping off a ship.

Newport County excited for the arrival of Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend – Man United News And Transfer News

2

Manchester United travel to Newport County this weekend for the FA Cup fourth round tie at Rodney Parade.

Erik ten Hag’s men will be desperate to avoid slipping up against the Welsh side who are one of the lowest ranked teams left in competition.

The League Two club are naturally delighted to be welcoming the biggest football club in the country to their humble abode on Sunday with the Newport fans gearing up for a day to remember.

BBC Wales report the “buzz” around the town with the highly anticipated game already a registered sell out.

It will be the first meeting between the two sides with the fixture worth a reported £400,000 to the club that is thought to have the lowest budget in League Two.

However, it isn’t the first time United have helped out the side from south Wales with a classy gesture from the Red Devils back in 1976 keeping Newport afloat.

As reported by BBC news, United sent a team of stars to play a ‘south Wales XI’ so that County could raise some funds to ease some of the financial pressure they were under at the time.

United, then managed by Tommy Docherty, took a strong side on the day which included internationals such as Alex Stepney, Sammy McIlroy, Lou Macari, Steve Coppell and Gordon Hill.

United lost 0-1, but it was the £8,000 raised that helped ensure Newport survived financially in a season which saw them narrowly avoid relegation from the football league that was the real success.

However, the old club did finally go out of business in 1989 after being in existence for 77 years but Newport County AFC was formed from the ashes and this weekend’s fixture could well represent the biggest fixture in their history.

United are looking to reach back-to-back finals in the Cup and Ten Hag will be hoping a good run in the competition can ease the pressure currently heaped on his shoulders.

Having been dumped out of Europe and well behind the chasing pack in the Premier League, the FA Cup represents United’s last chance of scooping some silverware in what has been a season to forget so far.
