Inter Milan ‘increasingly confident’ of Romelu Lukaku loan return as hefty loan fee slashed

Inter Milan ‘increasingly confident’ of Romelu Lukaku loan return as hefty loan fee slashed

Inter Milan are increasingly confident of landing Romelu Lukaku on a season long loan, just 12 months after they sold him to Chelsea for 100m euros.

The striker became both the Italian side’s record sale and the Blues’ record signing when he made the switch last summer after a prolific season in Serie A. However, he had a torrid time at Stamford Bridge, and by November had already admitted he was longing for a return to Italy.

Come the end of the season, he had registered just 8 Premier League goals, and set a new record for the fewest touches in a game when Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in February.

Now, however, it seems as though his west London nightmare may be coming to an end, with Inter ‘increasingly confident’ of a loan move for the 29 year old, as per the reliable Nizaar Kinsella.

This comes as Chelsea have shown willingness to compromise on what was an initially demanded 25m euro loan fee, with an agreement expected to be struck at a much more reasonable £10m, with Lukaku ‘pushing hard’ for an exit.

There is work still to be done, however- Inter Milan offered just £6m in the most recent round of talks, though all parties suggest that they were ‘positive’. It now seems to be a matter of when, not if, a loan deal is struck.

What next for Chelsea?

A move away for Lukaku will see Chelsea looking for a third striker in as many seasons, with both Lukaku and Timo Werner having flattered to deceive. They could make a move for Gabriel Jesus, but that ship may sail if they drag their feet with Arsenal and Tottenham also thought to be keen on the Brazilian and Jesus himself wanting a quick outcome this summer.

Alternatively, they could promote Kai Havertz to their no.1 option to lead the line, and use youth talent Armando Broja as backup following his impressive loan spell with Southampton.

Fred VanVleet Sounds off on Being a Toronto Raptor Lifer

Fred VanVleet has spent his entire NBA career up north with the Toronto Raptor, winning a title in 2019 and becoming the first undrafted free agent to earn an All-Star bid this past season.

The Wichita State product has two years remaining in his four-year deal (player option for the fourth year) and is eligible to sign a contract extension on July 8. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Raptors are looking to negotiate a three-four-year max extension. VanVleet himself has made it clear that he wants to stay in Toronto and be a Raptor lifer when he retires.

“I love being a Raptor,” VanVleet said in an interview with Daily Hive. “I would love to spend my entire career here. We have a great relationship with the city, the franchise, ownership, and management — it’s a match made in heaven for me. I love being a Toronto Raptor.”

3 Chiefs players fighting for their jobs in training camp

ST JOSEPH, MISSOURI – JULY 28: Wide receiver Mecole Hardman #17 of the Kansas City Chiefs catches a pass against defensive back Deandre Baker #30, during training camp at Missouri Western State University on July 28, 2021 in St Joseph, Missouri. (Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images)

Which Kansas City Chiefs players will be fighting for their jobs in training camp?

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of yet another playoff appearance (their seventh in a row and eighth in the last nine years) and another first-place finish in the AFC West.

The team won the 2019 Super Bowl, lost it in 2020 and was eliminated in a heartbreaking AFC Championship defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals, who beat the Chiefs 27-24 in overtime.

Kansas City will also be without otherworldly receiver Tyreek Hill who they traded to the Miami Dolphins in March for five draft picks. He will suit up for another organization for the first time in his professional career after making six consecutive Pro Bowls with the Chiefs.

In the upcoming season, the Chiefs will once again have their offense led by a deadly combination of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce with their defense led by Chris Jones.

Who are three players that will be fight for their jobs come training camp?

3. CB DeAndre Baker

The Chiefs’ front office wasted no time in this year’s draft when they took cornerbacks in the first, fourth and seventh round, only to trade for another corner in Lonnie Johnson after the draft.

One could make the assumption this corner-heavy approach means the Chiefs’ brass isn’t satisfied with their current group of cornerbacks. The addition of Johnson, a player with three years of NFL experience under his belt already, could signal the end for DeAndre Baker, who as of now has not really performed all that well for Kansas City.

The 24-year-old Baker only made 10 appearances across two seasons for the Chiefs before. Not to mention, he’s had some questionable off-field issues including four counts of robbery with a firearm back in 2020. The charges against Baker were dropped but this remains a stain on his reputation. It may be time for the Chiefs to cut bait with Baker and move on to the next option.

Rookie Naz Hillmon is Ready to Embrace Her Role on the Atlanta Dream

After an illustrious career at Michigan, Atlanta Dream rookie Naz Hillmon enters the WNBA poised to bring the same swagger that made her a fan favorite in Ann Arbor.

There is rarely a single path to success. Atlanta Dream rookie Naz Hillmon is a testament to that. Despite being a third generation college player and a second generation pro—Hillmon’s mom, NaSheema Anderson, played at Vanderbilt and in the American Basketball League, and her grandmother, Gail Williams, played at Bethune-Cookman and Cleveland State—the 6-2 power forward did not make her way into the WNBA on a red carpet; she had to grind for hers.

“I always thought about playing at the professional level, but I didn’t necessarily see it as a reality for me until maybe sophomore year of college,” says Hillmon. “I think that it took that long because I was thinking about the politics of it. I wasn’t a Jordan or McDonald’s [All American] kid, and for a while I thought that all of that really mattered at the next level.”

At Michigan, Hillmon’s game trumped all politics. She not only led the team to an Elite Eight appearance, but the two-way star also became the first ever in program history to be named an AP All-American.

Hillmon will face a similar situation in Atlanta as she did in Ann Arbor, with the Dream coming off an 8-24 season and in complete rebuild mode with a new coach and several new players.

“Coach [Tanisha] Wright has told me that my role in helping this team be successful is being who I have been and doing what I’ve been doing,” she says. “That’s giving my energy and effort every day.”

Shakira Austin After Her Clutch Double-Double: ‘I’m Like That’

Shakira Austin notched the second double-double of her young career and received a rousing standing ovation after playing a pivotal role in the Mystics beating the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday, 83-65.

The double-digit win avenges their overtime loss to Phoenix on Sunday.

Austin finished with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds while battling Tina Charles, who scored 19 points. Austin also had this memorable interview with ESPN’s Holly Rowe, letting the longtime women’s basketball reporter and the world know “I’m Like That.”

According to the Washington Post, Austin walked into the postgame media session proclaiming “I’m tired,” with two large ice bags wrapped around her knees. Austin was in the trenches for 26 minutes, digging under Charles so much that the former MVP hacked Austin after the rookie forced a Charles miss.

The former Ole Miss Rebel got hers against Charles, beating the WNBA legend off the dribble before banking in a running hook.

She has no fear,” Coach Mike Thibault said. “She just doesn’t. We interviewed her for the draft, and she was looking forward to all these players to play against because they were people she had looked up to — She’s tried to steal from parts of their games, and she wants to go test herself against them.”

Natasha Cloud (six points and 10 assists) added: “She’s a dog. She’s a dog — She is going to have respect for who you are, but she don’t care at the end of the day. She knows who she is, too.”

The Mystics (10-6) return to action on Thursday with a road game against the New York Liberty.

Commanders give strong update on Terry McLaurin trade rumors

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera divulges on the trade rumors surrounding star Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

As soon as the news broke that Terry McLaurin was holding out from mandatory minicamp to negotiate a new contract, NFL trade rumors began swirling around the league. McLaurin was imagined as an asset in Kansas City and Green Bay, but it turns out the jersey swaps were a little premature: the Commanders have no interest in shipping off their star receiver.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera explicitly stated that the team isn’t trading Terry McLaurin.

“We’re trying to get this done…We believe in who Terry is for us and what he can bring to the table,” Rivera said.

Ron Rivera: Washington Commanders want Terry McLaurin amid trade rumors

Ron Rivera clearly wants to factor McLaurin into his 2022 gameplan, but that doesn’t guarantee that general manager Martin Mayhew will heed Rivera’s words.

That being said, improving McLaurin’s contract isn’t much of a stretch: the wideout in top 10 WR conversations has been paid about $3 million for his first three NFL seasons, and he doesn’t stand to break $6 million on his current deal. Getting McLaurin more money shouldn’t be difficult, but the question is how much McLaurin wants on the table.

Going by the top 10 active wide receiver contracts in the NFL, recent Jacksonville Jaguars acquisition Christian Kirk is set to make $72 million over four years, but that’s been widely regarded as an overinflated price for a wideout who quietly played in Arizona before his massive deal.

While McLaurin likely won’t break $20 million a year, the fact that he’s earning a fraction of what rookie Jahan Dotson is set to make — $15 million over 4 years — means that McLaurin is severely underpaid for what he brings to the team. In fact, McLaurin ranks No. 4 in pay among Commanders wide receivers, lagging behind Curtis Samuel, Jahan Dotson and Dyami Brown.

By holding out of minicamp, McLaurin is showing the Commanders exactly what they’re missing if he does leave — even though he hardly makes a dent in their cap space, his presence would leave a gaping hole on their offense.

It makes sense that Rivera is working hard to keep McLaurin, but the multifaceted wideout can’t be blamed for liking posts about playing for Reggie Wayne in Indianapolis.

Steelers give star safety record extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed Minkah Fitzpatrick to a record contract extension, making him the highest-paid safety in NFL history.

Last offseason, Pittsburgh signed T.J. Watt to a record deal. This offseason, it’s Minkah’s turn.

The Steelers are a team which relies heavily on their defense. Especially without Ben Roethlisberger moving forward, Pittsburgh will be forced to hold other teams to reasonable point margins if they are to succeed, and contest for a playoff spot. Mitch Trubisky remains Mitch Trubisky, even if he’s improved slightly. Kenny Pickett needs time to improve. And Mason Rudolph…let’s just shut that door now.

But Fitzpatrick is among the best defensive players in football at his best. He can patrol one side of the secondary on his lonesome. Plus, the Steelers gave up a first-round pick to land him in the first place. Signing him, whatever the cost, was a no-brainer.

Minkah Fitzpatrick contract: Steelers make history

Fitzpatrick’s new deal will pay him $18.4 million over the four years of the deal. It does make him the highest-paid safety in NFL history for now.

Given Roethlisberger is now off the books, Pittsburgh had money to spend this offseason. While they brought in Trubisky, the majority of those funds have gone in-house, to keep their key contributors — especially on defense — happy.

Fitzpatrick and Watt are the makeup of this team. Whether it’s possible to still claim the phrase ‘defense wins championships’ in 2022 remains to be seen, but expect the Steelers to test the theory, at the very least.

Assessing the England squad’s World Cup hopes after June matches

England’s latest international break drew to a close on Tuesday evening in very disappointing fashion.

The Three Lions played four games during June, failing to win a single one and scoring just a solitary goal.

Now, with England having very few games left before the upcoming World Cup in November, 101 have decided to assess England’s current side and decide how close they are to getting a spot at Qatar.

We have also opted to include a few names who did not take part in the current break for various reasons.

Goalkeepers

Jordan Pickford – On the plane

It is quite clear he remains England’s no.1 and Southgate will trust him no matter his club form.

Nick Pope – Airport lounge

There is little competition for England’s third-choice keeper at present, though Pope could lose his place if Dean Henderson has a good start to next season.

Aaron Ramsdale – On the plane

Is almost certainly set to be in Qatar later this year, but his displays in June did little to suggest he should replace Pickford as England’s no.1.

Defenders

Conor Coady – Airport lounge

Probably the worst centre-back on this list, but Southgate is a fan and he can play well in a back-three if England use it.

Marc Guehi – At home

Didn’t do much wrong during the June break but also didn’t do enough to earn Southgate’s favour over someone like Coady.

Harry Maguire – On the plane

As strange as this may sound, Maguire is one of England’s more reliable centre-backs and his ball distribution is key for the Three Lions.

John Stones – On the plane

A poor June that saw him sent off vs Hungary. However, he is a favourite of Southgate and has impressed for England previously.

Fikayo Tomori – Airport lounge

Showed signs of quality during the break. Is staking a claim to become England’s third-choice centre-back behind Stones and Maguire.

Ben White – At home

Was called up to England’s latest squad but then missed out due to injury. As a result, the likes of Tomori and Coady are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Kieran Trippier – On the plane

One of Southgate’s favourites who can also be used as a left-back if needed.

Kyle Walker – On the plane

Has been England’s main right-back for some time now and his pace also allows England to use a three-back formation despite the lack of speed Maguire and Stones have.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – Airport lounge

Has a chance of being taken to Qatar simply because of his Liverpool form, but he is yet to set the world alight for England.

Reece James – On the plane

James is unlikely to be England’s starting right-back this summer as Southgate does tend to stick with his favourites. But the Chelsea man showed he can be used at left-back vs Hungary and has shown for his club he can also fill the Kyle Walker role in a back-three, making him a very valuable squad player.

James Justin – At home

Wasn’t terrible during England’s latest games but they simply have too many right-backs.

Midfielders

Jude Bellingham – On the plane

Offered a different dimension to England’s midfield when he was introduced off the bench vs Germany. Is a serious talent and should be considered to fill the role next to Declan Rice, which would allow him to get forward and provide England with an extra attacking threat.

Conor Gallagher – At home

Gallagher wasn’t bad for England this month, but he did little of note and there are already too many midfielders Southgate prefers ahead of him. His game time next season also remains up in the air.

Kalvin Phillips – On the plane

Has impressed for England in the past at major tournaments and is expected to partner Rice in midfield.

Jordan Henderson – On the plane

Henderson wasn’t included in the June squad because Southgate said he knew everything he needs to know about the midfielder. But his experience and leadership is something Southgate will no doubt look to bring to Qatar.

Declan Rice – On the plane

Will be England’s holding midfielder at the 2022 World Cup.

James Ward-Prowse – Airport lounge

Did little of note during England’s latest set of fixtures but he stands a chance of going to Qatar simply because Southgate likes him.

Mason Mount – On the plane

Another favourite of Southgate who is sure to be included in the squad. Mount showed signs of quality in the recent break, but lacked the creativity needed to set up the likes of Kane and Sterling.

Forwards

Jarrod Bowen – Airport lounge

Had a decent debut for England but was unable to shine too much in an out-of-form side. His involvement at Qatar largely depends on how bad certain other players are next season.

Marcus Rashford – At home

Was not included in the June squad and will have to have a great start to next campaign to warrant a place in Qatar.

Jadon Sancho – Airport lounge

Was also left at home but stands more of a chance than Rashford of featuring at the World Cup due to England’s lack of options on the right.

Phil Foden – On the plane

Hardly featured this month due to injury, but the Manchester City forward offers the drive and creativity England lacked vs the likes of Hungary and Italy.

Jack Grealish – On the plane

Grealish was fairly average for England this month, but he did show patches of quality, including coming off the bench vs Germany and setting up Kane for what should have been an equaliser if not for a great save from Manuel Neuer. It would be stupid to leave someone with his match-winning quality at home, even if he doesn’t start games.

Bukayo Saka – Airport lounge

Saka did look to be a nailed-on pick for the 2022 World Cup, but he wasn’t great this month and could lose his place if the likes of Sancho and Rashford start next season well.

Raheem Sterling – On the plane

Was one of England’s best players at Euro 2020 and is one of the few players outside of Kane who scores for the Three Lions on a regular basis.

Harry Kane – On the plane

Only a major injury would keep England’s captain and top-scorer from being at Qatar 2022.

Tammy Abraham – On the plane

Pressed well during his outing vs Italy and is expected to play back-up to Kane later this year barring a serious drop in form or a major resurgence from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, which seems unlikely.

How are Rams able to keep their championship roster together under cap – NFL Nation

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — It didn’t take much time after the Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl LVI for the front office trio of general manager Les Snead, COO Kevin Demoff and VP of football and business administration Tony Pastoors to turn to the task ahead: Keeping as much of this championship roster together as possible.

The first big move was to sign quarterback Matthew Stafford to a contract extension in March, tying him to the franchise through the 2026 season. And then last week, the Rams reworked defensive tackle Aaron Donald‘s contract to give him a big raise and signed wide receiver Cooper Kupp to a three-year contract extension that pairs him with Stafford for five more seasons.

After the Donald and Kupp deals, the Rams still have $7.6 million of cap space, according to Over the Cap.

And while those are the three long-term deals the Rams have done this offseason, there is plenty of talent alongside them. The Rams are now the only team in the NFL with two players — Stafford and Donald — who have an average salary at least $30 million per year in their current contracts. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who signed a five-year, $100 million contract extension in 2020, has a cap hit of $23.2 million this season. Wide receiver Allen Robinson II signed a three-year, $46.5 million contract this offseason.

So, how did they do it?

With a top-heavy roster containing so many star players, the Rams have to rely on their draft picks to add cheaper talent. For this to work, they have had to find young talent to fill in around the headliners. The Rams have managed despite not having a first-round draft pick since 2016. The Rams have 11 projected starters they’ve picked on the second or third day of the draft since 2017, led by Kupp (a third-rounder in 2017).

The recent contract extensions also helped the Rams’ cap space for this season. Kupp’s cap number for this season went down with the extension, from $18.3 to $17.8 million, according to OTC.

Extending Stafford in March also gave the Rams some cap flexibility this year.

While Stafford’s contract averages $40 million per season, his cap hit for 2022 is $13.5 million, which is 6.71% of the Rams’ salary cap and a sizable reduction from the $23 million cap hit he would have had before the extension. Stafford’s deal does jump to $20 million in 2023 and then $49.5 million the following season, which is when many people around the league are expecting the cap to explode with the potential of huge TV deals.

But it’s a bargain right now. By comparison, the Green Bay PackersAaron Rodgers has a cap hit of $28.5 million in 2022, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ is $37.8 million and the Buffalo BillsJosh Allen‘s $16.4 million.

According to OTC, the Rams are currently $2.5 million over the projected cap for 2023 and $7.8 million under for 2024, but those cap numbers won’t be set until after each preceding season and could drastically change.

One player the Rams did not retain was outside linebacker Von Miller, who signed a six-year, $120 million contract with the Buffalo Bills in free agency. The Rams also have not re-signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who tore the ACL in his left knee during the Super Bowl.

The Rams could re-sign Beckham, who attended head coach Sean McVay’s wedding earlier this month. McVay joked that Beckham knew the expectation was, “You come to the wedding, you’ve got to sign with the Rams.”

After he signed his contract, Donald said it was not his top priority to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Instead, he said, one of the “most important things for me was feeling that the pieces that we brought in were going to still be here.”

With the core tied together for at least the next three seasons, the Rams were able to extend their Super Bowl window.
