How the New England Patriots’ draft revealed Bill Belichick’s view of roster – NFL Nation

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The New England Patriots‘ rookie class has been widely panned by draft analysts, with some scouts and executives across the NFL also sharing their viewpoint with ESPN that first-round pick Cole Strange and second-rounder Tyquan Thornton went earlier than their teams had anticipated.

“I just don’t think they got value with their first two picks this year,” ESPN senior draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. wrote.

Fellow ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay echoed those thoughts, calling the Strange pick “eyebrow-raising” while noting he was his 77th-rated prospect overall.

Jordan Reid, another ESPN draft analyst, rated Strange a third-round pick.

While everyone expressed respect for longtime coach Bill Belichick, and acknowledged that he could ultimately have the last laugh, the Patriots’ early draft work — and how it didn’t align with the boards of draft analysts or other teams — became a topic of discussion in some NFL circles.

What does it really mean?

Not much now. After all, there is no shortage of examples of the Patriots being widely praised after a draft, only to later learn the class didn’t produce the expected results (here’s one random example from 2019 — an A for what now looks more like a D draft).

So much happens between when a player is selected and the three-year window that most around the NFL believe is the benchmark for when a draft can be most fairly analyzed.

How the players are coached and brought along in the system is critical. The mentality of how they take that coaching, and adjust to football as their full-time job, is equally important. Injuries are sometimes a factor.

So at this point, instead of a knee-jerk instant analysis of the Patriots’ draft class, perhaps a smarter approach is to de-emphasize the question of how they fared, and instead ask this: What did the Patriots’ draft approach say about how Bill Belichick views his team?

Here is one reporter’s take:

1. Speed deficient on offense: When you select the receiver (Thornton) and running back (Pierre Strong Jr.) who posted the fastest 40-yard dash times at the NFL combine in their respective position groups, it couldn’t be more obvious. More home run threats on offense were needed.

2. Changing of guard: One of the knocks on the selection of Strange was that the Patriots created the need by trading veteran guard Shaq Mason in March. That’s one way to look at it, but a more accurate assessment seems to be that Belichick didn’t view Mason’s performance as worthy of his salary and saw the draft as the best way to not only upgrade, but do so at a fraction of the cost. It didn’t have to be in the first round, but that’s the way it turned out.

3. Eyes on AFC East: The physical makeup and sticky-coverage/sudden playing style of third- and fourth-round cornerbacks Marcus Jones (5-foot-8, 174 pounds) and Jack Jones (5-foot-10, 171) seem like a direct response to what the Patriots face in the division — as dynamic Tyreek Hill joins Jaylen Waddle in Miami, and few Patriots could keep up with Bills pass-catchers Stefon Diggs, Isaiah McKenzie & Co., late last season — especially on deep crossing routes.

4. Still invested in young LBs: What to make of the Patriots passing on linebackers entirely? Belichick is not yet ready to give up on 2020 third-round pick Anfernee Jennings, and as director of player personnel Matt Groh said, 2021 fifth-round pick Cameron McGrone is like an “additional draft pick” after sitting out his rookie season while recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee suffered at Michigan. There’s also 2021 third-round pick Ronnie Perkins and 2020 second-rounder Josh Uche in the conversation.

5. White a wild card: Veteran running back James White said last week that he is still not cleared after having hip surgery last season. When the team drafts two running backs (Strong Jr. and Kevin Harris) despite already having Damien Harris, Rhamondre Stevenson and White on the roster, it reinforces that the team is protecting itself when it comes to White’s status.

6. Hedge on Harris’ future: Harris enters the final year of his contract in 2022, and while an extension can never be ruled out, loading up the depth chart behind him with two draft picks could foreshadow how Belichick will view any future contract talks. It marked the first time the Patriots selected two running backs in a draft since 2011 (Shane Vereen, Stevan Ridley).

Check out the best highlights that contributed to a stellar college career for Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe.

7. Stidham on notice: Selecting Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe in the fourth round (No. 137) shines a spotlight on Jarrett Stidham‘s development. The 2019 fourth-round pick has not seemed to ascend and now has a real battle to make the team as a backup to Mac Jones.

8. Belief in Groh: Belichick seems to have put a lot of faith in Groh, the first-year director of player personnel and former national scout, considering he veered away from power programs on a few picks. Strange played at Tennessee-Chattanooga, fourth-rounder Strong at South Dakota State and sixth-round pick Sam Roberts at Northwest Missouri State.

9. Inner circle: As shown on Patriots.com, the Patriots have probably the smallest draft room in the NFL, with Belichick, Groh, owners Robert and Jonathan Kraft, director of scouting Eliot Wolf, pro scouting director Steve Cargile, senior football advisor Matt Patricia, college scouting director Camren Williams, director of football/head coach administration Berj Najarian and director of research Richard Miller among the selected few from the organization spotted on Day 1 of the draft. This is the leadership group Belichick has entrusted in a year of transition, with former director of player personnel Dave Ziegler having departed to become Raiders general manager.

10. Return game: After a down year on special teams, one way to bring back the mojo is to select arguably the draft’s most dynamic punt returner in the third round (Marcus Jones). Groh also said the Patriots will consider what second-round burner Thornton might contribute as well (possibly on kickoff returns). Projecting picks onto the roster is a significant part of the draft, and this was a reminder how the Patriots continue to place a significant emphasis on fourth down.

Global private bank LGT to open Bitcoin and Ether trading

LGT Group, a top family-owned private banking and asset management group, is moving into cryptocurrency by launching Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) investments at LGT Bank in Liechtenstein.

Managing over $292 billion of assets, LGT Bank is preparing to debut digital asset custody and trading services in cooperation with Swiss cryptocurrency bank Seba, according to a joint announcement released on Wednesday.

LGT Bank will initially offer custody and trading services for BTC and ETH, while Seba supports more than 14 cryptocurrencies, including altcoins like Litecoin (LTC), Polkadot (DOT), Tezos (XTZ), the Tether (USDT) stablecoin and others.

According to the announcement, LGT’s crypto services will be fully integrated with traditional assets, enabling clients to easily exchange assets in their existing portfolios. The new offering will be initially available to selected client groups of LGT Bank. In order to access the new services, clients must be based in Liechtenstein or Switzerland and be classified as professional clients or be managed by an external asset manager.

Headquartered in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, LGT is one of the world’s largest wealth managers and investment companies. The banking giant traces its history back to 1920 and has a key presence in Switzerland in addition to more than 20 offices around the globe.

LGT Bank’s entrance into crypto aligns with the firm’s commitment to meet the increasing demand for investment opportunities, Liechtenstein’s LGT Bank CEO Roland Matt said. He added:

“The demand for cryptocurrencies has also increased among our clients in recent years. When developing our new offering, we paid particular attention to security while focusing on clear, reliable processes and procedures. They are central for dealing with this dynamic and still quite young asset class.”

The news further reaffirms the ongoing trend on global banks and asset managers increasingly adopting investment services for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. On Monday, Argentina’s largest and second-largest private banks, Banco Galicia and Brubank, announced plans to enable crypto purchases for clients.

As previously reported by Cointelegraph, some of the world’s most prominent banks made major moves into Bitcoin in 2021, with Bank of New York Mellon announcing plans to hold and transfer BTC as an asset manager on behalf of its clients in February. Other global banks like Argentina’s BBVA and U.S. Bank subsequently announced the launch of similar crypto investment services.

YouTube Go to Be Discontinued in August: Here’s What You Need to Know

YouTube Go is going to be shut down in August. The move was officially confirmed via a post on Google’s support page. The search giant has recommended that YouTube Go users should switch to the main YouTube app. They can also use the Web browser to access the website directly. The YouTube Go app was released in 2016 for users with low-end hardware or poor data connections. There are also several key features missing from the Go version like the “ability to comment, post, create content, and use Dark theme.”

According to the post shared by Google, the main YouTube has been optimised over the years to offer improved performance on entry-level smartphones and slow network connections. The company has also promised future updates to reduce data usage for users that only have access to limited data. All these improvements and planned updates for the main app have made the YouTube Go app redundant. Also, there have been vast improvements in the capabilities of low-end smartphones since 2016, when this app was initially launched. To recall, the app was built specifically for India from the ground up, but was also made available in other developing markets.

The YouTube Go app currently sits at over 500 million installs on the Google Play store. Notably, the app had not received a new update since October 2021, which might indicate that this app was on the back burner for some time.

Google has been constantly releasing updates and adding new features to the YouTube app. It recently widely released the Super Thanks, which allows users to tip content creators while watching their videos. This feature allows content creators to reduce their dependency on advertisements. Also, there was a recent report which suggested that YouTube would be receiving a dedicated Podcasts homepage. This rumoured update might also bring audio-only ads to the platform.

This $15 Vitamin C+ Retinol Serum Has 30,000+ 5-Star Reviews on Amazon

Wondering what actual Amazon shoppers who’ve tried this think? Check out the following reviews.

“This Serum REALLY works! I was amazed by the fast results and I feel way more confident with my face and skin. I even cut back on makeup because I don’t have blemishes and dark scars to cover anymore. Not to mention I’ve ALWAYS had extremely dry flakey skin, but this serum makes me glow. Even family and friends recognized the change and asked what I’m doing differently.”

“Awesome! I purchased this product in April and have waited this long to write a review because I wanted to give it time to work. I’m 38 and suffered from constant, cystic acne. My pores clog easy and I’m very oily. I am also bi-racial and scar very easily. Since April. I think I’ve had three pimples (all period related) that went away very quickly. That’s a miracle. I put this product on at night after my shower and made sure it dried well. I’m still good on product and probably won’t be reordering for another few weeks. I only use a small amount everyday. I haven’t been more pleased with something I bought on here or ANY store since…well never.”

“This stuff is so amazing, after just a couple of weeks of use I saw such a difference (and I’m 60 years old!). Honestly, I keep touching my face. It’s so smooth and soft and moisturized! But don’t take my word for it. My boyfriend regularly tells me how much he loves my skin, and that my skin is so great!!”

“Results in a little over a week. My skin has improved very much since I have started using this serum. A lot of my acne scars are already smoothed or in the process of smoothing out.”

“I never write reviews, so I mean what I say! This stuff has been so amazing the last 14 days. I had a huge breakout on my forehead that I couldn’t figure out. I tried changing my diet, being more consistent with my night skin routine, etc. and it seemed to keep getting more and more red and textured. Since the first day I started using this, I saw results! I can’t believe how soft and clear my skin is now. I don’t even feel the need for foundation today and that’s a huge sign for me that this works! Seems like it really balanced out my skin and my forehead is so much less agitated. Highly recommend you try! I have very dry skin that’s normally very sensitive so I’m really impressed by how much this improved it.”

Europe Is About to Ban Russian Oil: What Happens Next?

Russia’s decades-long dominance of Europe’s energy market is crumbling, and the biggest blow is expected this week as the European Union moves toward a ban on Russian oil.

On Wednesday, the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, proposed a complete import ban on Russian oil with crude phased out over six months and refined products stopped by the end of the year, subject to approval by the member states.

With this phased approach, “we maximize pressure on Russia, while at the same time minimizing collateral damage to us and our partners around the globe,” she said.

Oil prices rose after the announcement. Brent crude was up more than 3.7 percent for the day.

Analysts say it will be possible to sever Europe’s oil ties to Russia, but the effort will take time and may lead to shortages and higher prices for gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other products — a situation that could penalize consumers already struggling with inflation and, ultimately, derail the economic recovery from the pandemic.

It’s “going to be complicated,” said Richard Bronze, head of geopolitics at Energy Aspects, a research firm. “You have got a de-linking of two very intertwined parts of the global energy system,” he said, adding, “There are going to be disruptions and costs associated with that.”

“But policymakers are increasingly convinced it is necessary and better to do that relatively rapidly, both to try and reduce revenues for funding Russia and to reduce European exposure to Russian influence,” Mr. Bronze said.

The European Union’s aims are clear. With Russia continuing to wage war in Ukraine, Europe wants to deny President Vladimir V. Putin funds from sales of oil, usually his largest export earner and a cornerstone of the Russian economy. Russia’s oil sales to Europe are worth $310 million a day, estimates Florian Thaler, chief executive of OilX, an energy research firm.

The move against oil would be part of an effort to end Moscow’s ability to twist European arms over energy. In its latest attempt to do so last week, Russia cut off natural gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria. Russian oil may be an easier target than gas, analysts say. “The oil system can reconfigure itself,” said Oswald Clint, an analyst at Bernstein, a research firm, adding that oil was “a very deep, liquid and fungible market” served by thousands of tankers.

Still, for the European Union, cutting itself off from Russian oil will be a herculean task that may risk sowing division. About 25 percent of Europe’s crude oil comes from Russia, but there are wide differences in the level of reliance among countries, with the general rule being that nations geographically closer to Russia are more entangled in its energy web.

Britain, which is not a member of the European Union and has oil production from the North Sea, has said it will phase out Russian energy; Spain, Portugal and France import relatively low amounts of oil from Russia.

On the other hand, several nations, including Hungary, Slovakia, Finland and Bulgaria, usually import more than 75 percent of their oil from Russia and might struggle to replace it with alternative sources soon.

“It is physically impossible to operate Hungary and the Hungarian economy without crude oil from Russia,” Hungary’s foreign minister, Peter Szijjarto, said on Tuesday.

While worries focus on gas pipelines, huge volumes of oil also flow from Russian oil fields through the Druzhba pipeline (named after the Russian word for friendship), whose northern branch feeds Germany and Poland and southern line goes to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

Refineries along this route, including the PCK facility in Schwedt, near Berlin, “have been running on Russian crude for the last 50 years,” Mr. Thaler of OilX said. “You need to source a proxy for that on the international market.”

Mr. Thaler said Hungary and Slovakia could potentially receive more oil from tankers in the Adriatic Sea, via a pipeline that runs through Croatia, while the Czech Republic could be fed from a terminal in Trieste, Italy. Policymakers in Brussels may give Hungary and perhaps other countries long lead times to win their support.

Germany, on the other hand, and Poland now seem determined to end their dependence on Russian energy, and this change of heart in Germany seems to be key to European policy. Germany plans to bring oil through the eastern port of Rostock as well as from across the border in Poland, from the port of Gdansk.

The German government says it has been able to end contracts for Russian crude, with the exception of the Schwedt refinery and another in eastern Germany called Leuna, which together account for roughly 12 percent of the country’s imports from Russia.

“That means the embargo is already being implemented, step by step,” Robert Habeck, Germany’s economy minister, said on Monday.

While oil is spoken of as a single commodity, there are many types with different characteristics, and refineries are often configured to run certain grades of crude. Switching away from Russian oil may involve costs if the fuel can even be found, analysts say.

Zsolt Hernadi, the head of MOL, a large Hungarian oil company, recently said it could require up to four years and $700 million to recalibrate his company’s refineries in the event of an embargo on Russian oil.

Analysts say an embargo could trigger a costly competition for alternative sources of oil.

Viktor Katona, an oil expert at Kpler, which tracks energy flows, said that of the substitutes potentially available for Russian oil, only Saudi output was a good fit. So far the Saudis, who will lead an OPEC Plus meeting on Thursday, have shown little inclination to increase their output more than incrementally. Mr. Katona said Iranian oil might also work, but sanctions imposed by the United States continue to crimp Iran’s fuel sales. Oil from Venezuela, which is also crimped by sanctions, is often mentioned as a possible swap for Russian crude.

Strains are already showing up in the market for diesel, which is used by both ordinary drivers and truckers. Diesel is in short supply because European distributors are wary of buying refined products from Russia, which once supplied large volumes of the fuel to Europe. Diesel is selling for the equivalent of about $170 a barrel, well above the $107-a-barrel futures price of Brent crude, the international standard, and Mr. Katona expects the price to keep going up. At the pump, diesel prices in Britain are up more than 35 percent over the last 12 months, according to the RAC, a motorists’ club.

An embargo is “going to inflict tangible pain on the European refiner and, in consequence, on the European customer,” Mr. Katona said.

Analysts say the releases of oil from reserves announced by Washington and the Paris-based International Energy Agency, which are scheduled to provide more than a million barrels of extra oil a day over six months, have so far had more impact on the American than the European market.

For Germany, Europe’s largest economy, the toughest decision will be what to do about the refinery in Schwedt, which is majority-owned by Rosneft, the Russian national oil company, and holds smaller stakes in two other refineries in Germany. Another Russian company, Lukoil, also holds stakes in refineries in Europe, including one of Italy’s main refineries, ISAB, in Sicily.

“Those companies would have little incentive to run non-Russian crudes,” Mr. Bronze said.

The German economic ministry said it did not expect “a voluntary termination of supply relations with Russia” in Schwedt and has been exploring legal options, including whether a state takeover could be justified.

And then there is the question of whether an embargo on Russian oil for Europe will achieve the aim of cutting off the Kremlin’s revenues. So far, the pressure on Russia seems to be raising prices and, therefore, revenues. Rystad Energy, a consulting firm, projects that even though Russian oil production is likely to decline in 2022, the Russian government’s total income from the fuel is likely to be up around 45 percent, to $180 billion.

Russia is also finding homes for its oil in India and, to a lesser extent, Turkey, as buyers take advantage of substantial discounts. “It might be just a game of musical chairs,” Mr. Katona said.

Ape-themed airdrop phishing scams are on the rise, experts warn

Cybersecurity experts identified and disclosed the rising popularity of airdrop phishing among crypto and nonfungible token (NFT) scammers.

Airdrops serve as an essential marketing tool for crypto projects, which involves sending free cryptocurrency tokens or NFTs to promote awareness among investors. However, a new report released by Malwarebytes Labs highlighted an alarming rise in airdrop phishing attempts as scammers try to cash in on the hype around Yuga Labs’ BAYC Ape-related NFT collection.

Malwarebytes recorded that the most common airdrop phishing tactics involve the use of fraudulent websites portraying as one of the legitimate platforms, adding that “Apes are, of course, the hottest draw in town where Airdrop phishing is concerned.”

The report acknowledged the fraudsters’ rising interest in ape-themed phishing while citing the “variety of fake pages out there reflects this.”

A fake website offering Bull & APE NFT as bait. Source: Malwarebytes Labs

The above screenshot shows a phishing attempt wherein scammers created a site asking visitors to claim up to 10 Bull & Ape NFTs. However, similar to any other phishing website, when a user tries to claim the seemingly lucrative offer, it prompts for a variety of password/recovery phrases:

“Does this really sound like something you want to hand over your recovery phrase to?”

In addition, Malwarebytes also warns about the rise in the “connect your wallet” airdrop phish wherein Twitter accounts with massive followers pose as popular projects such as Moonbirds project offering NFT airdrops.

A scam account falsely portraying Moonbirds on Twitter. Source: Twitter

As the crypto community notices and calls out such scams, the fraudsters tend to turn off replies to their tweets to prevent being exposed. In this case, the official verified Moonbirds account warned about the imposters.

Malwarebytes’ advice resounds with the general security recommendations of not saying “yes” to everything a site asks for, concluding:

“If you start granting permissions, or signing transactions, you may find your wallet draining of funds.”

Related: ETH gas price surges as Yuga Labs cashes in $300M selling Otherside NFTs

As rightly pointed out in the Malwarebytes report, the hype around Yuga Labs’ NFTs is real. The latest launch of the Otherdeed NFTs, which saw each digital piece of land selling for 305 ApeCoin (APE), witnessed an instant sell-out.

As Cointelegraph reported, the sale resulted in an unprecedented but momentary spike in Ethereum (ETH) gas fees. Citing some of the issues related to using Ether during its NFT launch, Yuga Labs announced the need for ApeCoin to migrate to its own chain to scale properly.

Luka Modric on if Manchester City are Real Madrid’s toughest opponents

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has been speaking about Manchester City ahead of the pair’s next outing.

Man City and Real Madrid played out an enthralling first leg Champions League semi-final tie last week at the Etihad.

The home side controlled the clash and probably should have scored more than the four goals they managed on the day.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City betting tips: UEFA Champions League preview, predictions & odds

Real Madrid vs Manchester City live streaming: Watch UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg online

Madrid, meanwhile, were very much second best, but were still able to net three thanks to some moments of brilliance from Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema, as well as a mistake from Aymeric Laporte.

The pair are now set to do battle at the Bernabeu this coming Wednesday on the second leg.

As away goals no longer provide an advantage, City will fancy their chances heading into the Champions League semi-final second leg after picking up a 4-3 win in the first clash at the Etihad.

And whilst question marks remain over the fitness of Kyle Walker and John Stones ahead of the game, the Sky Blues will once again be able to call upon Joao Cancelo, after the Portuguese missed the previous meeting between the two European giants due to suspension.

Ahead of the game, Luka Modric has been discussing Manchester City.

The Croatian would be asked if the Sky Blues are the toughest team Madrid have faced and, whilst Los Blancos are yet to beat Pep’s City in three attempts, Modric refused to confirm if they were:

“I can’t tell you because we have faced many strong opponents like PSG and Chelsea,” Modric said. “I can say City is a very good team with good players.”

LeBron James: There’s no way Ja Morant should even have been in Most Improved Player talks

Photo: Memphis Grizzlies

Ja Morant went off for career-high 47 points as the Grizzlies tied the second round series against the Warriors by winning Game 2. His stellar performance received praise from LeBron James.

The Lakers superstar did not think that the 22-year-old point guard should have been in the Most Improved Player — the award that was just given to Morant — conversation because he is already a superstar.

“JA so damn tough!!!! There’s no way Ja should even have been in MIP talks. This guy is a flat out ⭐️ and always have been!! Real basketball 🧠s know. Not the majority of dweebs who don’t even watch basketball on those voting ballots,” the four-time NBA champion tweeted.
