Abbott Elementary’s Creator Won’t Write School Shooting Episode

Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson will not be writing a school shooting episode of the show.

After the May 24 shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas that killed 19 students and two teachers, Brunson said she was inundated with messages asking her to incorporate a school shooting into Abbott Elementary, the show she created and stars in about fictional Philadelphia elementary school.

“wild how many people have asked for a school shooting episode of the show I write,” Brunson tweeted on May 25. “people are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they’ve elected and are instead demanding ‘entertainment.’ I can’t ask ‘are yall ok’ anymore because the answer is ‘no.’

Abbott Elementary premiered in December 2021 and was renewed for a second season in March. Brunson plays Janine, a second-grade teacher at the school, with an ensemble featuring Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter and Sheryl Lee Ralph

In another tweet, Brunson encouraged those asking for her to write about a school shooting to instead “use that energy” toward elected officials who can provide change. She added, “I’m begging you.”

Patrick Mahomes driving hype train for newest weapon

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes added another layer of hype to the impressive highlight grab new receiver Justyn Ross made at OTAs.

Justyn Ross went from one of college football’s biggest talents to an undrafted free agent, largely because of a devastating injury that put his playing career in jeopardy.

Ross worked his way back from injury to compete for Clemson against the odds. He’s now in the first stage of proving he deserved to be selected in the draft by making a name for himself with the Chiefs.

He’s wasting no time either, producing a jaw-dropping highlight with a one-handed catch during OTAs.

Patrick Mahomes is hyped over Justyn Ross’s catch at OTAs

The catch was so impressive that it caught the attention of Patrick Mahomes.

“Craziest part about this was dude acted like this was normal after he caught it,” Mahomes tweeted.

Every year the crop of undrafted free agents produces a few diamonds in the rough and Ross has every chance of being one of them this year.

He starred as a freshman at Clemson in 2018 with 1,000 yards receiving. He had a stellar performance against Alabama in the national championship game as the Tigers routed Alabama.

After a strong sophomore campaign, Ross was considered one of the best receivers in the country heading into the 2020 season when it was discovered he had a congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine. He missed the campaign and had a long road to recovery before returning in 2021 to catch 47 passes for 524 yards.

Ross’s talent could make him the biggest UDFA pick-up of the bunch. OTAs are just the start, especially since Kansas City is rebuilding their receiving corps after trading away Tyreek Hill and letting several others go in free agency.

Big Brother’s Bayleigh and Swaggy C Announce Pregnancy

For Bayleigh Dayton and Swaggy C, a bundle of joy is on the way.

The couple announced they are expecting a child together in an Instagram post shared on May 25, nearly four years after Bayleigh suffered a miscarriage while inside the jury house on season 20 of Big Brother.

Swaggy C’s post, which was shared to both of their Instagram pages, touched on the joy of expecting a child with his love.

“To have a baby coming in GENERAL… is a blessing,” he wrote. “But to have a baby with my favorite person in the universe? It makes it even better.”

Later in his heartfelt message, he admitted that the pair had plans to keep their pregnancy news under wraps to protect their “peace.”

“Initially, Bayleigh and I were going to stay quiet until our baby was born,” he shared. “Not one word until birth. We recently just decided to reveal on her bday about 2 weeks ago.”

Roller Champion First Impressions: A Solid Start

Any multiplayer game that makes me push up my glasses and lean forward in my chair is right up my alley, and Roller Champions, the hyper-competitive roller derby, certainly appeals to that competitive sensibility. I split my sides as my team relentlessly tackled the enemy team in a highly toxic manner, fist pumped to zero onlookers in my living room as I heroically sunk a nail-biting shot, and devised a strategy with my team to pull off crazy stunts just for a laugh, and all of that was an absolute blast. But although I’ve only played for a short time as of now, I’m already a little concerned that the experience might already feel a little played out after the initial climb to learn the ropes has been overcome. Though it’s a solid start to what could be my next team-based competitive addiction, it also feels in danger of becoming repetitive rather quickly.

At its best, Roller Champions reminds me a lot of its pseudo-sport brethren, Rocket League, where a simple concept became endlessly entertaining as I honed my skills and pulled off trickier maneuvers. Should I try to tackle the ball carrier, or should I speed ahead and try to intercept the ball when they shoot for a point? Should I try dodging my pursuers, or should I throw the ball down the loop in hopes a teammate can recover it? Communicating with my squad and devising a strategy to dominate the competition became increasingly important as my opponents’ tactics evolved, and that’s exactly the kind of dynamic I want in this kind of fast, team-based contest.

But while it nails its core rollerblading mode, it’s also very one-note and lacking in variety. All three of the courses are near-identical oval arenas with most of the changes being entirely cosmetic that don’t impact gameplay at all. And although there’s quite a bit of strategy in finding ways to literally run circles around your opponents, I also found myself reaching a very high skill level really quickly, and that made things start to feel quite stale after only a short time playing. It’s not that skating around with a squad and smashing a ball through the goal isn’t fun, it’s just that there isn’t much to it in this 1.0 version. I wish there was a bit more meat on the bone, because I could see myself losing interest once every match feels like a carbon copy of the one prior.

I wish there was a bit more meat on the bone, because I could see myself losing interest once every match feels like a carbon copy of the one prior.

The good news is that there are some seasonal modes like 2v2 and “hot potato” coming with the first season that will likely mix things up a bit. Both modes are temporary playlists, but are poised to offer some unique experience that might help stave off the tedium I began to feel after a few hours of play. If developer Ubisoft Montreal can keep that content drip coming, then that would put Roller Champions in a great spot to remain relevant long after it’s launched. But as someone who’s put thousands of hours into live-service games, I know all too well how big of an “if” that is. That said, at least there are lots of cosmetics unlockables to chase through the season pass and daily store offerings, so there are certainly quite a few reasons to keep grinding and get my avatar looking even more epic.

Another thing that could go a long way to improving Roller Champions’ longevity is the ranked playlist, which pits players against one another according to their skill. The fact that cosmetics unlock as you reach greater and greater heights in the ranked ladder is a great incentive to assemble a squad and hone my skill until I reach the top of the leaderboard.

So far I’m really enjoying Roller Champions even in this early launch state, but I’m even more excited to see what it will become once the community gets extremely competitive and the developer starts adding more content.

Opinion | Trump Didn’t Get What He Wanted This Week

Compared with the elementary school shooting in Texas, everything else about this week will be a political footnote. But some of the footnotes are certainly interesting. If we want to pick a theme for Tuesday’s elections, it might be that Donald Trump’s influence isn’t nearly as strong as he thinks it is, and that he may be the only American voter whose chief preoccupation is revisiting the 2020 election on an hourly basis.

Getting over it is something Trump can’t abide. Consider the primary in Alabama for a Republican Senate candidate. Perhaps you remember — if you’re very, very, very into elections — that Trump began by backing Representative Mo Brooks, then changed his mind and unendorsed him? Cynics believed Trump had just decided Brooks was a loser, but it’s also possible the congressman had offended our former president by urging voters to “look forward.”

That’s the wrong direction to mention when you’re hanging out with the Trump camp.

“Mo Brooks of Alabama made a horrible mistake recently when he went ‘woke’ and stated, referring to the 2020 presidential election scam, ‘Put that behind you, put that behind you,’” Trump said as he retracted his endorsement.

The outcome of all this drama was that Brooks got less than a third of the vote, behind Katie Britt, the former chief of staff of retiring Senator Richard Shelby. Since Britt failed to get 50 percent, there will be a runoff. Winner will face Democratic nominee Will Boyd this fall.

One addendum — which you should really skip over if you’re feeling even modestly depressed: Both Britt and Brooks are in the gun camp as deep as humanly possible. Britt has ads in which she’s aiming a rifle and promising to “shoot straight.” The N.R.A., which endorsed Brooks, praised his efforts to protect “interstate transportation of firearms.” Those of us in states that are desperately trying to keep gun proliferation under control would appreciate it if he focused his energies on something else.

Trump’s biggest election night triumph may have been Herschel Walker, the former football player he backed for a Georgia Senate nomination. But Walker’s competition wasn’t exactly top-notch, and now he’ll be running against Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock, who will probably take note of a few items on Walker’s résumé that Trump overlooked. Including allegations of domestic violence, refusal to take part in debates, and the day on the campaign trail when Walker expressed doubt about the theory of evolution. (If it were true, Walker mused, “Why are there still apes? Think about it.”)

On the plus side, there was Walker’s eagerness to spend $200,000 entertaining people at Mar-a-Lago. Nothing, it appears, raises the former president’s enthusiasm for a candidate like a willingness to make Donald Trump wealthier.

Sony Expects to Make $300 Million Off PC Games This Year

Sony is telling its investors to prepare for a big PC gaming windfall in the coming year. Really big.

In a business segment briefing for shareholders today, one slide showed off Sony’s net sales from PC games thus far, highlighting how titles such as Horizon: Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and God of War had brought in $80 million in the last fiscal year (which ended on March 31, 2022).

But the gaming giant expects more to come, and is telling them to expect a whopping $300 million in net sales on PC in the coming fiscal year ending March 31, 2023.

That’s a massive jump, especially for a gaming hardware manufacturer that has only just in recent years dipped its toe into the PC space with real seriousness. What’s more, it’s not fully clear where that chunk of change is coming from. At the moment, Sony’s only announced plan for PC is Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which still doesn’t have a release date.

What’s most likely happening here is that Sony has high expectations of Bungie, with its acquisition of the Destiny 2 maker expected to close by the end of this year. With Bungie being privately held, we don’t have a good idea of what it brings in, though analyst Michael Pachter has speculated it’s around $200 million in revenue a year across all sources (including console, merchandise, and more).

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection — PlayStation Showcase 2021

But it’s likely Sony’s PC ambitions extend beyond just Bungie. A slide later in the presentation shows that Sony expects approximately 15% to 20% of its releases in the coming year to be on PC, with that percentage increasing to closer to 30% by the end of 2025. Plus, there’s its recent moves like its introduction of the PlayStation PC brand and seeming interest from many of PlayStation’s internal studios in bringing their games to the platform. So far, that interest is working out well for PC players, with God of War running reasonably well on machines. Let’s hope Uncharted runs similarly or better. Now give us Bloodborne?

EA Tells Employees It Won’t Speak Out on Abortion, Trans Rights

As other companies in the games industry speak out about abortion rights in the wake of the government’s recent decisions, Electronic Arts is telling employees it plans to stay silent.

According to a report by Kotaku, during a company meeting on May 24, multiple EA staff members questioned executives about a possible statement regarding these two issues. In response, they were told that the company wouldn’t announce a stance because “being an inclusive company means being inclusive of all those points of view.”

“These things are hard and they’re personal and we all have our own perspectives and sometimes we won’t speak, and that will be upsetting and I understand that, we really do,” Chief People Officer Mala Singh told employees during this meeting, according to the transcript obtained by Kotaku.

Despite the FIFA publisher’s refusal to make a public statement regarding the issues, EA’s corporate communications director Lacey Haines told Kotaku that the company is focusing on “making sure that people have access to the healthcare benefits we provide as a company, even if those aren’t available locally.”

EA also signed an open letter opposing Texas’ anti-trans bill in March.

In the wake of a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn historic abortion rights case Roe v. Wade, studios including Destiny 2 creator Bungie and Psychonauts creator Double Fine have publicly taken clear stances in favor of abortion rights in contrast to EA.

Like EA, however, Sony has declined to release any public statements about abortion rights. PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told employeesin an internal email to “respect differences of opinion” in response to discussion surrounding Roe V. Wade. PlayStation-owned Insomniac has reportedly pushed back internally and pledged a total of $50,000 to the Women’s Reproductive Rights Assistance Project, and while PlayStation is matching that total through PlayStation Cares, it is preventing internal studios like Insomniac from speaking publicly as well.

Nicole Goes on a Modern Date in The Courtship Finale Preview

Lady Nicole Remy is trading in her ballgowns for blue jeans.

Three suitors remain heading into the two-hour season finale of USA Network‘s The Courtship. Taking a break from the show’s Regency-era setting, suitor Christian Cones surprises Nicole with a modern-day date in E! News’ exclusive preview of tonight’s episode.

Entering a mini planetarium, Nicole is greeted by her man with open arms. “Welcome to our own little universe,” Christian tells her as they hug. His galactic picnic is complete with plenty of pillows, blankets and views of the sky…even though it’s fake.

Seeing each other for the first time in “normal clothes,” they gush over their contemporary outfits as they accidentally twin in matching leather jackets. It could be a coincidence, but it could also be good chemistry.

“You know what? You could rock the age-old dress. You can rock this leather jacket. You do it all,” says Christian. “I could absolutely get used to this.”

3 worst moves of the 2022 offseason

La’el Collins, Dallas Cowboys. Mandatory Credit: Matt Blewett-USA TODAY Sports

After winning the NFC East and disappointing in the playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys offseason has featured several moves that don’t inspire confidence.

On the heels of a 12-5 season that ultimately ended with a letdown in the playoffs, the hope among fans — and almost surely within the organization otherwise — was that the Dallas Cowboys were set to build upon the groundwork they laid with a healthy Dak Prescott, a talent-laden offense, and a drastically improved defense.

Unfortunately, the 2022 offseason hasn’t done much to further that optimism. Between the numerous key players that are no longer in the building and a draft class that’s fine but surely not great based on a gut reaction, the Cowboys’ offseason has been one of the most criticized in the league.

But as we are set to enter the summer months, let’s look back at the biggest missteps for the organization with the worst moves Dallas made in the 2022 offseason.

Cowboys worst moves of the 2022 offseason

3. Releasing La’el Collins and inadequately replacing him

Amid a number of cost-cutting moves that the Cowboys were forced to make throughout the offseason, one of them was releasing last year’s starting right tackle La’el Collins. He went on to eventually sign with the Cincinnati Bengals. As for Dallas, they’re set to move their backup who replaced Collins during a suspension last season, Terrence Steele, into the full-time starting role.

On the most basic level, Collins is just a superior player to Steele, even with the improvements that the latter made in the 2021 campaign. The front office has long mismanaged big contracts, which led to them feeling as if they had to part ways with Collins and effectively downgrade on the right bookend of the offensive line.

Assuming that Steele continues to improve, the two tackle spots should be fine for the club in the 2022 season. However, the issue arises with the fact that they now have inadequate depth at the position. Sure, the team drafted Tyler Smith out of Tulsa in the first round, but he’s slated to likely replace Connor Williams, who also left this offseason, at left guard.

Outside of Smith, the club has 2022 fifth-round pick Matt Waletzko and 2021 fourth-rounder Josh Ball as the backup tackles. For a team that has long been invested in running the ball and that surely needs to keep Dak Prescott healthy, it’s hard to not look at the shuffling on the O-line as a net negative, which starts with feeling compelled to release Collins.

Best signing, biggest flop & more

Chelsea’s season came to a stuttering and disappointing end with a scrappy 2-1 win over Watford, with on and off the pitch issues contributing to a thoroughly underwhelming campaign.

Despite this, there were still plenty of positives to take, and 101 takes a look at some of them, and some of the less positive moments, in our end of season round-up for the Blues.

Player of the season: Mason Mount

For the second season in a row, the award has to go to Chelsea’s own Mason Mount. The midfielder dropped off from his heights of last season, but still came up with 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League, as well as a goal and three assists in 6 FA Cup outings.

And, in a disappointing season for the Blues, the midfielder stood above the rest.

Young player of the season: Reece James

At 22 years old, Reece James is already arguably the best right-back in the Premier League, even if he was in and out of the Chelsea side through injury.

A key contributor to Tuchel’s back three, James was tried both as a wing-back and as a right centre-back and perhaps his importance was underlined most by his absence. The Blues looked toothless and struggled in all phases, which James certainly helped with.

Goal of the season: Mateo Kovacic vs Liverpool

Antonio Rudiger’s thunderbolt against Brentford was a very close second in this award, but there has always been a certain beauty to a well-struck volley, and Matteo Kovacic’s effort against Liverpool was no different.

With the Blues 2-0 down and heading into a tricky halftime team talk, a corner broke to the Croatian midfielder on the edge of the box, before he sent it back with interest, flying past Alisson and halving the deficit.

The response was instant too, with Christian Puliisic levelling the game in first-half stoppage time. It was Kova’s gorgeous strike that got the ball rolling, though.

Signing of the season: N/A

Chelsea only brought in one player in the summer and, as will be seen below, he was far from impressive.

Flop of the season: Romelu Lukaku

Where to begin with this signing? Brought in for big money, Lukaku’s homecoming quickly soured after an interview given to Italian media, before a goal drought and a period in the cold followed.

All told, the Belgian managed just 14 goals, 8 of those coming in the Premier League. It was well below what Chelsea thought that they were buying in July.

Did Chelsea meet expectations?

In short, no. Chelsea were expected to challenge for the Premier League title but ended the season a distant third, 19 points behind the eventual winners. Two cup final defeats on penalties will do nothing to ease the pain, especially when both went Liverpool’s way.

They won two trophies, in the form of the European Super Cup and the Club World Cup, but that will come as little consolation.

Issues on and off the pitch have made it a season that will live long in the memory of Blues fans, but that they would rather forget.

Where do Chelsea need to strengthen?

The defence is the biggest issue, with both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving for free and question marks over Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso beyond this summer.

Additionally, they may need a midfield addition depending on the future of Jorginho, and they would surely like to refresh their forward line for a third consecutive summer should they be able to arrange departures.

Chelsea betting odds, next game:
