Missing Pregnant Teen and Her Boyfriend Found Dead in San Antonio

The chief said police believed Soto and McManus had been dead for three or four days. Their car was spotted in the parking lot of an apartment complex in northwest San Antonio and it had been parked there for several days, McManus said. Someone who “came across the vehicle” alerted Soto’s family and they called police, he noted.

McManus also declined to go into detail when asked what made it a “complex” scene.

Soto’s mother, Gloria Cordova, said she last saw her daughter alive on the afternoon of Dec. 22, the Leon Valley Police Department told CBS News. Officers said they went to Soto’s apartment for a welfare check later that day and were unable to access the unit, but seeing no signs of forced entry or other trouble, they left.

Leon Valley PD issued a CLEAR Alert (like an Amber Alert for missing or abducted adults in Texas) for Soto on Christmas Day.

“Ms. Soto, who is pregnant and has passed her delivery date, has caused significant concern among her family members after missing an essential medical appointment,” the alert read. It also noted she might be in a gray 2013 Kia Optima with temporary Texas tags.

Soto and Guerra were found in the aforementioned Kia, according to McManus.

The 41-year-old sister of Nick Carter and the late Aaron Carter was found unresponsive in a bathroom on Dec. 23, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office told TMZ Dec. 27.

Police said first responders were sent to her Tampa, Fla., home in the morning and discovered her in the bathroom. Bobbie Jean was rushed to the hospital and sadly declared dead.

In June, she was arrested for allegedly possessing a controlled substance, and the sheriff’s office noted she was on probation at the time of her death. Bobbie Jean’s mom Jane Carter first confirmed her passing on Dec. 23, telling TMZ at the time, “I am in shock from learning of the sudden death of my daughter, Bobbie Jean, and I will need time to process the terrible reality of this happening for the third time.”

Man United’s Scott McTominay reveals details of chat with Steve Clarke that inspired his goalscoring form – Man United News And Transfer News

5

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has revealed that a conversation he held with Scotland manager Steve Clarke is partly responsible for his goalscoring form for both club and country.

This season, McTominay is United’s joint-top scorer alongside Rasmus Hojlund with six goals to his name.

McTominay was also prolific for Scotland during the EURO 2024 Qualifying campaign.

The player got a brace against Cyprus and Spain to set his national team on their way to qualifying for the tournament set to take place in Germany next year.

In an interview with FourFourTwo, McTominay divulged that there was a period during the campaign in which he doubted himself and wasn’t too happy with his situation at Old Trafford.

The Carrington academy graduate didn’t seem to be in Erik ten Hag’s plans and there were even suggestions in the summer that United were open to selling him.

McTominay attributed his change in fortunes to a chat he had with Steve Clarke.

“I was going through a bad patch with football, having not played as much at club level as I thought I might have. That frustration is normal and healthy, but a conversation with Steve Clarke around that time stuck in my head.”

“He just asked if I was OK. It sounds simple, but I don’t think anyone has asked me quite like that before. I told him that I was fine, and I genuinely thought I was, whereas he felt, with the way I was walking around and acting, that I wasn’t my normal, smiley self.”

“I thought that was interesting and it definitely planted a seed.”

McTominay added, “He said I should think about football the way I did as a child – to get back to enjoying it for the purest of reasons. Why did I start kicking a ball around in the first place?”

“I remember going back to my room and speaking to my parents and girlfriend about it. I thought he was bang on. In the next two games I scored four goals – it’s mad.”

“The manager made me feel so relaxed, because I knew he had my back. He isn’t the type to say much, because he doesn’t have to; what he does say is often impactful.”

The 27-year-old explained that Clarke deserves full credit as the momentum has really helped him become a far better player.

How Billie Lourd Keeps Mom Carrie Fisher’s Legacy Alive With Her Kids

The force will always be strong between these two.

On the seventh anniversary of Carrie Fisher‘s death, Billie Lourd shared a moving tribute to her late mother, detailing her grief journey and the ways in which she’s chosen to honor Carrie’s legacy since her passing.

“It has been 7 years since my mom died,” she captioned her Dec. 27 post, which featured a throwback photo of her a child on the beach with the Star Wars star. “Every anniversary brings a different iteration of my grief. Some infuse me with rage, some make me cry all day long, some make me feel dissociated and empty, some make me feel nothing, some make me feel guilty for feeling nothing, and some make me feel all of those things all at once.”

This year, however, the mom of two—who shares son Kingston, 3, and daughter Jackson, 1, with husband Austen Rydell—was greeted by a different feeling: gratitude.

“When I woke up I felt grateful – or griefull if you will,” the 31-year-old continued. “Grief has infused my life with a sense of appreciation I had never had before. It makes me soak up every moment of joy as if it were my last.”

Israeli minister Gantz says situation on Lebanon border ‘demands change’ | Israel-Palestine conflict News

Comments from the Israeli war cabinet member are the latest to hint at the possibility of an escalation with Hezbollah.

Senior Israeli minister Benny Gantz says the situation on the country’s border with Lebanon “must change”, hinting at the possibility of military escalation with the armed group Hezbollah.

Gantz, a member of Israel’s emergency war cabinet, told reporters on Wednesday the chance of a diplomatic solution to exchanges between Israel and armed groups in southern Lebanon is fast running out.

“The situation on Israel’s northern border demands change,” Gantz told a news conference.

“The stopwatch for a diplomatic solution is running out, if the world and the Lebanese government don’t act in order to prevent the firing on Israel’s northern residents, and to distance Hezbollah from the border, the [Israeli military] will do it.”

The remarks are the latest to raise concerns that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza could explode into a wider regional conflict, drawing in Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah.

Israel and Hezbollah, along with a handful of smaller armed groups that operate in southern Lebanon, have settled into a steady rhythm of tit-for-tat exchanges since the current round of fighting between Hamas and Israel started on October 7, when the group launched an attack on southern Israel that killed more than 1,100 people.

Since then, Israel has been relentlessly bombing Gaza in a “genocidal” campaign, killing more than 21,000 people, most of them women and children, and displacing nearly its entire 2.3 million residents.

The Israeli offensive in Gaza triggered tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, as intermittent exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah were reported in the deadliest clashes since the two sides fought a full-scale war in 2006.

Tens of thousands of people in Israel and Lebanon have also been displaced, and more than 150 people, most of them Hezbollah fighters, killed on the Lebanese side since the exchanges began, according to a tally by the AFP news agency. The figure includes 20 civilians, including three journalists, the agency said.

On Tuesday, a Hezbollah attack injured 11 people in northern Israel while an Israeli attack on Bint Jbeil killed three people, including one Hezbollah fighter.

“Israeli warplanes are currently targeting towns that are even very far from the border,” Al Jazeera correspondent Ali Hashem reported from Bint Jbeil.

“The fact is that this area is now becoming a complete warzone, it’s becoming very dangerous, very risky, to go around, with the fact that you’re always anticipating an Israeli drone,” he added.

Thus far, however, such exchanges have stopped short of a more serious confrontation that would come with a steep cost for both sides, as well as civilian populations who live in communities near the Israel-Lebanon border.

The limited nature of the fighting had eased initial concerns about a larger war. But in recent weeks, Israeli officials have suggested that they could take stronger actions against Hezbollah, even as Israel’s campaign in Gaza comes under growing scrutiny.

Speaking on Wednesday on a tour near the border, Israel’s Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said Israel may target Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a move that would almost certainly spark a larger conflict with the formidable armed group with strong links to Iran.

“We will operate to make the most of the diplomatic option,” Cohen said. “If it doesn’t work, all options are on the table.”

Opinion | Matt Damon, Fran Drescher and an Indian Soybean Farmer on 2024

What are your hopes for 2024? See how they compare with those of 11 people I put that question to. (Most of them replied by email. The people from Afghanistan and India spoke by phone.)

Fran Drescher, an actress and the president of SAG-AFTRA, which staged a 118-day strike against movie and television producers this year:

In 2024, I am looking forward to a sudden and essential collective human emotional growth spurt, whereby empathy becomes the main emotion that informs all behavior.

Andrew Marsh, the chief executive of Plug Power, a fuel cell supplier:

My hope is to see 2024 as the year we get serious about decarbonizing hard-to-abate heavy industrial manufacturing sectors. Building out a nascent U.S. hydrogen industry is essential to moving these industrial processes to carbon neutrality.

Uri Levine, an entrepreneur and a co-founder of Waze:

I want people to find a purpose in life. When you have a life purpose or figure out what your destiny is, your life becomes simpler, everything is clearer, and you’re happier, healthier and richer. You know what you have to do. The purpose becomes the north star to guide you. My purpose is to create value.

Jason Dube, a package truck driver from Poland, Maine:

As a 17-year Teamster at UPS, I’m incredibly proud of the historic contract we won in 2023. I hope our victory will spark real change for working people in 2024, including my fellow package delivery drivers at Amazon. Let’s make 2024 another year for working people.

Danielle Allen, a professor and the director of the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation at Harvard:

My hope for 2024 is that ballot initiatives in Idaho, Oregon, Colorado and Nevada that seek to end party primaries and deliver election systems that make our votes count will win. That would signal that we are on our way to the healthy democracy we deserve.

Matt Damon, an actor and a co-founder of Water.org and WaterEquity:

Water.org has changed more than 60 million lives with access to safe water or sanitation. My hope in the new year is that we continue to accelerate our impact so that millions more people living in poverty can experience the life-changing power of safe water.

Shakera Shams, who lost her job as a journalist for Afghan national television when the Taliban took over and is helping women artisans create products for export through Aseel, a tech start-up:

I really hope, and my biggest hope for 2024, is for schools and universities to be opened for all Afghan ladies and girls. Right now few people have any hope in their daily lives. (Translated from the Dari.)

Clifford Winston, a senior fellow in the Brookings Institution’s Economic Studies program:

My hope for 2024 is that the public soundly rejects Donald Trump’s effort to regain the presidency. He is truly a threat to capitalism and freedom. Examples are his support for trade protection, restrictions on high-skilled immigration, maintenance of the Jones Act and prohibitions on foreign airlines serving U.S. domestic routes, failure to privatize ports, airports and air traffic control and use of antitrust as retribution for his private-sector critics.

Nicole Gelinas, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor to City Journal:

I hope that in 2024, the Democrats (and, to a less likely extent, legacy pre-Trump Republicans) who wish to defeat Donald Trump belatedly realize that the former president is not the problem to overcome; they are. Voters care about the bipartisan failure to protect Americans from severe economic disruptions, the failure to control the border, the tolerance for crony capitalism and low-grade political corruption, the incoherent foreign policy that has led to America’s decline on the world stage. If you are talking about Trump rather than what makes so many people so desperate to send a message for change that they would vote for him, you are losing to Trump.

Martin Schmidt, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute:

The IBM Quantum System One installed on R.P.I.’s campus is a beautiful engineering marvel with a golden, chandelier-like structure suspended within a cryostatic chamber, designed to keep temperatures orders of magnitude colder than outer space in order to cool the 127-qubit processing chip and protect its fragile quantum states. My hope for 2024 — and beyond — is that the creativity of the young unleashes the full power of quantum computing to help us solve seemingly intractable problems in medicine, climate, energy, materials and other fields.

Rakesh Jaiswal, a soybean farmer in Madhya Pradesh, India:

For the past three, four years, soybeans are really getting spoiled. It either rains too much or too little. We can’t really say anything about the weather. I have a son. He is 11 years old. And I have one daughter. She’s 7 years old. I hope that they get better at all subjects, English, et cetera. My son’s teacher told him that if you have a laptop at home you can study, but my financial condition isn’t in a place for me to be able to give him one. (Translated from the Hindi.)

“Inflation” means an overall rise in the price level, but prices don’t rise uniformly. Some prices even fall. Take a look at this chart of what’s happened to prices of various items — some important, some less so — since the pandemic began in 2020. If some of the numbers look wrong to you, take it to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which records the prices of about 80,000 items a month, “representing a scientifically selected sample of the prices paid by consumers for goods and services purchased.”

“The very concept of ‘industry’ is an artificial categorization. Often the most important competition any business will face is from entrants who are not hamstrung by assumptions about what their ‘industry’ expects of them.”

— Rita McGrath, “Seeing Around Corners: How to Spot Inflection Points in Business Before They Happen” (2019)

Sixers could put off acquiring another star until the offseason

The Sixers might delay getting another star player until the offseason, as per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. During the “NBA on ESPN” show, Wojnarowski mentioned that Philadelphia is inclined to keep its cap space intact for the upcoming summer.

The plan is to then actively pursue a high-salary player through a trade or free agency. For the current season, the Sixers are leaning towards making a less flashy move instead.

Wojnarowski highlighted the Sixers’ mindset when they traded for James Harden with the Clippers.
