Austin Reaves on guarding Kevin Durant: “What am I supposed to do?!”

In the final preseason showdown between the Phoenix Suns and the Los Angeles Lakers (123-100), Kevin Durant showcased his scoring prowess, finishing with 21 points.

On the Lakers’ side, the veteran LeBron James led the charge with 19 points, followed by Anthony Davis with 15 points, and young guard Austin Reaves, who contributed 14 points.

During the game, Durant’s offensive skills were on full display, including a play where he scored over Reaves.

What caught everyone’s attention was Durant’s playful shout to Lakers assistant coach Jordan Ott, who had previously worked with him in Brooklyn. Durant’s message was clear: “Don’t have him guard me next week!” as revealed by Reaves during postgame press conference.

In response, Reaves, with a sense of humor, questioned the feasibility of guarding Durant effectively. “Bro, what am I supposed to do?! There’s nobody who’s done this. I don’t know how many years he’s been in the league.

“You can’t block it. You can’t really contest this. He leans back in his actual shooting motion he kicks his leg out a little bit, so if you really contest, it’s a foul. It’s a problem.”

Durant’s unique style, combining a high release, leaning back in his shooting motion, and occasionally kicking his leg out, presents a significant challenge for defenders.

Attempting to contest his shots often results in fouls, making it a tough task to defend one of the most prolific scorers in the league.

As the regular season approaches, guarding elite players like Durant will be a test for young talents like Reaves, who will continue to learn and adapt to the challenges of the NBA.
