In February 2022, WNBA star Brittney Griner, detained in Moscow on drug charges, felt desperate. Facing a potential 10-year prison sentence, she reached out to President Biden for help, as revealed in her memoir “Coming Home” (Penguin Random House).

“I’m terrified I might be here forever,” she wrote in a handwritten letter. “I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home.”

Hand-delivered on Independence Day 2022, the letter also referenced her father’s service in the US Marine Corps with two tours in Vietnam.
