Puerto Rico had to overcome a significant point disadvantage but managed to surpass the determined newcomer, South Sudan, in the opening match of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, securing a 101-96 victory in overtime in Group B. During the game, four Puerto Rican players achieved double-doubles.

A joint effort led Puerto Rico to triumph, with Tremont Waters playing a pivotal role throughout. He garnered 19 points, 10 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Additionally, Stephen Thompson (21 points and 13 rebounds), George Conditt (18 points and 11 rebounds), and Ismael Romero (16 points and 12 rebounds) secured double-doubles, contributing to the victory.

“We have a couple of things to work out – turnovers on my part,” Tremont Waters said. “I already apologised to the team. Being the guy with the ball most of the team, they continue to trust me.

“So I have to get better at that. But overall we did a great job staying together. The last month has taught about that. If we hadn’t learned it yet, we learned that tonight.”
