Elon Musk Announces X Premium, X Premium+ Access for Free, but There’s a Catch

Elon Musk has announced that X (formerly known as Twitter) will now offer features from X Premium and X Premium+ — the microblogging platform’s paid subscription — at no additional cost, to specific users on the platform. However, not all X users will be eligible, according to details shared by the company’s CEO on Thursday. Premium subscription plans on X reduce the number of ads on the timeline, while allowing users to access to premium features as well as Grok, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot created by xAI, the startup founded by Musk.

In a post on X, Musk said that all accounts on the platform that have “over 2,500 verified subscriber followers” will have access to features available with an X Premium subscription. In India, an X Premium subscription costs Rs. 650 a month (when subscribing from the website) while an annual subscription is priced at Rs. 6,800.

Meanwhile, the platform’s CEO also said that users who have over 5,000 verified subscriber followers would be granted access to features that are available with an X Premium+ subscription, that is currently priced at Rs. 1,300 a month (if you sign up from the web interface) or Rs. 13,600 for a year. All four subscription prices are considerably higher when signing up from the Android and iOS apps.

Musk didn’t provide a reason for granting access to X Premium and X Premium+ features for select users, but the decision comes on the heels of a report that revealed that fewer people were using the microblogging service, which was struggling to retain users. The platform has refuted these claims.

This means that you will need to have 2,500 followers who have paid for a Premium or Premium+ subscription to gain access to these features, which also include a blue verification check mark and the ability to monetise their posts. X shows fewer ads to Premium subscribers, while those who have a Premium+ subscription do not see any advertisements.

Both subscriptions offer features like the ability to edit or undo posts, increased character limit, post longer videos, background video playback, video downloads, and access to the Grok AI chatbot. Premium+ access also gives subscribers the ability to post articles. The subscriptions also allow users to customise the mobile app interface and hide likes and subscriptions.

X Introduces ‘Articles’ for Premium+ Users to Write and Share Long-Form Content

X, the microblogging platform previously known as Twitter, has now introduced a new feature that allows users to share long-form written content. However, this feature is not available to all users. The firm announced that this long-form content-creating feature called Articles can only be used by paid users. Only X Premium+ users or verified organisations can currently access this feature. The company has not yet confirmed if the feature will eventually roll out to all other non-paying users as well.

In a post on X, the firm announced that Articles will be available to X Premium+ and verified organisations from March 8. It will allow them to write and share long-form content with their followers. The Article composer can be found in the Articles section in the sidebar on the web version of X. Users can start creating their Article from there.

Several formatting options, like bold, italic, and strikethrough text, as well as bullet points and numbered lists, can be utilised to compose an Article. Users can also embed images, videos or even other X posts with an Article. An Engadget report claims that the limit for an article is 100,000 characters or about 15,000 words.

Like regular X posts, the Articles will appear on the users’ profile in a new Articles tab and on their followers’ timeline, once published. The Articles can also be distinguished from regular X posts due to a unique icon and layout.

Once published, users will also have the option to edit or delete an Article. For instance, to edit an already published Article, users need to navigate to the concerned Article or the Published timeline in the Article composer. They can then click on the three-dot menu > Edit Article > Confirm, which will unpublish it. After editing, the Article can be republished. To delete an Article, users will find the Delete option under the previously mentioned three-dot menu.

Elon Musk Announces ‘Grok’ AI Chatbot for X Premium+ Subscribers, to Compete With ChatGPT

Elon Musk has unveiled the first AI model developed by xAI, a startup created by the owner of the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. Dubbed ‘Grok‘, the new AI model is designed to compete with rival technology offered by ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. It will also offer a version of Musk’s humour regularly seen in his posts on X. The chatbot is currently being tested by a small number of users and will only be accessible to X Premium+ subscribers, according to the Tesla CEO.

In a blog post on Sunday, xAI announced that it was rolling out access to the Grok prototype to a “limited number of users” in the US ahead of a wider release. The startup has also revealed it will add support for new features and functionality over the coming months and users can join a waitlist to try out the new Grok chatbot on the xAI website. Grok will be available via X and a standalone app, according to Musk.

The AI startup has touted some of the Grok chatbot’s features, including the ability to access real-time information from X, and the ability to suggest questions. However, the company has also warned that Grok has a “rebellious streak” and will offer answers with “a bit of wit”. According to the firm, the chatbot was trained over a period of two months.

It runs on xAI’s new large language model (LLM), dubbed Grok-1. While development started four months ago, the startup says that the LLM has gone through several iterations and is currently capable of scoring 63.2 percent on the HumanEval coding task. It also scores 73 percent on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) dataset, according to the company.

There’s no word on when Grok will be available to all users, but Musk announced via X that access will be limited to paying subscribers. When Grok is released to the public, X Premium+ subscribers who pay $16 (roughly Rs. 1,300) a month will be able to use the chatbot via the microblogging platform.
