WhatsApp Passkey Support for iOS Spotted in Development, to Work on Phones Running iOS 17

WhatsApp is working on adding support for passkeys to iOS, according to a feature tracker. The popular messaging service owned by Meta is bringing support for passkeys — a passwordless authentication technology that allows you to log in with your biometrics — to WhatsApp for iOS. The passkeys feature was previously added to WhatsApp for Android, but it looks like the feature will soon be available on WhatsApp for iOS. Users who are running on the latest version of iOS should be able to access the feature with a future update.

Feature tracker WABetaInfo spotted a new passkey-related menu in the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS 2.24.2.73, which suggests that the support for the feature will come to iOS soon. The Android version of the app already allows users to set up a passkey that can be used to quickly log back into their account on the same device.

A passkey is a hardware-backed authentication mechanism designed by the FIDO Alliance along with major firms like Apple, Google, and Microsoft that uses cryptography on a user’s device for passwordless sign-ins that are authenticated with Touch ID or Face ID, while cutting the risks of phishing attacks. On Android, WhatsApp passkeys are stored securely in Google’s password manager — it is expected to use Apple’s Keychain system on iOS.

While the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS includes code for the new passkey menu, you can’t actually create one as the functionality hasn’t been enabled. WhatsApp will first roll out the feature to users on the beta testing channel (via TestFlight) before it brings passkey support to all users on the stable version of the app.

However, not all iOS users will have access to passkeys. While passkeys are supported on Android phones running Android 9 or newer, only iPhone models that are running on iOS 17 will support third party access to passkeys. This means that if you have an iPhone XR or newer that is updated to iOS 17, you will be able to use passkeys in the future to log back into your WhatsApp account with Face ID or Touch ID.

WhatsApp Could Soon Let You Listen to Video and Music Audio Together on Video Calls

WhatsApp rolled out screen-sharing functionality for video calls earlier this year. The long-awaited feature allows users to share screens during video calls just like Google Meet or Zoom. Now, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform is reportedly bringing additions to this functionality. WhatsApp could soon let you share music audio during a video call while sharing your screen. This feature was reportedly spotted in the WhatsApp beta for iOS version 23.25.10.72 which is available on the TestFlight app.

As per a report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the app is working on a new feature that will allow iPhone users to share their audio while sharing their screen during video calls. This will let users listen to video and music audio together when someone shares their screen in video calls. The ability to share video and music audio in real-time during a screen-sharing session is expected to increase the interactions on the platform — especially during presentations and virtual gatherings.

The new feature was spotted on the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iOS 23.25.10.72 that is available via the official TestFlight beta programme. The actual functionality and the feature are yet to be rolled out to users on the beta testing channel as it is still in development, according to the feature tracker.

The publication has included a preview of the share music audio feature that appears to be sourced by enabling hidden features that are still being worked on. WABetaInfo also states that the feature won’t work with WhatsApp voice calls, and it will also be unavailable on video calls where the video is disabled.

WhatsApp started to support screen sharing in video calls in August to compete with video-conferencing platforms. This functionality can be accessed by tapping the share icon. The company has also started allowing landscape mode in video calls to support this functionality.

WhatsApp Working on Improving Feature That Lets iOS Users Share Status Updates in Facebook Stories: Report

WhatsApp, the popular cross-platform instant messaging app owned by Meta, is reportedly working on a new feature for iOS that will improve the way to share WhatsApp statuses in Facebook stories. The service was recently spotted working on a new option that will allow users to share their status updates to Facebook stories without leaving the app. It will also give more control to users. This upcoming feature is currently under development and has been spotted in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.7.0.75 update available on the TestFlight app.

According to a recent report by feature tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a new option enabling users to share their status updates to Facebook stories without leaving WhatsApp. Also, it will let users decide whether they want to share their status in Facebook stories or not by enabling or disabling the feature in WhatsApp Status settings. The app will add the new functionality within the status privacy settings.

The tracker website has also shared a screengrab of the feature spotted in the WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.7.0.75 update. It shows an option to enable the ability to share status to Facebook stories, similar to Instagram. However, the feature will be disabled by default and users will have to enable it manually. Also, if users decide to not share their status updates on Facebook stories, they can disable the same at any time.

Currently, WhatsApp allows users to share their status on Facebook story by manually sharing the update each time they post something new. The new feature to share status updates to Facebook stories without leaving the app is under development and will be available in a future update of the app.

Recently, the platform was also spotted working on the ability to edit messages. According to the report, an edited message will appear with an ‘edited’ label, visible to all participants in a chat. WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.6.0.74 version on the TestFlight app now shows a dedicated alert for edited messages.

WhatsApp for Android Working on New UI, Could Introduce Botton-Placed Navigation Bar: Report

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned instant messaging platform, keeps adding new features to offer a better user experience. Now, the app has been spotted developing a new user interface for Android users. The upcoming UI will reportedly be similar to the UI on iOS, making it easier to switch from Android to iOS and vice versa. The update will bring a bottom navigation bar on the Android app. The latest development is spotted on WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.23.8.4 update.

According to a report by WhatsApp development tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a new user interface with a redesigned bottom bar for Android users. The report suggests that the new UI appears to be similar to WhatsApp for iOS. It will make it easier for users to switch from Android to iOS and vice versa. the new update will enable users to quickly access important features like chats, calls, communities, and status right from the bottom-placed navigation bar.

The update tracker website has also shared a screengrab of the upcoming UI where the bottom-placed navigation bar is shown to have four options — Chats, Communities, Status, and Calls. Currently, WhatsApp for Android and iOS has different user interfaces. The new feature of the bottom navigation bar is spotted in the WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.23.8.4 update.

Notably, there’s no word on the feature from the company. It is also unclear when the new UI will roll out to beta users for testing. It is expected to be released in a future update of the app.

Meanwhile, the instant messaging app has also been reported working on an ability to lock specific chats using a fingerprint or passcode for Android users. The feature will let users lock and hide their private chats from others by simply locking specific conversation windows. Also, media files including photos and videos sent in a locked chat won’t be saved in the phone’s gallery automatically.

WhatsApp Working on Edit Message Feature With Dedicated Alerts on iOS: Report

WhatsApp has long been reported to be working on an edit message feature for all versions of its application. Like with deleted messages, an edited message will appear with an ‘edited’ label, visible to all participants in a chat. Reports since last year have suggested that work on this particular feature has been under development by the Meta-owned social media platform. Reports have suggested the feature being developed for both Android and iOS-run iPhone users. A new report suggests that the edit message feature is closer to seeing the light of day on iOS than ever before.

According to a report by WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the platform is working on the edit message feature for iOS beta testers to be rolled out in a “future update of the app.” The report states that the WhatsApp for iOS 23.6.0.74 beta version on TestFlight app now shows a dedicated alert for edited messages.

A preview from the update cited in the report shows a dedicated alert that prompts all participants in a chat that a message has been edited. The company will likely roll out the feature once all versions of WhatsApp that are incompatible with this feature have expired, and people will have to upgrade to the most recent edition of the app that can edit messages and receive edited messages.

The report also verified previous claims that WhatsApp will allow users to edit messages within 15 minutes of sending them and once edited, the message will appear in the chat with an ‘edited’ label.

WhatsApp is also reportedly developing a dedicated Audio Chat feature, which will likely appear within a user’s conversation window. Although not much about its functionality is known yet, but since this was spotted on a WhatsApp for Android beta, it is likely that the platform is also working on an iOS counterpart.

The popular social media platform also recently introduced two new updates to its WhatsApp Groups feature. One of the updates will enable the admins of each group to decide who can join and another will help users to search for a particular group in the sea of many by allowing them to search for any contact’s name and able to see the groups they have in common.

WhatsApp Desktop Beta Working on Feature to Select Multiple Chats: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature that will let users manage their chats on its desktop app. The Meta-owned messaging service is testing the feature for a future update that will let them select multiple chats at once and perform certain actions while using the web version of the app. WhatsApp currently provides the ability to select multiple chats only on Android and iOS apps. Users are able to select multiple chats, mark them as read or unread, archive them or delete them with a single command.

According to a WABetaInfo report, WhatsApp for Desktop beta is working on a new feature to let users select multiple chats, for a future update. The report suggests that the feature will let users will be able to select multiple chats at once and mute or mark all of them as read or unread. With the new update, it will be easy to manage the chats on WhatsApp for desktop.

WABetaInfo has shared a screenshot of the new feature that shows a new option “Select chats” available in the drop-down menu. Notably, this feature is currently under development and there is no confirmation on the rollout date for the same.

Meanwhile, the instant messaging platform is also working on another feature, which will let users report any suspicious status update on PC or laptops on the Desktop app. Any status alleged to be violating the Terms of Service will then be reviewed. WhatsApp currently only provides the ability to report suspicious messages or spam messages to the company in order to stop the spread of malicious content on the platform.

With this new ability to report status update features, the instant messaging app will become even more secure. The reported status update will be end-to-end encrypted, as messages, voice calls, media, location sharing, calls, and status updates are all protected by end-to-end encryption. The feature is also expected to be rolled out to WhatsApp beta for Android and iOS in the future.

WhatsApp for iOS May Get Option to View Messages by Date: Report

WhatsApp is reportedly working on an upgraded search feature that would allow users to view messages sent on a particular date. The functionality is being tested on WhatsApp for iOS. The feature is said to be under development and its release is not known yet. It has not been released to beta testers yet, as per a report. The news comes a few days after it was reported that WhatsApp for iOS got a bug after an update. The bug automatically changed the mute duration from ‘1 week’ to ‘8 hours’.

As per a post by WABetainfo, a platform that tests WhatsApp beta builds for features before they are released to users, WhatsApp for iOS may soon get a new Search by date feature that would allow users to search a message of a particular date. This means you will be able to filter out results by dates. Currently, WhatsApp shows several of results after you type a name or number in the search box.

Reportedly, this feature was under development two years ago but the plan to roll it out to the masses was shelved. The folks at WABetainfo say that they spotted the feature after the WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.0.19.73 update from TestFlight was released. The platform said WhatsApp submitted a new update through the TestFlight beta Program, bringing the WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.19.0.73 version.

WABetaInfo shared a couple of screenshots that suggest a Calendar icon placed just above the keyboard. In order to use the option to search for a message of a specific date, one needs to tap on the Calendar icon on the WhatsApp for iPhone. A tap will open the calendar icon, and a date picker will appear to select any month, date, and year. As mentioned, the feature is still under development in this build and it should roll out to beta testers in the future.

The development comes two days after WhatsApp for iOS users faced an issue after updating their app to version 2.22.18.76. It was reported that a WhatsApp bug automatically changed the mute duration from ‘1 week’ to ‘8 hours’. However, no issue was faced when users chose the two other durations for muting chats: ‘8 hours’ and ‘Always’.

WhatsApp Working on In-App Surveys, Ability to Text Yourself From Linked Devices: Reports

WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new in-app survey chat feature that the Meta-owned platform plans to use for getting feedback on new features, products, and more. WhatsApp would supposedly send users a request for a secure chat while asking for feedback. As per the report, users will have the option to decline such requests from WhatsApp. In addition, another new feature is said to be in testing that would enable users to send messages to themselves from linked devices.

As per a report by WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, WhatsApp could be working on a secure in-app survey chat. Users are expected to be able to refuse invites for survey chats and even block WhatsApp from sending future surveys. WhatsApp will reportedly keep user feedback from this survey private.

The report claims that WhatsApp would use the survey chat for feedback purposes only. There is no information available on when this feature will be available to users. However, it is expected to be initially released to a very limited number of users.

In related news, WhatsApp could also be working on allowing users to send themselves messages between linked devices. This feature is expected to be available in future updates. It is believed to be an upgrade to the multi-device support that was released earlier this year.

Currently, WhatsApp shows the chat with a user’s number only on the primary device. It is not supported when using multiple devices. According to the feature tracker, users searching for contacts on WhatsApp for Desktop beta will be able to spot their names at the top of the list. In addition, this chat could show up when trying to log in from a new smartphone. This feature is expected to soon also be made available on WhatsApp for Android and iOS. It is said to be under development and could be made available at a later date.

WhatsApp to Stop Working on iPhone 5, iPhone 5c From October: Report

iPhone models running on iOS 10 or iOS 11 versions will soon stop supporting WhatsApp, according to a previous report. The changes will reportedly start taking effect on October 24. Users with older iPhones will have to upgrade their handsets to iOS 12 or newer versions to continue using WhatsApp. This step could force iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c users to upgrade to a newer iPhone model. Another report also suggests that it is not practical to update to a new iOS build on these iPhone models.

According to a WABetaInfo report from May, Apple will soon stop supporting WhatsApp on the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c. As per the report, WhatsApp may discontinue support for iOS 10 and iOS 11 by October 24.

iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c users might be facing a hardware upgrade as it is practically not possible to install an iOS update that will support WhatsApp. However, users with iPhone 5s or later models can update to iOS 12 and continue receiving WhatsApp support.

WhatsApp has updated its requirements on its FAQ page to reflect these changes. In order to keep the messaging platform running on their handsets, iPhone users will have to get an iOS 12 or newer update. In comparison, the app still supports devices running on Android 4.1.

This update should not be a problem for the majority of the Apple user base. Its statistics claim that 89 percent of iPhone users have moved to iOS 15. Furthermore, 82 percent of all Apple users have upgraded to iOS 15. Only 4 percent of users have iOS 13 or earlier versions installed.

To update your iPhone, go Settings > General > Software Upgrade and select the iOS version you want to install.
