Opera One, the AI-Powered Browser, Introduces AI Feature Drops Programme for Beta Testers

Opera One, the company’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered browser, is starting a new AI Features Drop programme, it announced on March 8. The programme will allow users who sign up to access the developer build of the browser and test out the new features before it becomes available for the general public. The AI features on Opera One are built natively as the company has its own AI engine called Composer AI. Recently, the company announced that it will release an iOS app for the browser in Europe following the enactment of the DMA guidelines.

As per a newsroom post by Opera, the AI Features Drop programme has been initiated to provide users with experimental features to test before a global release. Users will have to sign up for the programme to become eligible to receive the updates. Further, the updates will only be available in the developer build of the browser. The company stated that new features will be deployed on a bi-weekly basis.

Krystian Kolondra, EVP at Opera, said during the announcement, “AI is moving fast and so are we. We’ve started the AI Feature Drops Program to allow people to test our newest AI explorations that either will or won’t make it to the official version of Opera One. We are excited to let our most engaged users test and share their feedback and suggestions with us.”

The reason Opera needs a programme like this is because it is natively adding new AI features to the browser. Some other browsers, such as the Brave browser, only add a chatbot skin that is powered by existing third-party AI models and does not have any in-house AI features. Opera One has its Composer AI engine which powers the Aria chatbot and all other AI features on the app. It sits on the side panel and can assist users by answering queries, generating text for essays and emails, writing code, preparing itineraries and more. The chatbot is also connected to the internet and is capable of providing real-time information.

However, the foundation model behind Aria is not developed by the browser. It uses a GPT API that the company calls a “leading GPT-based solution”, which is then used to add new capabilities to the chatbot. Opera One was launched in April 2023 as an AI-centric browser redesign of the classic Opera browser.

Opera One AI-Powered Browser for iOS to Launch Soon in Europe, Following Apple’s DMA Move

Opera One, the latest version of the company’s browser infused with artificial intelligence (AI) features will soon make its way to the iOS devices in Europe, the company announced last week. The announcement came just a day after Apple revealed the changes it will make within iOS to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The changes will finally allow third-party browsers in the region to make the non-WebKit-based app available in the App Store. This has resulted in Opera announcing its redesigned browser with the inbuilt AI assistant Aria, Opera One for iPhone users in Europe.

Making the announcement, Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera, said, “As the leading European browser developer, we embrace the changes introduced through the DMA, aimed at fostering competition and offering users a more diverse selection of browsers on iOS. We intend to deliver on this with the AI-centric Opera One for iOS.” While the company did not disclose a launch date, it said the browser will be available in the months to come. Notably, Apple has a deadline of March 6 to comply with the DMA.

The latest version of the Opera browser called Opera One was launched last year with a redesigned interface and AI features. The main addition was Aria, an AI chatbot similar to Copilot on Microsoft Edge, that sits on the side panel and can assist users by answering queries, generating text for essays and emails, writing code, preparing itineraries and more. Aria is powered by Opera’s native Composer AI engine. The chatbot is also connected to the internet and is capable of providing real-time information.

Apple allowing non-WebKit-based browsers on iOS in Europe is said to be the biggest catalyst behind Opera’s decision. Earlier, Apple required all third-party browsers to use a WebKit code-base, the browser engine behind Safari, for their iOS version of the app. To comply with DMA, Apple will no longer have this requirement from browsers in the region.

Opera also highlighted that the announced browser choice screen for iOS was another key factor for the company to bring its flagship browser to the iPhone. Unlike earlier, where users had to dig deep into the settings to find an option to change the default browser, the new change will let users see the option upfront.

Google Chrome for Desktop Refreshes Browser Customisation Options With New Colours, Themes

Google has begun rolling out new personalisation features for its Chrome Web browser on desktop. The browser, that is estimated to be used by over 2.65 billion people from around the world, will now let community members experiment with more themes and colours. In order to suggest customisation options to the liking of the users, Chrome will track previous selections and show options accordingly. For now, these new customisation options are only reaching desktop users of Chrome.

The new side panel on Chrome browser is being loaded with multiple gradients of hues, that could change the overall appearance of the browser as per the preference of the user.

“You can test out different colours, themes and settings in real time by opening a new tab in Chrome and clicking the ‘Customise Chrome’ icon in the bottom right corner. A new side panel will open with the available customisation features. Here, you can experiment with different features and easily see how they will show up on your New Tab page as you make changes. Our new side panel remembers your customisation edits as you go,” the official blog post by Google read.

The existing range of background image options for the Chrome browser has also been expanded with newer options.

Along with ‘Landscape’ and ‘Seascapes’, Chrome users will have other categories sorted according to the location and heritage of the artists.

Native American Artists, LGBTQ Artists, Latino Artists Collection, and Black Artists Collection are among the new categories showing background image options for Chrome users.

Pictures clicked or inspired by more artists and communities are also in the pipeline to make it to Chrome’s customisation settings in the coming days.

Google has shared a glimpse of what Chrome users might want to be on a look out for on Twitter, making the official announcement.

“If you have trouble picking just one image, you can enjoy a rotating background by clicking on any theme collection and turning on the ‘Refresh daily’ toggle. Or, if you use Profiles to keep your work and personal accounts separate, try giving each Profile a distinct background and colour to differentiate between them,” the blog further noted.

The search engine giant has been loading up its Chrome browser with newer features, to deliver a more personalised experience its users around the world.

In March this year, for instance, Google updated Chrome for Android users with a new feature for the New Tab page that lets users quickly navigate to past search queries.

Google is also reportedly working on letting Android users clear their browsing history for the last 15 minutes.

In addition, Google Chrome is also working on introducing a mouse input shortcut that enables users to close tabs with a double-click.

Amazon User Survey on Web Browsers Hints at Development of New Browser Software: Report

Amazon might be working on a web browser, according to a recent poll conducted by the e-commerce giant. The company recently quizzed users on the possibility of them downloading and trying out a new web browser. The questionnaire being circulated by the tech giant suggests that it is considering the development of a new browser. Currently, Google Chrome is the most used browser in the world, with 65.84 percent of the market share, as per recent statistics.

A recent tweet by Consumer Reports senior reporter Nicholas De Leon (via Phone Arena) includes a screenshot of a survey by Amazon seeking details on web browser usage. The survey appears to have been disseminated via e-mail and did not appear on any of Amazon’s social networking profiles.

The company, in its survey introduction, said that participants will be “contributing to innovations that have the potential to improve the browsing experience for millions”. Meanwhile, the survey asks users questions about syncing data across devices, browser extensions, privacy and third-party tracking, and shopping related features.

In recent years, Amazon expanded its services from e-commerce services to now include a production company as well its own video and music streaming services. Amid the ongoing financial slowdown, Amazon decided to lay off another 9,000 employees from its cloud and advertising workforce earlier this week.

It is only natural, that it begins to look for more avenues to churn in capital to give its business a cushion of safety amid the ongoing economic turbulence. A web browser would elevate Amazon’s position against its competitors like Google and Microsoft, both of which also have their own browsers.

If Amazon does create a browser, it would be interesting to see whether the company would equip it with Web3 capabilities. The company is also reportedly working on launching an NFT initiative linked to its online shopping website.

Other browsers are already testing Web3 services on their platforms. Microsoft, for instance, is testing a non-custodial Ethereum-based digital wallet for its Edge browser. It will also come with an internal crypto exchange service offering.
