UIDAI Records Over 1 Crore Mobile Numbers Linked With Aadhaar in February

Over 1 crore mobile numbers were seeded in Aadhaar following requests from residents in the month of February, an official statement said on Friday.

The linking of mobile numbers with Aadhaar jumped 93 percent in February from 56.7 lakh registration in January, according to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

“Over 10.97 million mobile numbers were seeded in Aadhaar following requests from residents in the month of February 2023, a jump of more than 93 percent over the previous month,” the statement said.

Linking of Pan number with Aadhaar is considered to be one of the key factors that pushed the growth of seeding mobile numbers with Aadhaar.

Till date 90 crore Aadhaar holders are estimated to have linked their mobile numbers with their unique ID.

“The UIDAI has been encouraging residents to link their Aadhaar with mobile number for better and effective communication while availing welfare services and accessing multitude of voluntary services,” the statement said.

Nearly, 1700 Central and State social welfare direct benefit transfer (DBT) and good governance schemes have been notified for use of Aadhaar.

Aadhaar authentication transactions increased by 13 percent to 226.29 crore in February over 199.62 crore transactions executed in January.

UIDAI has recorded 9,255.57 crore Aadhaar authentication transactions cumulatively till February 2023.

“While a majority of the authentication transaction numbers were carried out by fingerprint, it is followed by demographic and OTP,” the statement said.

More than 26.79 crore e-KYC transactions were carried out in the month of February taking the cumulative count to 1,439.04 crore, according to UIDAI.

UIDAI Makes Aadhaar’s Online Document Update Facility Free Till June 14

The Unique Identification Authority of India has made document update facility online for Aadhaar free till June 14, an official statement said on Wednesday.

Earlier, residents were required to pay Rs. 25 to update their documents on the Aadhaar portal.

“The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has decided to allow residents to update documents in their Aadhaar online free of cost, a people-centric move that will benefit millions of residents…The free service is available for the next three months, i.e., March 15 to June 14, 2023,” the official statement said.

As per Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016, Aadhaar number holders may, on completion of every 10 years from the date of enrolment for Aadhaar, update their supporting documents in Aadhaar, at least once, by submitting proof of identity (POI) and proof of address (POA) documents, so as to ensure the continued accuracy of their information.

“It is important to note that this service is free only on myAadhaar portal and will continue to attract a fee of Rs. 50 at physical Aadhaar centres, as in the case earlier,” the statement said.

However, normal charges will apply in case a document is submitted to change demographic details (Name, Date of Birth, Address, etc).

Updated documents help in improved ease of living, better service delivery by the government and enhances Aadhaar authentication success rate.

“The UIDAI has been encouraging residents to upload Proof of Identity and Proof of Address (PoI/PoA) documents to revalidate their demographic details, especially if Aadhaar was issued 10 years back and never got updated. This will help in improved ease of living, better service delivery and enhances authentication success rate,” the statement said.

Nearly 1,200 government schemes and programmes, run by the central and state governments, are using Aadhaar-based identification for the delivery of services. Besides, several other services, including financial institutions like Banks, NBFCs, etc are also using Aadhaar to authenticate and onboard customers seamlessly.

Aadhaar Enrolment for Newborns With Birth Certificates Said to Be Expanded to All States Soon

Aadhaar enrolment for newborns along with birth certificates is expected to be available in all states in the next few months, expanding beyond 16 states currently offering the facility, government sources said. At present, 16 states have Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration. The process began more than one year ago, with various states getting added over time.

Work is on in remaining states and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) — the government agency that issues Aadhaar numbers — expects that over the next few months all states will be able to offer the facility, bringing added convenience to new parents.

For children up to 5 years, no biometrics is captured. Their UID is processed on the basis of demographic information and facial photograph linked with the UID of their parents. Hence, biometric update is required (ten fingers, iris and facial photograph) once the child turns 5 and 15.

More than 1,000 state and central government schemes today leverage Aadhaar for identification and authentication of beneficiaries, transfer of benefits, and ensuring de-duplication. Of these, nearly 650 schemes are of state governments and 315 central government-run schemes — all of which use Aadhaar ecosystem and its biometric authentication.

As many as 134 crore Aadhaars have been issued till date. Last year, updates and enrolments for this 12-digit biometric identifier added to nearly 20 crore. Of this, 4 crore were new enrolments, a number that includes newborn babies and children up to 18 years. Only 30 lakh were related to new adult enrolments.

The sources said the aim is now to ensure that at the time of birth along with the birth certificate, Aadhaar is issued. UIDAI is working with the Registrar General of India regarding the same. The process requires computerised system of birth registration, and such states that had full computerisation have been onboarded.

The full list of states with Aadhaar Linked Birth Registration was not immediately available.

Sources said that in 16 states whenever a birth certificate is issued, a message pings to the UIDAI system, following which enrolment ID number is generated. Aadhaar is generated as soon as details such as photo and address of the child is captured in the system. Birth Registrars, in many cases, are Aadhaar enrolment agents also, so they will be able to enrol for Aadhaar, sources said.

UIDAI to Prompt Aadhaar Card Holders to Update Biometrics Once Every 10 Years, Says Official

Aadhaar card holders will be encouraged by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to voluntarily update their biometric data every ten years. As per a report, officials have stated that the government body will push people to update their facial and fingerprint scans connected to their Aadhaar card over time. People aged above 70 years will reportedly be exempt from the prompt. Currently, children aged between five to 15 years are required to update their biometrics. Aadhaar enrolment of children aged below five years is carried out based on the facial image of the child, and biometric authentication of the parent or guardian.

Citing official sources, PTI reported that the UIDAI will encourage people to voluntarily update their biometrics and demographics data once in 10 years. This could drive people to update their Aadhaar over time. Aadhaar card holders above the age of 70 years will not be prompted by the government body.

Exempting a minor percentage of people in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Ladakh, Aadhaar custodian UIDAI has reportedly enrolled nearly all adults in India. Due to the NRC (National Register of Citizens) issue, Aadhaar enrolment started late in Meghalaya, as per the report, which states that remote areas are left to be covered in Nagaland and Ladakh.

Aadhaar saturation level among adult residents is now near universal and the overall saturation level is 93.65 percent, the official told PTI. As per the report, the total fresh enrolment in August was only 24.2 lakh.

At present, biometrics are not collected for Aadhaar enrolment of children up to the age of five. Instead, the UIDAI enrols younger children using a facial scan, and biometric authentication of the parent or guardian. However, children aged between five and 15 years are required to furnish their biometrics at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

Aadhaar Data of Farmers Exposed by Government’s PM Kisan Website, Security Researcher Reports

Aadhaar data of a large number of farmers was leaked by a government website designed for the welfare of the agriculture sector in India, a security researcher has reported. The website, called PM Kisan, allows the government to distribute grants to farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi programme. However, due to an issue, one of its parts was publicly exposing Aadhaar numbers of enrolled farmers. The website has registered over 110 million farmers since its launch in 2019.

Security researcher Atul Nair said in a post on Medium that a part of the PM Kisan website was leaking the Aadhaar number of its registered farmers.

“The website provides an endpoint, which returns information about the beneficiary. This endpoint was also sending Aadhaar numbers,” Nair told Gadgets 360.

The issue was first spotted by the researcher in late January and was reported by India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). Shortly after receiving the report, the nodal agency forwarded the details to the concerned authorities. They, however, apparently took some months to fix the exposure.

Nair wrote in his post that the issue was fixed in late May. He told Gadgets 360 that he had confirmed that the issue was no longer reproducible.

However, it is not confirmed whether an attacker was able to breach the data until it got fixed.

CERT-In appreciated the researcher for reporting the issue, though it did not explicitly confirm the fix or whether the data was not breached.

Gadgets 360 has reached out to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) — the developer and maintainer of the PM Kisan website. This article will be updated when the department responds.

Aadhaar numbers of individuals in the country are not of confidential nature, per the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) — the statutory authority that is mandated to issue the 12-digit uniquely identified numbers. Nevertheless, it does restrict users from sharing Aadhaar cards on public platforms.

This is notably not the first time when the Aadhaar data of individuals was exposed by a government website. In 2019, the Jharkhand government reportedly exposed the unique identification numbers of its thousands of workers.

A few days later, state-owned liquid petroleum gas (LPG) manufacturer Indane had also allegedly exposed Aadhaar details of millions of its consumers.
