Truecaller Web Interface With Unknown Number Lookup, SMS Messaging Support Launched

Truecaller for Web was launched by the company on Wednesday as a new way to access the platform when a user’s Android smartphone isn’t nearby. Users can now log on to the web interface and look up numbers, or message contacts via SMS or Truecaller chat. Once loaded, the Truecaller for Web interface will also show messages that are automatically categorised. It currently works with Android smartphones, and there’s no word from the company on when — or whether — iPhone support will arrive.

While the Swedish company previously allowed users to look up unknown numbers on its website after signing in, the newly announced Truecaller for Web interface is designed to bring more features from the Android app to the browser. After linking the web client with Truecaller on a smartphone, users can look up unknown numbers, even if their phone isn’t nearby, by typing or pasting them into the search bar.

Alerts for incoming calls will be displayed on a computer that is linked to Truecaller on an Android phone. Other services like Microsoft’s Phone Link app allows you to view incoming notifications (including phone calls) even when your phone isn’t nearby, albeit without the unknown number lookup functionality.

Users will be able to view and use their PC (or laptop) keyboard to reply to SMS and Truecaller chat messages on their computer, organised into three categories — Inbox, Promotions and Spam. Outgoing messages can also be marked as urgent from the web interface, according to the company. The web interface will also allow users to attach files as large as 100MB.

To access Truecaller for Web, users will need to have Truecaller installed on an Android smartphone and a modern web browser on Windows or macOS like Firefox, Google Chrome, or Microsoft Edge. Navigating to the Messages tab and tapping the three-dot menu > Messaging for Web > Link a device will let users can the QR code displayed on the website to log in to Truecaller for Web. The feature is only supported on Android smartphones, which means that iPhone owners won’t be able to access the same functionality.

Vi has announced its partnership with Truecaller to help users in identifying fraud calls and spam messages. With this collaboration,Truecaller’s Verified Business Caller ID solution has been integrated with Vi’s customer service and sales team to bring in a secure customer communication experience. This will also help users in identifying genuine calls from Vi customer service platform as they will carry a green caller ID, an unalterable brand name and logo, a verified business badge, a category tag, and the reason for the call.

Additionally, Truecaller’s Verified Business Solution display brand identity and context about business calls. “This feature has already benefited over 2000+ active businesses across India and other global markets,” said the company in its statement.

India is among one of the biggest markets for Truecaller. The company claims to have over 350 million active users. It has been downloaded more than a billion times since launch and has identified and blocked nearly 50 billion unwanted calls in 2021.

Last month, the company reintroduced support for call recording on the app for smartphones. The feature was previously only available on Android smartphones. However, it was discontinued after Google cracked down on apps using an API designed for accessibility features to record calls. However, now the service has been rolled out on both an iPhone as well as an Android smartphone.

Truecaller Launches Live Caller ID for iPhone Users: All Details

Truecaller today launched a new service for iPhone users in India called live caller ID. This function, as the name implies, reveals to the user, the identity of the caller on the screen. The Stockholm-based firm has around 38 million users. On Android phones, if users receive an unknown call from someone, Truecaller displays the caller’s identity on the calling screen immediately. Things function differently on the iPhone. When getting a call from an unknown number on an iOS device, users must activate Siri to learn the caller ID. They must say, ‘Hey Siri, Search Truecaller,’ and Siri will display the user’s live caller ID.

The Live Caller ID is a premium feature on the Truecaller app and iPhone users will need to buy a premium subscription to use this feature. In India, TrueCaller offers two subscription tiers — Premium and Gold Premium. An individual member’s premium subscription costs Rs. 529 per year or Rs. 179 for three months, whilst a Gold plan costs Rs. 5,000 per year.

The app has become one of the most popular among smartphone users. Nonetheless, the company has previously been criticised for the manner in which it obtains data for its caller ID service.

Truecaller data was allegedly “comprised of details which have been collected without consent,” according to a report by the Indian magazine The Caravan last year. The Swedish firm, on the other hand, refuted the charges, claiming that the research was defective and based on erroneous information.

According to a TechCrunch report, Nakul Kabra, Truecaller’s product director for iOS, the app has had limited experience with iOS devices due to how Apple works with external third-party caller ID apps.

Truecaller’s current call-identification framework is confined to a finite set of numbers kept in directories in Apple’s CallKit framework and chosen by Truecaller’s spam algorithm. Other numbers that aren’t saved locally, he says, will have to be found manually.

To provide the planned live caller ID experience, the system makes use of Apple’s Siri Shortcuts and App Intents. Users must first activate the Search Truecaller shortcut on their iPhone devices by selecting the Add to Siri option under the Premium menu. The individual will be prompted the first time the shortcut is used to consent for Truecaller to search the screenshots captured by the shortcut.
