Carl Banks calls for the end of personal attacks against Saquon Barkley

New York Giants Ring of Honoree and current radio analyst, Carl Banks, has had enough. He is calling for a cease-fire from Giant fans who have been lambasting Saquon Barkley since he signed on with the rival Philadelphia Eagles in free agency last week.

“Saquon Barkley has put this team on his back. He’s a New Yorker, once a Giant, always a Giant,” Banks said on the Bleav in Giants podcast. “And that fits him. And I hate the effing Eagles. I do.

“And I’m going to root for Saquon Barkley for 15 weeks. I’m going to wish him love and success for 15 weeks. The other two weeks, I hope he gets two yards. And if they see him in the third week, I hope he gets less yards than that.

“Other than that, the kid has been everything that you would want a star player to be within your organization and outside of your organization. And, you know, again, I’m not singling out all fans but some of the behavior, some of the rhetoric towards you.”

Barkley was not assigned the franchise tag this offseason, as he was last year, and became a free agent. He quickly inked a three-year deal with Philly worth a reported $37.5 million which added to the fans’ ire.

It was later learned the Giants did not make Barkley an offer nor a counteroffer once he became a free agent.

The Giants then moved on at running back, signing free agent Devin Singletary and angling towards a running back ‘by committee’ approach.

New York Giants great Tiki Barber fires back at ex-teammate Ryan Clark

In the continuing war of words between New York Giants legend Tiki Barber and former NFL defensive back Ryan Clark — who are now both veteran media voices — Barber has answered the recent criticism laid on him by Clark over the departure of Saquon Barkley.

Barber, in tongue-in-cheek fashion, said Barkley was dead to him after signing a free agent deal with the rival Philadelphia Eagles.

Clark, in a congratulatory social media post to Barkley, ripped Barber as a bad teammate during the two seasons he spent with him as a Giant in the early 2000s.

Barber thinks Clark is making himself “sound like a fool.”

“Wow, Ryan Clark. You are making blank up,” Tiki said on his WFAN radio show last week. “Because you don’t know me like that, dude.

“I didn’t even realize how long you were on the Giants. Your first year, you were a practice squad player, and you were on the defensive side of the ball. What is he talking about, that I didn’t embrace young players? Ask Brandon Jacobs if I embraced him. Ask Derrick Ward if I embraced him. Ask David Diehl, or Richie Seubert, or any of those guys on my side of the ball if I embraced them. What the hell is he talking about? It’s like he’s fitting a narrative. He’s acting like I’m still a player when it pertains to my comments on Saquon Barkley, and he’s kissing Saquon’s (expletive) to ingratiate himself with Saquon. His comments make no sense because he’s not talking about someone he knows well enough to talk about.

“I honestly don’t remember interacting with him as a player. . . I thought he was a decent player, went on and had an okay career, won a Super Bowl, I give him kudos. But now that he’s the big wig at ESPN, he thinks he can just take shots, and his word is gospel? That Michael Strahan and Shaun O’Hara aren’t still my friends? What are you talking about?”

Barber wasn’t the only WFAN host to rebut Clark last week. Morning show host Gregg Gianotti blasted Clark, calling him classless and a “D-Bag.”

Saquon Barkley opens up about his ‘whirlwind’ Giants exit

Saquon Barkley said his final goodbyes to Giants fans on Thursday night in a lengthy post on social media.

Hours after the running back’s introductory press conference took place in Philadelphia, where he’ll be playing with the Eagles for the next three years, Barkley expressed his gratitude to Giants fans in New York and New Jersey who “will forever hold a place in my heart.”

Barkley signed a three-year, $37.5 million deal with the Eagles on the first day of free agency and ended his six-year run with the Giants.

“The last three days have been a whirlwind of emotions, but I wanted to take a minute and acknowledge all the Giant fans that have supported me and my family over the last six years,” Barkley posted.

The former first-round pick and the team that drafted him were never able to come to terms on an extension and the Giants opted not to use the franchise tag on him like they had done last year, letting him hit the open market.

“When I was drafted here I wanted my impact off the field to rival the accomplishments we had on it, and I can only hope that I came close to doing that. I’m forever grateful to the Mara and Tisch family and the wonderful people working in the Giants organization. The fans in New York and New Jersey will forever hold a place in my heart.

“Ultimately the NFL is a business, and I hope that everyone can respect my decision.”

Barkley amassed 7,200 all-purpose yards and was named to two Pro Bowls during his time with the Giants, but the Giants had just one winning season during his tenure in the Big Apple.

Barkley had expressed regret over the way he left and that he never gave Giants fans a proper goodbye when he signed with the Eagles earlier this week.

“I don’t think I really handled it the right way on social media. I think I could’ve gave a proper goodbye,” he said during his introductory press conference.

NFL reviewing whether Eagles tampered with ex-Giant Saquon Barkley

The NFL is taking a look at whether the Philadelphia Eagles tampered with former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley before the start of free agency.

Per league rules, teams are permitted to enter into negotiations with agents and representatives of pending free agents during the two-day legal tampering period. However, teams cannot speak to players directly unless those players are self-represented.

The Eagles are accused of violating those rules.

During a recent press conference, Penn State head coach James Franklin, who is very close with Barkley, revealed that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman had spoken to Barkley directly.

“He said that was one of the first things that Howie said to him on the phone as part of his sales pitch,” Franklin said. “Not only the Philadelphia Eagles and that that but also the connection with Penn State and the fan base as well. So just a really cool opportunity.”

Although the Giants have declined to comment on the matter, the NFL will look into the potential tampering.

The Eagles, who signed Barkley to a three-year deal worth $37.7 million, have denied the allegations.

If the NFL deems the Eagles guilty of tampering, they could be fined and/or stripped of draft picks.

New York Giants fans can’t be mad at Saquon Barkley, says Justin Pugh

New York Giants free-agent offensive lineman Justin Pugh is telling Giant fans on social media to not blame running back Saquon Barkley for his departure to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Barkley, who did not receive a contract offer from the Giants in free agency, agreed to a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the rival Eagles on Monday.

Pugh says it’s just business.

The Giants did not elect to use the franchise tag on Barkley this year as they did in 2023. Instead, they allowed him to test the market and the Eagles swooped in and bowled him over with a deal worth well more than the Giants were willing to offer.

Barkley, as stated in the X post by Pugh, did indeed give everything he had for Big Blue in his six seasons after being selected No. 2 overall out of Penn State in the 2018 NFL draft.

It remains good business for NFL teams to not “overpay” running backs who are on their second or third contracts. Many teams are opting for a “running back by committee” approach to their rushing attacks, a strategy that has worked in places such as Kansas City and previously, Philadelphia.

Pugh, who will be 34 in August, is not likely to be re-signed by the Giants after returning to the team last season and starting 12 games after New York suffered another unusually high spate of injuries along the offensive line.

‘Legal tampering’ window begins Monday at noon

The wait for NFL free agency is over.

The “legal tampering” window will begin at noon on Monday and last until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, when the new league year officially begins.

Here’s a quick summary of the legal tampering period, also known as the open negotiating period:

From 12:00 p.m. ET on Monday, March 11 until 3:59:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 13, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents upon expiration of their 2023 player contracts at 4:00 p.m. ET on March 13.

The two-day negotiating period applies only to prospective unrestricted free agents. It does not apply to players who have received, or who may receive, a required tender applicable to the 2024 League Year (e.g., exclusive rights players, restricted free agents, franchise players or transition players).

Let the rumors fly.

The New York Giants have approximately $41 million in available salary cap space this year and are expected to attack the offensive line early in free agency.

Players to keep an eye out for include the New England Patriots’ Mike Onwenu, Jermaine Eluemunor of the Las Vegas Raiders, the Miami Dolphins’ Robert Hunt and Jonah Jackson of the Detroit Lions.

The Giants stand to lose two captains — running back Saquon Barkley and safety Xavier McKinney — as they chose not to use the franchise or transition tags on them last week.

Tiki Barber goes off on Saquon Barkley potentially joining Eagles

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley will be an unrestricted free agent come next Wednesday unless he and the team can agree to a new, long-term deal.

If a deal is not struck, Barkley will be eligible to sign with any team he chooses. Former Giant great Tiki Barber — now a top sports radio host at WFAN in New York — is urging Barkley to not sign with one of the Giants’ most hated rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Barber advised Barkley not to cross that “thick green line.”

“I still want him here,” Barber told his co-host, Evan Roberts, on Thursday.

“The last thing I want him to do is go anywhere else. But if he goes to Philadelphia, I’m not even saying his name. I might not say his name again.”

Barber said that he would address Barkley by his middle name (Rasul) if he signed with Philadelphia and also had the same warning about signing with the Dallas Cowboys.

Both the Eagles and Cowboys are expected to make offers to the top running backs in this year’s free agent class. Dallas appears to be moving off Tony Pollard and the Eagles are not expected to re-sign D’Andre Swift. Both players will also be free agents next week.

Meanwhile, the Eagles and Barkley reportedly have a “mutual interest.”

Eagles, Saquon Barkley share ‘mutual interest’ as free agency looms

The New York Giants opted against placing the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley for the second straight season, setting him up to test free agency for the first time in his career.

It’s a decision that may backfire on the Giants and general manager Joe Schoen, especially if he remains within the division.

Those fears could quickly become reality as the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in signing Barkley when free agency begins next week, and the interest is apparently mutual.

Some will argue that this is purely a negotiation tactic by Barkley but if he’s able to remain in the northeast and land a large contract, it would be the ideal situation for him. He’d also like to make the Giants pay for letting him walk.

Giants not tagging Saquon Barkley, who will become a free agent

The New York Giants will not place the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley, allowing him to test the free agent waters for the first time in his career.

Barkley is expected to become one of the top players available when the new league year begins on March 13.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen said earlier this offseason that he’d like to avoid using the franchise tag for the second consecutive season, but left the door open to tag Barkley ahead of the 2024 NFL Combine. However, after meeting with Barkley’s representatives, they opted to take a different path.

Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports that the Giants have not made an updated offer to Barkley since last July.

It seems the understanding was to let Barkley test the market and find out his true value after a relatively small gap on the Giants’ best offer of $23 million guaranteed could not be closed over the 69 weeks since the first offers were exchanged.

Schoen told reporters at the Combine that the value he placed Barkley last season remains the same.

“I think the world of Saquon and I still think he can play. So, my value for Saquon really hasn’t changed. Unfortunately, throughout the process, starting back in November of 2022, we weren’t able to come to an agreement in terms of where we both thought a deal made sense,” Schoen said.

The Giants and Barkley negotiated intensely last year but couldn’t bridge the gap over a remaining $1-$2 million, ultimately resulting in a brief holdout. The superstar back later signed a modified version of the franchise tag but failed to reach any of the added incentives throughout the season.
