Saquon Barkley still training diligently amid Giants contract standoff

For fans who might be worried that a possible holdout by New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley this summer could put a dent in his conditioning. . . Don’t be.

Barkley remains very much hard at work preparing for the season.

Barkley is ready to hit the field despite not being permitted in the Giants’ facility, as he does not have a contract. As demonstrated above he is not sitting at home eating junk food waiting for the phone to ring.

He’s busting it and has been all offseason.

That issue could be cleared up soon if Barkley’s reps and the Giants can agree on a new contract by the franchise player deadline, which is Monday at 4:00 p.m. ET.

If no agreement is reached, Barkley will likely be forced to play under the franchise tender price of $10.1 million this season. He could also hold out.

But does he look like a player who plans on sitting out this season?

New York Giants RB Saquon Barkley expanded his representation in June

The contract standoff between the New York Giants and star running back Saquon Barkley could be coming to a conclusion as the July 17 deadline looms.

That being said, Barkley has expanded his representation group in an effort to help seal the deal.

From Pro Football Talk:

Per NFLPA records, Barkley is currently represented by Kim Miale of Roc Nation and Ed Perry of CAA. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Perry was added to the negotiating team in the middle of June.

The change suggests that Barkley was not fully satisfied with the service he was getting. However, he was not so dissatisfied that he fired Roc Nation.

If Barkley and the Giants can’t come to an agreement on a new contract by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, Barkley’s options are limited. He will be only eligible to sign a one-year contract with Big Blue for the 2023 season — a deal that cannot be extended until after the Giants’ last regular season game.

For the Giants, it makes business sense for Barkley to play under the franchise tag tender price of $10.1 million this year but he is pushing back on that plan.

It appears the two sides aren’t far off on but neither side has conceded as of yet. If Barkley plays under the franchise both this year and next, he’ll garner $23.2 million — all guaranteed.

But the two-time Pro Bowler is reportedly seeking around $26 million over the next two seasons — a report he has refuted publicly. Still, it looks as if there’s room for compromise here but knowing how these things play out, that could come right down to the wire.

If no deal is struck by Monday, Barkley is expected to hold out of training camp. He will not be fined if chooses to do so.

Saquon Barkley’s Week 1 Giants availability in ‘serious question’

The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley remained locked in a contract stalemate and with the July 17 deadline for a new deal rapidly approaching, the situation is turning dire.

Barkley has made it clear that he prefers a long-term contract over the $10.1 million franchise tender which he has yet to sign, and previously indicated that he may consider skipping the season.

That has not changed as ESPN’s Dianna Russini now reports that Barkley’s Week 1 availability is in “serious question” if a new deal can not be reached.

It was previously reported that the Giants had an offer on the table last season that would’ve paid Barkley $12.5 million per, then sweetened the deal to $13 million per plus another $1 million in incentives. Barkley rejected both deals and the Giants later pulled their offer.

Whether or not Barkley will actually hold out remains to be seen, but at this very moment, he at least appears to be serious.

Execs list possible solutions for Saquon Barkley deal

The summer is rolling on and NFL training camps will open in approximately two-and-a-half weeks. For the New York Giants, all of their business has been settled in their eyes.

All except for a new contract for star running back Saquon Barkley.

Barkley is looking at playing under the franchise tag price of $10.1 million this season if a multi-year deal is not reached by July 17, which is eight days out from press time.

In a recent piece from Dan Graziano of ESPN, Barkley’s options are very limited, and he is not alone in the process.

Josh Jacobs of the Las Vegas Raiders — last year’s rushing champ — is also facing playing this season under the tag, as is Dallas’ Tony Pollard.

With the running back market taking a major dip this offseason, it appears the teams have the upper hand. Graziano asked a group of NFL scouts and executives what some possible outcomes would be to these dilemmas.

The most popular response was to “do nothing” and “just franchise both [Barkley and Jacobs] this year and, if they play well and stay healthy, franchise them again next year,” Graziano wrote.

The other options were to sign the players to fair-market deals, two-year deals, or to rescind the tag altogether and move on. Here’s more on the two-year plan from Graziano:

The collective bargaining agreement requires that a second franchise tag be 120% of the previous year’s salary, so tagging Jacobs or Barkley (or Pollard) again next year would cost $12.11 million. That means you’d be paying them each $22.2 million total over the next two years. (These numbers are the reason that you have to offer a two-year cash flow of at least $24 million or so on a long-term deal if you want the player to even consider it.)

This makes sense from a cold business perspective. But it’s worth noting that none of the executives we spoke to work for the Raiders or Giants, which means it’s easy for them to take the cold business perspective without fear of the consequences that could potentially come with unhappy star players. If Jacobs and Barkley have hope of getting something done with their teams in the next 10 days, it lies in the non-economic calculus. Their teams have to be in the frame of mind that it’s important to make them happy, regardless of a market designed to limit their value.

The two-year contract worth $26 million was once thought to be the solution to Barkley’s demands. It gives him some security and also pays him the $13 million per annum, which is more in line with his market value.

But Barkley and his representatives have rejected similar offers from the Giants over the past year and now as the two sides come back to the table, someone is going to have to acquiesce.

But it doesn’t appear as if the Giants will be the one to do so.

New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley working out with Deebo Samuel

The New York Giants will open training camp in just over three weeks but it remains unclear if running back Saquon Barkley will be present.

Despite some level of optimism that a long-term agreement can be reached, the Giants and Barkley remain deadlocked in negotiations. They have until July 11 to get a deal done or risk having talks tabled until after the season.

If no agreement is reached, Barkley will have to sign his one-year, $10.1 million franchise tender. Of course, he could also skip the season, which is something he’s left open as a possibility.

That end remains unlikely and Barkley certainly doesn’t seem like a player preparing to skip any meaningful time. He’s been training hard this offseason and that continued this week when he teamed up with San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Barkley had also previously been spotted working out with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and squatting nearly 600 pounds.

The best-case scenario for both sides would be to get a long-term deal done that satisfies each party but even if they don’t, Barkley seems like a player preparing to carry the load for the Giants in 2023.

ESPN ranks New York Giants’ skill position players among NFL’s worst

ESPN recently ranked NFL teams based on their skill position players. After evaluating each team’s wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends and analyzing their skillsets against various defenses, the New York Giants’ skill position players dropped in near the bottom of the list, ranking No. 27.

The analysis somewhat makes sense if we’re looking at talent alone. Saquon Barkley is by far the Giants’ most explosive and talented skill player. The problem with Barkley is his ability to stay healthy consistently. Even then, he can only carry them so far, as we witnessed last season.

How far can running back Saquon Barkley carry the Giants? He approached his 2018 rookie form and excelled last season, generating 114 rushing yards over expected behind an inconsistent offensive line. If this version of Barkley sticks around, the team will be thrilled, but counting on the former No. 2 overall pick to stay healthy for the second consecutive season is difficult. In between healthy campaigns in 2018 and 2022, he missed 21 games and was forced out of three others with various injuries. Matt Breida would be the first man up if Barkley missed time.

Bill Barnwell also discusses the youth at wide receiver, the huge dropoff in talent between Barkley and his backup, Matt Brieda, that Darren Waller needs to be a top talent but hasn’t shown it over the last few seasons, and how Parris Campbell isn’t a sure thing because he spent the early part of his career on the sidelines with various injuries.

Speaking of last season, let’s remember that Brian Daboll had minimal offensive weapons to use throughout all of 2022. He relied heavily on backups and replacements like Isaiah Hodgins and Richie James to make plays.

Unless Daboll can guarantee that Barkley, Campbell and Waller are healthy all season and live up to their potential, though, this team seems doomed to rely on replacement-level receivers far too often.

While correct in that the Giants have to rely on backups too often, what the author does not discuss is how the backups did their jobs pretty effectively. Plus, Barnwell only discusses the talent of the skill position players, he does not address the offense’s ability to play as a unit.

Talent will only get you so far in any sport. A team’s ability to play as a cohesive unit with a singular goal in mind is what separates the good teams from the great teams.

Last season, Daboll proved that he can work with the players he had on his roster. Things may have changed during the offseason, but his ability to coach has not. As long as Daboll has the trust of his players and players that buy into what he does, that is what gets the Giants a winning season.

New York Giants select QB Lamar Jackson in 2018 NFL re-draft

The New York Giants held the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and — depending on who you ask — fumbled it when they used it to take Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

Many Giants fans will dispute that, but when presented with a possible ‘re-draft’ scenario, would have done something different with the pick.

In Bleacher Report’s latest 2018 re-draft, analyst Gary Davenport sees the Giants selecting Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson at No. 2 overall.

This one is actually tough. Saquon Barkley has been a great player at times for the Giants over five seasons. Quarterback Daniel Jones, whom the Giants drafted sixth overall the following year, teamed with Barkley to lead the G-Men to the postseason in 2022.

Still, you just don’t pass on drafting an MVP quarterback like Lamar Jackson.

Since that magical season in 2019 when he rushed for a quarterback single-season record 1,206 yards and led the league with 36 touchdown passes, Jackson has been unable to duplicate those gaudy numbers. He has also missed substantial time in each of the past two seasons. But he’s the only quarterback in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back years and one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the league.

That Jackson’s No. 1 receiver in New York in 2018 would have been Odell Beckham Jr. is proof that time is a flat circle.

This is a tough call because both players have been beset by injuries in their careers and many would say neither is worth the second pick.

Part of Jackson’s lure is that he wasn’t taken that high (No. 32 overall by Baltimore) which added to his initial value. Taking him second overall back then would have been controversial and panned by the fans.

Travis Kelce says Giants’ Saquon Barkley should not skip season

The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley have until July 17 to reach an agreement on a long-term deal. If they don’t, negotiations can not resume until the end of the 2023 regular season.

If that scenario were to play out, Barkley would be forced to sign his one-year franchise tender for $10.1 million or sit out the season, which he’s left the door open to do.

“I think that’s a conversation, like you said, that’s a card I could play,” Barkley said earlier this month. “That comes up in conversation if something doesn’t get done by July 17. And we got a little bit of time in between there. So when that date comes up, then I’ll have to sit down with my team and my family and make decisions, see what we’re gonna do, what’s the game plan, what’s the next move.”

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce would strongly advise Barkley against sitting out the year.

“I mean, I think that’s where the team, unfortunately, has leverage. And the last guy I remember sitting out was Le’Veon Bell and he’s gone on record saying that he regrets that decision. He eventually got the guaranteed money in the contract that he wanted. He just got it after sitting out a year and missing that amount of form,” Kelce said on the New Heights Podcast.

“You just miss like that much money that year and you miss a year of your career. (And) the running back position? It’s shorter in terms of longevity and average career, it is a very taxing position. So I understand that he wants to get, you know, the money that he’s worth right now. But I hear you, man, sitting out over $10.1 million…”

If it were Kelce, potentially sitting out wouldn’t even come into play.

“I’m definitely playing,” he said. “Saquon, I hope you get every freaking dollar you’re worth brother and I hope that everything starts to become very, you know, truthful and . . . just a better atmosphere over there for you.”

The Giants and Barkley have reportedly resumed contract negotiations but that doesn’t mean a deal is guaranteed to get done. There are still plenty of hurdles to clear and time is ticking away.

New York Giants rise in team ‘triplets rankings’ from CBS Sports

A year ago, the New York Giants were listed at No. 28 in CBS Sports’ team triplets rankings. But after a solid finish in 2022 and a strong offseason, they’ve seen their stock rise.

CBS Sports now has the Giants ranked at No. 18 overall, a modest 10-spot improvement.

QB: Daniel Jones RB: Saquon Barkley TE: Darren Waller

Jones may have been the most improved player in the NFL last season, but most of that improvement was about limiting the downside of his play and not discovering the upside. New York took more off his plate and basically asked him to be a runner and short-passer and that was about it. What will things look like if and when the Giants ask him to do more? We’re going to find out over these next few years, and at least the team went out and got him a higher-quality pass-catcher in Waller to aid that development.

This ranking feels low for a group that has players that are considered top five in their respective positions in Barkley and Waller. Not to mention, Jones made massive strides in 2022 as he posted career-highs in passing yards (3,205), completion percentage (67.2), QBR (60.8), rushing yards (708), and rushing touchdowns (7).

Jones also got rid of the turnover bug, leading the league with the lowest interception percentage (1.1) while having career lows in fumbles (6) and interceptions (5).

The emergence of Jones is definitely a factor that boosted this core up 10 spots in the ranking but the addition of Waller feels underappreciated in this placement. The tight end has recorded 3,394 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns over the past four seasons, which is much more than any Jones receiving option has done during that span.

Not to mention, Waller fits perfectly for the intermediate run-pass option that the Giants run with Jones and Barkley, making this a tough cover for defenses.

Do not be surprised if this core is regarded as a top-10 triplet next offseason.

‘Talks backs on’ between New York Giants and RB Saquon Barkley

The New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley seemingly resumed contract negotiations following the 2023 NFL draft but at some point, things apparently fell silent again.

Now, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, talks are back on.

“First of all, the Giants and Saquon Barkley, he said recently at his (youth) camp, he said he’s not going to make a definitive declaration of what he is going to do in the 2023 season until we get into that deadline and to be sure there is still room here for a deal,” Rapoport said. “Talks are back on between the Giants and Saquon Barkley. Now, we’ll see if they can get to a point where he could become one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL.

“At the very least, Saquon Barkley is expected to be back with the Giants on a one-year fully guaranteed tag. It’s just a matter of whether he’s going to get the security that he wants. Time will tell on that one.”

As Rapoport alludes, Barkley previously left the door open to skip the entire season if the two sides can’t come to an agreement. That end always seemed unlikely and remains so as the July 17 extension deadline approaches.

Barkley has previously rejected a deal worth up to $14 million per season but that was presumably done because of a disagreement over guaranteed money.
