Threads App Sees Over 50 Million Users Sign Up Within a Day as Instagram’s Competition With Twitter Heats Up

Threads, the new “Twitter Killer” app from Meta that was launched on Thursday, now has 50 million users — just over 24 hours since the app was rolled out. The text-based microblogging service is closely tied to Meta’s popular photo and video sharing service, Instagram. While the brisk rise of Threads is impressive, it is worth noting that Meta is using its user base of over 2.35 billion active users on Instagram to get users to sign up for Threads. Meanwhile, rival Twitter has already begun to feel the heat, with the recently appointed CEO issuing a statement, while the service has reportedly threatened to sue Meta.

On Friday, The Verge’s Alex Heath stated in a Threads post that the app had surpassed 48 million user registrations, citing internal data from Meta. Another Threads user, Joe Scannell (Threads: @joe_scannel), posted a screenshot of a recent Threads sign-up number that showed the figure has now crossed the 50 million mark. As part of Meta’s push to get users to sign up and use the service, it displays a serial number on the Instagram profile of each user — indicating when they signed up for the service.

Threads is the top app on the App Store in India and other countries including the US

It’s worth noting that while Threads was launched on the App Store and Google Play store simultaneously on Thursday, the app isn’t available in every country. Meta hasn’t rolled out the service to users in the EU, presumably due to stringent privacy regulations in the region.

The app has risen to the top of app stores in multiple countries — in India, the top free apps on iOS are Threads, followed by WhatsApp and Instagram. The Threads app reportedly rose to the fifth position in the App Store in China, where Meta’s other apps are currently blocked — Threads is expected to meet the same fate.

As of Thursday, the Threads app had over 95 million posts and which had garnered a total of 190 million likes on the platform, The Verge reported. It appears that Elon Musk’s Twitter has begun to feel the heat. The platform has reportedly threatened Meta with legal action in a letter sent by Twitter’s lawyer Alex Spirt to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Meanwhile, Twitter’s new CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted on Thursday after the meteoric rise of the new Threads app, stating that the Twitter community was built by users and that it was “irreplaceable”. “We’re often imitated — but the Twitter community can never be duplicated,” she added.

Threads’ user base is expected to grow over the coming day, but the service currently lacks features that users are accustomed to on other platforms, such as the ability to see a chronological feed or the ability to send private messages (or DMs). Meanwhile, the company’s support documents state that you cannot delete your Threads account without deleting your Instagram account — showing how closely the two are linked.

Meta Planning Lower Bonus Payouts for Some Employees: Report

Facebook owner Meta Platforms is planning to lower bonus pays for some employees, and assess staff performance more frequently, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing an internal memo.

Employees of the social media giant, who get a rating of “met most expectations” in their 2023 year-end reviews, will receive a smaller percentage of bonus and restricted stock award due in March 2024, the WSJ report said.

The bonus multiplier for that grade has been cut to 65 percent from 85 percent earlier, WSJ said, adding that the company will also restart assessing staff performance twice a year.

“We are making changes to our performance process, taking into account learnings and feedback over the last year while optimising for the future. These changes are not related to workforce restructuring,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters, without giving any further details.

On March 14, the company announced that it would cut 10,000 jobs this year in a second round of layoffs, as part of restructuring that will see it scrap hiring plans for 5,000 openings, kill off lower-priority projects and “flatten” layers of middle management, as the industry braces for a deep economic downturn.

As per a recent report by Reuters, a veteran Meta advertising product executive will leave the company in May, amid a months-long pruning of projects and staff that Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg has dubbed the “year of efficiency.”

Dan Levy, currently the social media giant’s vice president of business messaging, said in a post to Meta’s internal social network on Monday that he wanted to focus on family after losing a child to leukemia. “I made this decision slowly (over the last 2+ years) and then all of a sudden,” he wrote.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed Levy’s departure and said business messaging would remain a strategic priority and area of investment for the company this year. Levy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Levy has been at Meta for 14 years. The business messaging project he heads has been flagged by Zuckerberg for growth potential, although he was replaced last year as overall head of ad and business products.

Meta to Lay Off More Than 11,000 Employees in One of Biggest US Job Cuts in 2022

Meta said on Wednesday it will let go of 13 percent of its workforce, or more than 11,000 employees, in one of the biggest tech layoffs this year as the Facebook parent battles soaring costs and a weak advertising market. The broad job cuts, the first in Meta’s 18-year history, follow thousands of layoffs at other major tech companies including Elon Musk-owned Twitter and Microsoft.

The pandemic boom that boosted tech companies and their valuations has turned into a bust this year in the face of decades-high inflation and rapidly rising interest rates.

“Not only has online commerce returned to prior trends, but the macroeconomic downturn, increased competition, and ads signal loss have caused our revenue to be much lower than I’d expected,” Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg said in a message to employees.

“I got this wrong, and I take responsibility for that.”

Zuckerberg stressed on the need to become more capital efficient and said the company would shift resources to “high priority growth areas” such as its AI discovery engine, ads, and business platforms, as well as its metaverse project.

Meta said it would pay 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks for every year of service as a part of the severance package and all remaining paid time off.

Employees will get cost of healthcare for six months and those impacted will receive their November 15 vesting, according to the company.

Meta said it also plans to cut discretionary spending and extend its hiring freeze through the first quarter.

The company’s shares, which have lost more than two-thirds of their value, were up about 3 percent in pre-market trading.

Facebook Follower Counter Drops for Several Users, Mark Zuckerberg’s Count Drops Below 10,000: Details

Several users of Meta’s Facebook are complaining losing majority of their followers on the social media platform due to unknown reasons. Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has lost over 119 million followers which has brought down his follower count to below 10,000.

Facebook created a tsunami that wiped away my almost 900,000 followers and left only 9000 something on the shore. I kind of like Facebook’s comedy,” exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen tweeted.

When contacted, a Meta spokesperson said, “We’re aware that some people are seeing inconsistent follower count on their Facebook profiles. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience.”

Meanwhile, Meta on Tuesday unveiled the Quest Pro, a virtual and mixed reality headset that is aimed at helping the company break into the higher-end market for extended reality computing devices. The company unveiled the device at its annual Meta Connect conference. Customers in the US will be able to purchase the device at $1,500 (roughly Rs. 1,23,400) on October 25, according to Meta.

The company has said that the newly announced Meta Quest Pro can also be used as a productivity device, in addition to the social and gaming-oriented features that its Quest devices are known for. Meta is hoping the device will be used by creative professionals, such as designers and architects.

While the new Meta Quest Pro will support the company’s own Horizon Worlds and Messenger features that are aimed at casual users, Meta announced virtual versions of Word, Outlook and Teams, Microsoft products that have traditionally been used by professional users on computers or smartphones, at Meta Connect.

Mark Zuckerberg posts video of sparring session with Khai Wu

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg can change his status to MMA sparring partner.

The Meta CEO posted a video of himself sparring with mixed martial artist Khai “The Shadow” Wu before the latter made his UFC debut with a loss by unanimous decision Saturday night against Joshua Dillon.

The 38-year-old Zuckerberg recently had stated an interest in MMA on a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

“I really like watching UFC … but I also like doing the sport,” Zuckerberg said. “It’s because I have a connection to it. Since COVID, I got super into surfing and foiling, and then really into MMA. I know a lot of people who do it.

“MMA is like the perfect thing. Because it’s like, if you stop paying attention for one second, you’re gonna end up on the bottom.”

Meta Partners With Qualcomm For Custom Virtual Reality Chips: Report

Meta is partnering with Qualcomm to build custom chips for its Quest virtual reality devices, the companies announced at a consumer electronics conference in Berlin on Friday. The engineering and product teams of both companies will work together to produce the chips and they will run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platforms. Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, is investing heavily in virtual and augmented reality as part of its efforts to build the “metaverse”. It is expected to unveil a pair of AR (augmented reality) glasses in 2024.

According to a report by Reuters, Meta and Qualcomm have struck an agreement to produce custom chipsets for Quest virtual reality devices, which would be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platforms.

They will be optimised specifically for the Quest’s system specifications, the report adds, quoting Meta spokesperson Tyler Yee as saying. The agreement reportedly covers only virtual reality devices — Meta is designing its own custom silicon chips to power the next generation of its augmented and virtual reality devices, he added.

“There could be situations where we use off-the-shelf silicon or work with industry partners on customizations, while also exploring our own novel silicon solutions. There could also be scenarios where we use both partner and custom solutions in the same product,” Yee told Reuters.

Meta’s virtual reality devices, including the latest Quest 2 headsets, use Qualcomm’s chips. The firm’s metaverse push also includes augmented reality glasses and goggles. Codenamed Project Nazare, the first generation of Meta’s AR glasses are expected to arrive in 2024.

Facebook Parent Meta Settles Cambridge Analytica Lawsuit; Terms of Agreement Undisclosed: Details

Facebook parent Meta has settled the lawsuit claiming that the social media platform has illegally shared user data with the research firm Cambridge Analytica. The settlement comes after it was revealed a month ago that Mark Zuckerberg, the Chief Executive Officer of Meta, would have to sit for a six hours long questioning by the plaintiff’s lawyers. The terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed as of now. Facebook users had sued the social media company in 2018.

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, American tech giant Meta has settled the lawsuit that claimed that Facebook illegally shared user data with the UK research firm Cambridge Analytica. However, the terms and conditions of the said agreement haven’t been disclosed yet. It was reported last month that Zuckerberg would have to sit in for a six hours questioning by the plaintiff’s lawyers.

To recall, Facebook users sued the platform in 2018 following revelations that Cambridge Analytica which was linked to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign for president gained access of about 87 million users.

The court filing a month ago had also indicated that the Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg will have to testify.

In the latest filing, lawyers representing both the parties asked the judge handling the suit to pause it in order to “facilitate the process of finalising a written settlement agreement”.

Instagram Makes It Easy for Users to Search Locations With Its New Map Feature

Instagram is adding a new map feature, which supposedly looks like a Google-inspired one, but with some modification. Instagram’s parent company Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared a post on Instagram Stories to reveal the new searchable map on the platform. The post shows that the new feature will let users discover popular local businesses near them and can also apply filters by categories. The updated function also allows users to look for restaurants, attractions and other hot spots by tapping location tags in posts on the Feed or through Stories.

According to an update shared by the CEO of Instagram parent company Meta on his post on Instagram Stories, the photo-video sharing social media platform is introducing a new searchable Map feature, which will now allow users to look for restaurants and other hot spots more conveniently. The upgradation, on the other hand, supposedly looks like the Google-inspired Maps. Users will be able to discover popular businesses around them and can also apply filters in different categories, as mentioned above.

The map on Instagram will now support hashtag searches and lets users explore by tapping tagged locations in the feed or Stories. It also allows them to save their searches in a collection and share locations with their friends on the platform.

At the same time, users can also type the name of a city or neighbourhood directly into the Explore page and see results on the map. Moreover, the location stickers on posts and Stories of Instagram users will add the content to make the search results visible to others on the platform. However, others will be able to view it as long as the location-sharing Instagram profile is public.

Besides this, Instagram recently introduced a payment feature that will allow users to buy from small businesses through direct messages. Through the new feature, users will be allowed to make purchases with various qualified small business on the social media platform without leaving the chat.
