Snapdragon X Elite Surfaces on Geekbench, Beats Apple’s M3 Chip in Multi-Core Test

Snapdragon X Elite — Qualcomm’s flagship computer chip that is expected to arrive on laptop from popular brands this year, has been spotted in a benchmark test. A listing for the purported Surface Laptop 6 on Geekbench suggests that Microsoft’s upcoming Surface laptop could beat Apple’s MacBook Pro models that are powered by its latest M3 chip, in one CPU test. According to recent reports, Microsoft could launch Surface laptops equipped with Snapdragon X Elite chips at a hardware event in May.

The Surface Laptop 6 was spotted by WCCFTech on Geekbench, without an official product name. It is listed with the title “OEMBR OEMBR Product Name MFG” and the details show that it is powered by a Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chipset at 4.01GHz, with 12 cores. It’s worth noting that there are three Snapdragon X Elite variants, and the one that was benchmarked was not the most powerful chip — that variant (XIE-84-100) boasts a 4.20GHz boost clock speed.

The purported Surface Laptop 6 with a Snapdragon X Elite chip has a single-core score of 2,714 points, and a multi-core score of 14,078 points. This puts the chip ahead of Apple’s 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro in Geekbench’s multi-core tests — the M3 MacBook Pro scored 3,103 and 12,065 points, respectively.

If these benchmark tests are genuine, then Apple’s M3 chip should be 13.37 percent faster than the Snapdragon X Elite on the rumoured Surface Laptop 6. Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s chip is shown to be 15.4 percent faster than the M3 MacBook Pro. After all, the Snapdragon processor has more cores (12) than Apple’s M3 chip (8).

It’s worth taking these benchmarks with a grain of salt, as Microsoft is yet to announce any plans to launch new Surface models with Snapdragon laptop chips. According to a recent report, Microsoft is said to be confident that the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 can beat the latest 3nm Apple Silicon processor. We can expect to learn more about these rumoured devices soon — Microsoft is tipped to introduce new Surface laptops powered by Snapdragon chips at its next hardware event in May.

Apple to Refresh 24-Inch iMac Next Year, Higher-End iMac With Mini-LED Display Coming in 2025: Ming-Chi Kuo

Apple debuted a host of M2-powered devices at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 in June, introducing a new 15-inch MacBook Air, a Mac Studio, and a Mac Pro. The company was earlier reported to be prepping to launch a new iMac, a 13-inch MacBook Air, and a MacBook Pro, all powered by the M3 chip, this October. Prominent Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, however, believes the 24-inch iMac refresh is not arriving this year.

TF Securities analyst Kuo, in a post on X, predicted that a 24-inch iMac refresh would arrive next year. Additionally, the analyst claimed that a higher-end iMac with a 32-inch mini-LED display would debut in 2025.

Predictably, Apple hasn’t yet provided a launch timeline for its M3-powered Macs. Kuo’s prediction of an M3-powered iMac launching in 2024 seems to be in line with earlier reports, too. Back in July, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had reported a delay in the M3 update of the company’s Mac lineup, noting that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and Mac Mini desktop updates powered by much-awaited M3 chip could be pushed to next year.

Specifically on iMac models, which have not seen a refresh in over two years since the company introduced the M1-powered 24-inch iMac in candy colours at its ‘Spring Loaded’ event in April 2021 — it was reported in March that the Cupertino, California based tech giant was working on two new iMac models, codenamed J433 and J434. Back then, Gurman had claimed the new iMac models were in the late stage of development but were unlikely to ship in the second half of 2023.

Last month, Kuo also claimed that M3-powered MacBook models would not be introduced by the end of this year.

Apple currently sells a 24-inch iMac model powered by its M1 chip, available in seven colours. The iMac is 11.5mm thin and features a 4.5K retina display with 500 nits of peak brightness. The desktop comes with six speakers and sports a 1080p web camera for video calls.

MacBook Models Powered by M3 Chipset Won’t Be Launched Until End of 2023: Ming-Chi Kuo

MacBook models powered by Apple’s rumoured M3 chipset won’t be launched by the company until the end of this year, according to details recently shared by Ming-Chi Kuo, a supply chain analyst with TF International Securities. The Cupertino-based iPhone maker was previously tipped by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman to introduce three new Mac computers in October, running on the next-generation Apple Silicon chipset, which is expected to bring notable improvements to both power and efficiency, and is said to be produced using TSMC’s 3nm process.

Last week, Kuo posted to X (formerly known as Twitter) that Apple was unlikely to launch new laptops powered with its yet-to-be-unveiled next-generation chips in 2023. “It seems that Apple will not launch new MacBook models (equipped with M3 series processors) before the end of this year,” Kuo wrote on the microblogging platform. 

This partially contradicts Gurman’s previous prediction that the transition to the new M3 chip would take place in October this year. However, Kuo’s claim specifically mentions that no M3-powered MacBook models would arrive this year. On the other hand, Gurman had predicted that the company was testing M3-based iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air, and Mac mini models.

While Apple doesn’t typically reveal or confirm its plans to launch a new product until it is announced on stage, Kuo’s claim suggests that only M3-powered MacBook models might be delayed to next year — while the rest of the products predicted by Gurman could still be unveiled by the company.

Earlier this year, the company announced a 15-inch MacBook Air model (Review) which is powered by the M2 chip. This could possibly explain the delay in the company’s plans to introduce a new MacBook model with a more powerful chip within a few months. 

Just like the rumoured A17 Bionic chip expected to debut on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone Pro Max on Tuesday at Apple’s ‘Wonderlust’ launch event, the purported M3 chip from Apple is expected to be produced by Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC on its 3nm process. The transition from TSMC’s 5nm process is expected to bring a big improvement in performance and efficiency for the next-generation chips that are expected to power Apple’s upcoming Mac computers.
