Apple Rolls Out iOS 17.2.1 and macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 Updates With Unspecified Bug Fixes: How to Download

Apple on Tuesday rolled out iOS 17.2.1 to eligible iPhone models along with unspecified bug fixes, ahead of the upcoming holiday season. The update has been released a week after the iPhone maker rolled out the iOS 17.2 update with the Journal app (Review), that was first announced at WWDC 2023. Notably, Apple hasn’t issued an update for iPadOS, but macOS Sonoma has been updated to version 14.2.1 with a fix for a screen sharing bug, according to the Cupertino company.

If you have an iPhone XS or newer model, you can now update to iOS 17.2.1, as per the company’s security releases website. Just like the iOS 17.1.1 and iOS 17.0.2 releases, the latest security update does not have any published CVE (common vulnerabilities and exposures) entries. Apple recommends all users should update to iOS 17.2.1, even though it has not specified which bugs it has fixed in its release notes.

You can install the 240MB update on your iPhone by opening the settings app and navigating to General > Software Update > Update Now. If you have allowed Apple to automatically download iOS updates, you might see an Install Now button that will restart your smartphone if its battery has enough charge.

Apple has also released macOS Sonoma 14.2.1 with bug fixes for recent Mac computers. According to details shared by Apple, the latest update for macOS Sonoma fixes a WindowServer (a process used by apps to communicate with the display on macOS) bug that caused users sharing their screen to unintentionally share incorrect content.

Last week, iOS 17.2 was rolled out to users with a new Journal app, support for capturing Spatial Video on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and new actions for the Action button that arrived on the company’s latest Pro models. The update also added support for the Qi2 wireless charging standard to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 series, according to Apple. 

The company has also rolled out iOS 17.3 beta 1 with new features to beta testers. Users who have opted to receive beta updates for iOS 17 can now try out features like Apple’s new Stolen Device Protection feature that mandates the use of Touch ID or Face ID before making account related changes on an iPhone after it is stolen. Collaborative playlists on Apple Music — another feature announced months ago at WWDC 2023, are finally making their way to iOS 17.3.

iOS 17.1 Update Includes Fix for Purported Screen Burn-in Bug, Fixes Significant Location Privacy Bug: Report

iOS 17.1 is expected to arrive next week as the first notable update since iOS 17 was rolled out to users in September. The iPhone maker has also rolled out the release candidate for the update to beta testers, ahead of the release. Aside from new features coming to Apple’s mobile operating system, the company is also introducing fixes for two issues that were present on iOS 17 and are affecting customers. An image retention bug that affected some iPhone models has reportedly been resolved, while Apple’s default iOS keyboard will also be much snappier after the update.

MacRumors reports that the iOS 17.1 update will fix a bug that “may cause display image persistence,” citing the feature notes for the release candidate (RC) for the next software update that is now available to test via the public beta channel. The company is expected to roll out the iOS 17.1 update to eligible iPhone models on October 24.

Users have reported screen burn-in issues on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models — on various platforms, including Apple’s forums and Reddit — weeks after the phones were launched. At the time, the company acknowledged that there was a bug that could allow the iPhone 15 Pro models — that are equipped with Apple’s latest A17 Pro chip — to get warm, while some apps like Uber and Instagram, that were not optimised for the new chip and iOS 17, could exacerbate the issue. These issues have reportedly been resolved with the recently released iOS 17.0.3 update.

iOS 17 Modifies Privacy Settings on iPhones After Update? Apple Reportedly Investigating User Claims

iOS 17 was rolled out to users globally last week, bringing noteworthy changes to Apple’s operating system for recent iPhone models. However, the Cupertino company is reportedly investigating claims made by users that the update to iOS 17 reset some of the privacy settings at the operating system level. According to security researchers, the two settings on iOS 17 that are claimed to be affected by the update could affect users’ privacy as they contain information about a user’s location.

Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that it was investigating an issue flagged by two cybersecurity researchers known as Mysk on X (formerly Twitter) related to the iOS 17 update. According to Mysk, some users have reported that the iOS 17 update enables the setting for Significant Locations and iPhone Analytics in the Settings app when they were previously turned off on iOS 16.

In a post on X, Mysk explained that both Significant Locations and iPhone analytics keep a record of a user’s location information. The former is stored on a user’s smartphone and synced between devices using end-to-end encryption, which means Apple cannot access the information. iPhone Analytics, on the other hand, creates analytics reports shared with Apple that could contain location information, even if anonymised.

Aside from some users replying to Mysk’s post on X stating that the settings were enabled on their iPhone, Gadgets 360 was able to confirm that both settings that were previously disabled on iOS 16 appear to have been enabled after the update to iOS 17.

It is worth noting that both these settings can be manually disabled once again by opening the iOS Settings app and tapping on Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Turn off Significant Locations and iPhone Analytics.

iOS 17 Update Rolling Out Alongside iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10 and tvOS 17: Check Features

iOS 17 is now rolling out to eligible iPhone models globally — including India. The company is also rolling out additional software updates including macOS Sonoma, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17 and watchOS 10 for compatible devices. These updates will add a few new features while improving several existing apps and services on Apple’s currently supported devices. If you are looking for the new Journal app and the collaborative playlists for Apple Music — both features that were revealed at WWDC 2023 — you’ll need to wait for a future update as they are not part of iOS 17.  Here are some of the best features coming to iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma that you should try out after installing the update.

Contact Posters and Live Voicemail 

While most elements of the user interface on iOS 17 are quite similar to iOS 16, the Phone app is getting a major revamp in the form of Contact Posters. This feature allows users to set their own poster and a profile photo that are shared with other people in their contacts. These can include full length images or Memoji, and customisable fonts with large text. In select regions, users will also see real-time transcription for Live Voicemail that is processed on-device, according to Apple.

NameDrop and AirDrop

iOS 17 will improve the company’s proprietary wireless sharing mechanism, AirDrop. You can simply bring two devices together to share a file, start a SharePlay session, or play a game together. In addition to bringing your phone close to another user to share different types of data, you can also use a new feature called NameDrop that will allow you to share contact information — including your Contact Poster — with another user. 

StandBy mode

While Apple’s smartphones have supported wireless charging since the iPhone 8, the company is finally adding support for a way to show useful information while its handsets are charging. After updating your iPhone to iOS 17, you will be able to see Live Activities, notifications, widgets, and Siri from your smartphone display, while it is in a horizontal position — the feature will work with both wired and wireless chargers.

Safari Profiles and Private Browsing Lock

Apple’s web browser is gaining a few new tricks with the latest iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma update. Private Browsing tabs will be locked behind Face ID or Touch ID, which means unauthorised users won’t be able to gain access without your consent. Safari is also gaining support for multiple profiles that will allow you to separate their cookies, bookmarks, and browsing history and switch across them for work and personal use. Competing browsers like Chrome and Firefox have supported profiles for several years now, and Chrome allows users to lock Incognito tabs on smartphones.

Check In and Live Stickers for Messages

Apple is adding support for a new Messages feature called Check In that will allow you to notify your family member when you have reached home safely. If you are not moving towards the destination specified, the Messages app will securely and temporarily inform your family member about your location, your battery level, and cellular service information. Meanwhile, you will be able to create stickers on your smartphone by long pressing and image and sharing it to the Messages app. These will appear in a new stickers section that can be used across iOS, according to Apple.

iOS 17 is set to roll out to eligible devices later today and Apple is set to bring a few new features and improvements to iOS, the company’s operating system for iPhone. While most of the features that were unveiled by Apple at WWDC 2023 are enhancements of existing features and capabilities, Apple will also introduce a new Journal app later this year along with support for collaborative playlists on Apple Music. Most of Apple’s recent smartphones are eligible to receive the update to iOS 17, which means they will be able to access features like NameDrop, StandBy mode, and Contact Posters later today.

iOS 17 release schedule

iOS 17 is expected to roll out at 10:30pm IST tonight. The release time for the company’s next smartphone OS update is in line with its previous software releases. Apple typically rolls out new updates on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday instead of later in the week — with the exception of major bug fixes or security flaws.

Users who installed beta versions of iOS 17 can also update to the stable version when it rolls out to users tonight by switching off the beta channel via the settings app. Users who have updated to the iOS 17 RC that rolled out last week will have to wait until Apple rolls out iOS 17.1 to switch to the stable version.

iPhone models that will receive iOS 17

According to Apple, iPhone models starting from the iPhone XR — released in 2018 — and newer will receive the update to iOS 17 this year. While the iPhone X and iPhone 8 received the iOS 16 update this year, they will not be updated to iOS 17, according to the company.

Downloading the iOS 17 update on an eligible iPhone is a fairly straightforward process. At 10:30pm tonight, you can follow these steps to download the latest version of iOS on your handset. 

iOS 17 update: How to download

  1. Back up your data using iCloud or a PC/Mac and save important data from third party apps.

  2. Clear unwanted files and uninstall unused apps so there is enough storage to install the update.

  3. Connect your iPhone to a stable Wi-Fi connection and charge your phone to 80 percent.

  4. Open the Settings app and tap on General > Software Update > Download and Install.

  5. After the update is downloaded, restart your iPhone to complete the update.
