Gujarat in Talks With Foxconn for Semiconductor Plant Days After Vedanta JV Falls Apart

India’s Gujarat state is holding talks with Foxconn over a semiconductor plant, a top government official told Reuters, days after the Taiwanese giant broke off a joint-venture plan with India’s Vedanta.

“We are in touch with multiple prospective investors, including Foxconn … Gujarat is uniquely positioned to attract top chipmakers,” said Vijay Nehra, secretary of the science and technology department in Gujarat.

Foxconn this week exited its project with Vedanta, which was also planned for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat, citing issues such as slow progress.

The breakup of the JV was a setback for Modi’s vision to establish India as a semiconductor manufacturing hub. However, Foxconn said later it would apply for India chip incentives on its own and was exploring new partners.

Foxconn did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters is first to report its talks with Gujarat.

Modi wants to make chipmaking a top priority in pursuit of a “new era” in electronics manufacturing, but his plan has so far floundered.

Three companies applied for incentives last year – the Vedanta-Foxconn JV, Singapore-based IGSS Ventures and global consortium ISMC, which counts Tower Semiconductor as a tech partner — but so far no deal has been sealed.

Explaining the Vedanta split on Tuesday, Foxconn said “there was recognition from both sides that the project was not moving fast enough” and there were other “challenging gaps we were not able to smoothly overcome”, without giving more details.

V. Lee, Foxconn’s representative in India, wrote on LinkedIn: “Sometimes, you will fly higher when in solo.”

Its talks with Gujarat come weeks after Micron Technology said it will invest up to $825 million (nearly Rs. 6,800 crore) in a semiconductor testing and packaging facility in the state.

Reliance Jio 5G Rollout Completed Across 33 District Headquarters in Gujarat, Telco Says

Telecom major Jio has rolled out 5G service across all 33 district headquarters of Gujarat under its trial phase, the company said on Friday. This makes Gujarat the first state to get 5G service across all district headquarters and it is also the biggest roll-out of the next generation service till date on trial basis. Jio has stated that it will provide 5G services to subscribers at no additional cost during the trial period.

“Today, Jio has taken a big stride forward by extending its True-5G coverage in each of the 33 district headquarters of Gujarat, thereby making Gujarat the first state in India to get Jio True 5G coverage in 100 per cent of the district headquarters. Gujarat holds a special place, as it is Reliance’s Janmabhoomi (birthplace),” the company said in a statement.

The launch of service in the state begins with the company’s “True 5G”-powered initiative named ‘Education-For-All’, in which Reliance Foundation and Jio are coming together to initially digitise 100 schools in Gujarat.

“We are proud to share that Gujarat is now the first state to have 100 percent district headquarters connected with our robust True 5G network. We want to showcase the real power of this technology and how it can impact a billion lives. Education is a focus-area for our hon’ble Prime Minister,” Reliance Jio Infocomm Chairman Akash M Ambani said in the statement.

The ‘Education-For-All’ initiative will connect schools with Jio’s True5G, advanced content platform, teacher and student collaboration platform, and school management platform.

Earlier this week, Jio announced that its Jio True 5G network was officially rolled out in Pune. The firm said that Pune residents could access speeds of up to 1 gigabits per second (Gbps) with unlimited 5G data.

Jio in a statement released on Wednesday said it begins beta testing of its True 5G network in a city only when a large part of the city is covered by its standalone True 5G network, so that Jio customers get good coverage and experience its advanced 5G network.

Vedanta Selects Gujarat for $20 Billion Semiconductor Project in Partnership With Foxconn: Report

Vedanta, the Indian multinational mining company, has reportedly selected Gujarat for its upcoming semiconductor project. This will be the company’s first major step in its $20 billion (roughly Rs. 1,59,070 crore) joint venture with Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn. The company has reportedly obtained financial and non-financial subsidies including on capital expenditure and cheap electricity from Gujarat to build the semiconductor plants. Vedanta sought 1,000 acres of land free of cost on a 99-year lease and fixed prices for water and power, as per a report, which says that other states such as Maharashtra, Telangana, and Karnataka were also vying to host the company’s upcoming project.

According to a report by Reuters citing two unnamed sources, the Indian multinational mining company Vedanta has picked Gujarat for its upcoming semiconductor project in partnership with Taiwan-based Foxconn.

As mentioned earlier, this is Vedanta’s first major step in its $20 billion (roughly Rs. 1,59,070 crore) joint venture with the smartphone manufacturer from Taiwan. In order to build the semiconductor plants, Vedanta is said to have obtained both financial and non-financial subsidies including on capital expenditures and low-cost electricity.

The project is expected to include display along with semiconductor facilities near Ahmedabad. The Indian company had sought 1,000 acres of land free of cost on a 99-year lease along with water and power at a fixed, low price for 20 years, according to the report, which states that Gujarat beat Maharashtra, which was also in the running to host the project.

An official announcement regarding the project is expected to take place this week with both the sides signing a memorandum of understanding, as per the report.
