Apple Reportedly in Talks With Google to Integrate Gemini for Advanced AI Features on iPhone

Apple is reportedly in discussions with Google to bring the capabilities of Gemini, its generative artificial intelligence (AI)-based large language models, to the iPhone. If this deal comes to fruition, iOS 18 could arrive with AI features backed by Gemini. The company also held talks with ChatGPT maker OpenAI for the same, as per the report. It is said that the Cupertino-based tech giant is resorting to third-party technology providers as its own AI model development is not going as fast as the company had hoped for.

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that Apple “is in talks to build Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence engine into the iPhone.” As per the report, the deal, if it reaches an agreement, will see Apple licence Gemini’s family of AI models to build new capabilities and features for its iPhone. However, it also highlighted that the AI features will be on-device and not cloud-based like the Gemini app for Android.

This would mean while the base model will be provided by Google, Apple will build on top of it to focus it on a certain task and add that limited functionality with iOS. Notably, it is said that the AI features could be announced during the unveiling of iOS 18 at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 in June. However, the discussions appear to be in the early stages as Apple has reportedly held similar talks with OpenAI as well.

It is being said that the reason Apple is seeking AI technologies from a third party is because its technology, in its current state, is quite inferior. Notably, a group of researchers affiliated with the company published a pre-print version of a paper that highlighted an AI model called MM1, which was capable of multimodal capabilities. But as a downside, the authors also stated that the foundation model was still in the pre-training phase as it was fine-tuning the architecture.

Gurman previously hinted that the AI features coming to the iPhone could be added to enhance several functionalities. Siri was touted to get AI features to improve its natural language processing as well as perform more complex tasks. Apple Music could also get an AI that creates personalised playlists for users.

Google Tests Gemini AI Integration With Messages App, Rolls Out Multiple Productivity Features for Android

Google rolled out nine new features for Android devices, including several generative artificial intelligence (AI)-based features, on Monday, February 26. The announcement of the features has coincided with the first day of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024. The highlight among the features is the integration of Gemini, the company’s latest AI-powered chatbot, into the Messages app. While it is currently in beta testing, the tech giant has begun rolling out other features for smartphones, Android Auto, and Wear OS.

The announcement was made via a post on Google’s Newsroom, which highlighted that these new features are aimed at improving productivity of users. Gemini’s integration with Google Messages is an interesting expansion by the company. Users who have enrolled in Google’s beta testing programme should soon see it. The feature adds a separate chat box for Gemini where they can have a conversation, ask queries, get it to write or rewrite messages and much more. With this update, Gemini is available as a standalone app, as virtual assistant, and within the Messages app. It is not certain whether the feature will be included in the Gemini Advanced plan once it is out of testing.

Messages app is not the only place where AI is being added, however. Android Auto is also getting a similar feature where generative AI can summarize long texts or group chats and read it out while the user drives. It will also suggest relevant replies and actions that can be selected via just a single tap.

One accessibility feature is also being added to the Lookout app. The app is designed for visually impaired users and can identify objects, read texts, and more through the smartphone’s camera. It will now automatically create AI-generate captions for images seen online or received through messages and read it out to users. It is rolling out globally in English. In the same vein, Google Maps is also getting an update to Lens in Maps, which was first added in October 2023. Users can now point the phone’s camera at surroundings and the TalkBack feature will read the place’s information out loud, including its business hours, rating or directions on how to get there.

A few non-AI features are also making their debut. The most notable is the handwritten annotation feature for Google Docs on Android. This will allow users to write and draw with either fingers or stylus on documents to create notes for themselves. The second is a tweak to the output switcher for Spotify, which allows users to pick the device where the output of the sound will come from. This can now be done directly from the home screen.

Finally, moving to the Wear OS-based features. Google is now rolling out an update to its Health Connect app that will allow users with wearables such as Fitbit, Oura Ring, and apps such as AllTrails and MyFitnessPal to integrate their data. The app will show detailed view of health and fitness trackers and will provide actionable insights on them.

Last two Wear OS features are smaller but can be useful for some users. Google Wallet passes are now available on Wear OS smartwatches and will allow users to access them directly. Google Maps for Wear OS will now show public transit directions to help users catch a bus or a train. The app will show details such as departure times, compass-guided navigation, and option to mirror directions from phone to the smartwatch.

Google Launches Gemma, a Family of Open-Source Lightweight AI Models for Developers

Google released a new lightweight open-source family of artificial intelligence (AI) models called Gemma on Wednesday, February 21. Two variants of Gemma, Gemma 2B and Gemma 7B, have been made available to developers and researchers. The tech giant said it used the same technology and research for Gemma that it used to create Gemini AI models. Interestingly, Gemini 1.5 model was unveiled last week. These smaller language models can be used to make task-specific AI tools, and the company allows responsible commercial usage and distribution.

The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). He said, “Demonstrating strong performance across benchmarks for language understanding and reasoning, Gemma is available worldwide starting today in two sizes (2B and 7B), supports a wide range of tools and systems, and runs on a developer laptop, workstation or @GoogleCloud.” The company has also created a developer-focused landing page for the AI model, where people can find quickstart links and code examples on its Kaggle Models page, quickly deploy AI tools via Vertex AI (Google’s platform for developers to build AI/ML tools), or play around with the model and attach it to a separate domain using Collab (it will require Keras 3.0).

Highlighting some of the features of the Gemma AI models, Google said that both the variants are pre-trained and instruction-tuned. It is integrated with popular data repositories such as Hugging Face, MaxText, NVIDIA NeMo, and TensorRT-LLM. The language models can run on laptops, workstations, or Google Clouds via Vertex AI and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). The tech giant has also released a new Responsible Generative AI Toolkit to help developers build safe and responsible AI tools.

As per reports shared by Google, Gemma has outperformed Meta’s Llama-2 language model in multiple major benchmarks such as Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU), HumanEval, HellaSwag, and BIG-Bench Hard (BBH). Notably, Meta has already begun working on Llama-3, as per various reports.

Releasing open-source smaller language models for developers and researchers is something that has become a trend in the AI space. Stability, Meta, MosaicML, and even Google with its Flan-T5 models already exist in open-source. On one hand, it helps build an ecosystem as all developers and data scientists who are not working with the AI firms can try their hands at the technology, and create unique tools. On the other hand, it also benefits the company as most often firms themselves offer deployment platforms that come with a subscription fee. Further, adoption by developers often highlights flaws in the training data or the algorithm that might have escaped detection before release, allowing the enterprises to improve their models.

Google One Surpasses 100 Million Subscribers Right After Announcement of Gemini Advanced Plan

Google One, the company’s all-in-one subscription service for extra cloud storage across Gmail, Google Photos, Drive, and more, recently crossed 100 million subscribers. The major milestone came just a day after the tech giant unveiled Gemini Advanced, the artificial intelligence (AI) assistant backed by its most powerful foundational model, Gemini Ultra. Its subscription plan is being bundled with Google One, and it is said to have contributed to the accelerated growth of Google One subscribers. The search engine maker had announced that the Gemini Advanced plan will also bring AI capabilities to its other services.

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, revealed the milestone via a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) and said, “We just crossed 100M Google One subscribers! Looking forward to building on that momentum with our new AI Premium Plan (launched yesterday) offering AI features like Gemini Advanced.” Additionally, he also revealed that Gmail, Docs, and other services that are part of the Google One subscription will also get AI-based features.

The number is significant for the tech giant, given it removed its free unlimited storage offer for Google Photos in 2021 and has been pushing users to opt for the paid subscription ever since. Back then, the move was not popular, especially for users who had backed more than 15GB of data, which exceeded the free limit. However, gaining more than 100 million subscribers in less than four years highlights the value proposition of Google One.

The impact of the achievement becomes clearer when compared to the company’s YouTube paid subscriptions. Google also recently hit 100 million subscribers on the platform, comprising both YouTube Premium subscribers and YouTube Music subscribers. The milestone came nine years after a paid tier was first announced for YouTube (YouTube Red was launched in October 2015).

In India, Google One monthly subscriptions start at the price of Rs. 130 for 100GB of combined storage space. This also includes some AI-based photo editing features, but none are powered by Gemini. The premium plan with 2TB of storage space is priced at Rs. 650 a month, whereas the Gemini Advanced subscription plan, named Google One AI Premium, is set at Rs. 1,950 per month.
