Girl, 9, killed in Florida shooting rampage remembered as a ‘true joy’

The 9-year-old Florida girl killed in the shooting rampage Wednesday was remembered by her devastated family as an excellent student, “amazing gymnast” and “true joy” whose life was cut short by “senseless violence.”

T’yonna Major, 9, was killed and her mom, Brandi Major, was wounded by Keith Moses, 19, after he opened fire on a Spectrum 13 news crew.

The journalists were covering an earlier murder in Orlando’s Pine Hills neighborhood, where Moses allegedly shot and killed a 38-year-old acquaintance named Nathacha Augustin

Reporter Dylan Lyons, 24, was killed and photographer Jesse Walden was injured, authorities said.

Phyllis Turner, T’yonna’s maternal great-aunt, told NBC News that the tragic girl was “the apple of her parents’ eye — she was just a true joy to them.”

She said T’yonna was an “extremely smart” student at Pine Hills Elementary School who was at the top of her class and also “an amazing gymnast.”

Her coach wanted to “really take her under her wing” because she believed she had the potential to compete in college and even “go to the Olympics,” Turner told the outlet.

“She was a perfectionist. She didn’t like second and third place,” Turner said. “She just believed in excelling in everything she did.”

She said T’yonna also was a “funny little girl” who “brought so much joy and laughter to everybody,” adding that her parents are “absolutely devastated” by the incomprehensible loss.

Turner said Brandi was shot in the arm and has been released from the hospital.

Dad Tokiyo Major wrote in a GoFundMe post that T’yonna was “a light to everyone that knew her,” adding, “She was everything to us. Senseless violence has taken the life of my little girl.”

Neighbor Thermon Patterson, 66, told NBC News that he saw Major rush out into the street crying for help after T’yonna was shot.

He said he didn’t see the gunman but felt he could have easily been targeted because he often sits outside his nearby home.

“I’m glad he’s off the street,” Patterson said about Moses.

Pine Hills Elementary School Principal Latonya Smothers said T’yonna was a “kind and beautiful young girl with an infectious smile. She will be missed dearly.”

She added in the message: “I know I speak for our entire Pine Hills community when I express the grief that we feel at the loss of one of our own.”

Keith Moses, 19, has been charged with second-degree murder and additional counts are expected.

Moses was charged with second-degree murder related to Augustin’s death, but additional charges are expected.

The “known gang member” has a lengthy criminal record that includes arrests for theft, battery-domestic violence and armed robbery, NBC News reported.

State Attorney Monique Worrell said Moses had a single arrest since becoming an adult, a 2021 marijuana possession charge that was later dropped.

3 California gang members charged with baby Jasper Wu’s murder

Three California gang members were hit with murder charges Thursday in the stray bullet shooting death of a 23-month-old baby last year, prosecutors announced.

Baby Jasper Wu had been sleeping in his car seat of his family’s white Lexus when he was struck and killed by a stray bullet Nov. 6, 2021.

The bullet was fired by either Trevor Green or Ivory Bivins, who were chasing down Johnny Jackson and Keison Lee in an alleged “rolling gun battle” that spilled onto the Oakland interstate, the Alameda County District Attorney’s office said.

“This horrific tragedy is a parent’s worst nightmare: An innocent child struck by gunfire while riding in the car,” said DA O’Malley in a statement.

The two groups of gang members were allegedly shooting one another from their cars on the northbound side of Interstate 880 around 2 p.m. that afternoon. A bullet from Green and Bivins’ car missed the Nissan Altima carrying Jackson and Lee and traveled across the highway into oncoming southbound traffic

The bullet smashed through the windshield and struck Jasper in the head.

His mother, Cherry An, had been driving the car home to Fremont from San Francisco at the time of the shooting. Jasper’s aunt and two cousins were also in the car, but were not hurt.

Jasper was rushed to a nearby children’s hospital and pronounced dead just a few weeks shy of his second birthday.

Authorities found the bullet lodged in the seat behind the toddler’s car seat when they arrived, KTVU reported.

Green and Bivins were arrested in March 2022, while Jackson was arrested Wednesday, O’Malley said. Lee was shot and killed in a separate, drive-by shooting last month, KTVU said.

Green, Bivins and Jackson were charged with murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Green and Bivins also face additional charges of conspiracy to commit a crime and criminal street gang conspiracy.

14-year-old with 18 priors suspected in scooter shootings

A 14-year-old gang member with 18 busts already under his belt is suspected in three shootings that occurred just days apart in The Bronx, police said Friday.

The kid made off on a scooter each time with an accomplice, police said — till he was finally busted for two of the crimes Wednesday.

The young suspect — whose arrests date back to age 10 or 11 — allegedly opened fire into a Dunkin’ Donuts from the back of a scooter Sept. 19 just after 2:30 p.m., said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said. The bullets broke the glass at the store at 5501 Broadway and struck the young shooter’s intended target, Essig said.

A few days later, the same scooter with the teen onboard was spotted after a 20-year-old man was shot in the leg at 131 West Kingsbridge Road early Sept. 25, according to Essig.

The targets were part of the “1300” or “OKB” gang, which is a subsection of the Crips, the chief said.

The teen, who was not identified because of his young age, is allegedly a member of the “Young Gunner” gang, a rival Bloods offshoot, Essig added.

Cops believe the 14-year-old was also involved in a shooting on early Sept. 22 at 5360 Broadway where the same scooter was spotted, but the teen was only charged in the other two, according to Essig.

The firearm has not yet been recovered.

The 14-year-old, who is now facing attempted murder and criminal possession-of-a-weapon charges, has 18 prior arrests dating back to 2018 for various crimes, including grand larceny robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

Police are still looking for the scooter’s driver.
