Hyundai Ties Up With Shell to Install Fast EV Chargers at 36 Dealerships Across India

Hyundai Motor India on Wednesday said it has tied up with Shell India to install 60 kW fast chargers across 36 of its dealerships in the country.

The company has signed a memorandum of agreement with Shell India Markets in this regard, the automaker said in a statement.

The strategic partnership aims to increase the expansion of charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles in the country, it added.

“Such strategic partnerships are fundamental in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles by customers to achieve the national goal of carbon neutrality,” Hyundai Motor India MD & CEO Unsoo Kim said.

Hyundai currently has an existing network of 72 electric vehicle dealers in 45-cities.

Shell India Director Sanjay Varkey said the strategic partnership with Hyundai aims to improve the charging infrastructure for battery electric vehicles in India by offering easy access and dynamic availability for a safe, reliable, and seamless charging experience.

Delhi to Get More EV Charging, Battery Swapping Stations as Cab Aggregators Increase E-Bikes

The NDMC is planning to increase the number of EV charging stations in Lutyens’ Delhi and even provide battery swapping facilities at some of these points, a senior official said on Wednesday.

With Delhi being among the most polluted capitals in the world, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been making a push for electric vehicles to nudge residents to opt for cleaner vehicle options.

There are around 100 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the national capital at present and this would be the first time that some of them would have battery swapping facilities, which is quite prominent in Western countries, he said.

The official said the aim is to provide easy accessibility to charging stations and to save time by providing swapping facilities.

This will give a major push to EVs in the city. Various PSUs, including the Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments Limited (REIL) and the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (KELTRON), have approached the NDMC for setting up public charging stations, the official said.

NDMC Vice Chairman Satish Upadhyay said the demand for electric vehicles is expected to rise with increasing prices of petrol and diesel.

“Moreover, there is an urgent need to give a push to EVs to provide the city more green alternatives. Also, several app-based aggregators are moving to e-bikes. Once there is a web of such stations, people will not worry about the issue of charging and then there will be more such vehicles,” said Upadhyay.

“The plan to add more EV charging stations is under process, but we are also planning to install battery swapping facilities at some of the prominent stations,” Upadhyay added.

Battery swapping is an alternative that involves exchanging discharged batteries for charged ones. Battery swapping de-links the vehicle and fuel (in this case, the battery) and thereby leads to a reduction in the upfront cost of the vehicles.

Upadhyay said a policy will be prepared for the location of charging stations, and their total number and mode of allotment.

“We cannot install charging stations everywhere. We need to prioritise places where there are a lot of people travelling. The total number of charging stations is yet to be decided and the mode of allotment to such operators be decided in a time-bound manner,” the vice chairman said.

“We have been approached by three PSUs. We will sign MoUs with them for setting up of Public Charging related Infrastructure,” the vice chairman said.

The proposal in this regard was part of the agenda of Thursday’s council meeting but could not be taken for discussion because of the ruckus.

“This will be presented in the next house. Following the approval, we will ask the PSUs to survey and put forward their plans. We will then analyse them and select the best plan to take the matter forward,” Upadhyay added.

Delhi to Get 100 EV Charging Stations by July End, to Charge Under Rs. 3 per Unit

Under the flagship initiative of the Delhi government, 100 EV (electric vehicles) charging stations will be established at various metro stations, bus depots and other places across the national capital.

On Thursday, Delhi Power Minister Atishi reviewed the project along with the power department officials. During the meeting, Atishi directed the officials of the power department and Delhi Transco Ltd (DTL) to proactively address the issues occurring in the installation of EV charging stations and ensure that 50 of them are ready by the end of April and 100 by the end of July.

She directed the officials to expedite the work and complete it within the stipulated timelines. She further said that “the efforts of the Kejriwal government have made Delhi emerge as the electric vehicle (EV) capital of the country in recent years. In this direction, the government is establishing 100 EV charging stations across the city to strengthen Delhi’s EV charging infrastructure.”

“With this project, there would be an excellent and convenient EV charging infrastructure in every part of the city, where the cost of charging per unit will be the lowest not only in the country but also in the world. People will have to spend less than Rs. 3 per unit for EV charging,” She added.

As a result of the government’s efforts, Atishi said that 16.7 percent of the total vehicles sold in the capital in December 2022 were electric vehicles, which is the highest in the country.

“Now that the demand for electric vehicles is increasing so rapidly among people in Delhi, we are building 100 EV charging stations in the capital to ensure that people have enough charging stations available around them and do not face any problems related to charging,” the Minister said.

Notably, all these charging stations being set up by the Delhi government are based on a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Last year, the government had issued the country’s largest tender in this sector. The cost of charging per unit at these charging stations is even less than Rs. 3 per unit, said the official statement.

Delhi Announces New EV Action Plan, Aims to Install One Public Charging Point for 15 EVs by 2024

The Delhi government has updated its agenda for the electric vehicles by announcing that it will install at least one public charging point for every 15 EVs by 2024. These charging points will be accessible within 3 km travel from anywhere in Delhi. The government released its new three-year ‘action plan’ for electric vehicles till 2025, as it celebrates two years of its EV Policy that was first launched in 2020. The plans are in accordance with Delhi government’s aim to turn the country’s capital into one of the world’s most ‘Light EV’-friendly cities.

According to the new plans announced by the Delhi government under its ‘Charging/Swapping Infrastructure Action Plan for 2022-25′, the union territory will install around 18,000 public and semi-public EV charging points by 2024.

At present, Delhi has around 2,452 charging points and 234 operational swapping stations. While 594 charging points have been installed using the single window mechanism, 896 charging points are under the process of installation.

The document also mentions that the government is planning to target 25 percent of all new vehicle registrations under the EV policy by 2024. The accelerated adoption of EVs in Delhi is expected to lead to an increase in the number of charging points across the union territory.

According to the document shared by the government, battery swapping is considered to be a feasible solution for electric two and three-wheeled vehicles, which allows a customer to purchase an EV without a battery, substantially reducing the EV’s cost.
