Karnataka to Convert 35,000 Buses Into Electric Vehicles by 2030: State Transport Minister

Following the footsteps of Delhi and Maharashtra, Karnataka is also planning to launch all electric fleet in the state by the end of this decade, said state Transport Minister B Sriramulu in the legislative assembly on Wednesday. The minister reportedly issued the statement while responding to a query during the question hour. So far, the state has not bought any electric buses, according to the minister, but they are being operated on a contract basis. However, going forward, Karnataka will soon convert buses into electric vehicles.

Karnataka Transport Minister B Sriramulu, during his response at legislative assembly on Wednesday, ensured that the all 35,000 buses in the state will be converted into electric vehicles by 2030. According to the information provided by the minister, the BMTC is currently operating 90 electric buses since December 2021.

The minister also highlighted the increasing diesel prices, according to a PTI report. He mentioned that diesel buses incur a cost of Rs. 68.53 per km, while the contractual electric buses are costing Rs. 64.67 per km.

Under the Smart City Project, the state is operating 90 electric buses since December 2021 for 12 years, while the state has ordered 300 electric buses under the central government’s Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric vehicles — FAME II scheme, as per the minister.

The per km cost of these buses is Rs. 61.90. 75. They have already begun operation since August 15, 2022.

In May this year, the Delhi government approved the induction of 1,500 low-floor electric buses in the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has also added electric buses to its fleet.

Delhi Announces New EV Action Plan, Aims to Install One Public Charging Point for 15 EVs by 2024

The Delhi government has updated its agenda for the electric vehicles by announcing that it will install at least one public charging point for every 15 EVs by 2024. These charging points will be accessible within 3 km travel from anywhere in Delhi. The government released its new three-year ‘action plan’ for electric vehicles till 2025, as it celebrates two years of its EV Policy that was first launched in 2020. The plans are in accordance with Delhi government’s aim to turn the country’s capital into one of the world’s most ‘Light EV’-friendly cities.

According to the new plans announced by the Delhi government under its ‘Charging/Swapping Infrastructure Action Plan for 2022-25′, the union territory will install around 18,000 public and semi-public EV charging points by 2024.

At present, Delhi has around 2,452 charging points and 234 operational swapping stations. While 594 charging points have been installed using the single window mechanism, 896 charging points are under the process of installation.

The document also mentions that the government is planning to target 25 percent of all new vehicle registrations under the EV policy by 2024. The accelerated adoption of EVs in Delhi is expected to lead to an increase in the number of charging points across the union territory.

According to the document shared by the government, battery swapping is considered to be a feasible solution for electric two and three-wheeled vehicles, which allows a customer to purchase an EV without a battery, substantially reducing the EV’s cost.

Hyderabad Plans to Set Up 330 EV Charging Centres Based on Feasibility of Locations

As part of the policies of the Centre and the State government to cut down carbon emission and encourage the use of electric vehicles, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) proposes to set up 230 EV-charging centres.

Also, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority would be setting up another 100 stations within its limits, an official release said on Friday.

As nodal agency of the State, the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) entered into an agreement with GHMC to set up the charging centres at different locations in the city.

“GHMC submitted 230 and HMDA submitted 100 locations to (TSREDCO) for installation of electric vehicle-charging centres. Each location has high-speed charging with DC-001(15KW) capacity and low charging with C (122-150 KW ) capacity facilities. These charging centres will be set up accordingly at the feasibility of locations and further the petroleum corporations also install charging stations according to their convenience,” the release said.

The charging centres would be installed as per the survey reports and recommended locations given by the civic body.

TSREDCO decided to set up 14 centres on an experimental basis and to see the revenue generated from them, it added.

A few days back, MG Motor India said it has inaugurated the first two residential community SMART electric vehicle chargers in Jaipur as part of its plans to set up more such charging stations in the Rajasthan capital.

Under the company’s MG Charge initiative, the automaker will install 1,000 AC fast chargers at residential localities across India in 1,000 days, it said in a statement.

MG Motor said it is taking conscious steps towards green mobility and strengthening the EV charging infrastructure in the country.

It provides 6-way charging ecosystem with a plug-and-charge cable onboard, AC fast chargers (installed at the customer’s home/office), DC superfast chargers at MG dealerships, public charging network, charge-on-the-go with RSA (Roadside Assistance) and community charger.

Jio-Bp Partners With Zomato to Power Its EV Fleet

Jio-Bp, the fuel and mobility joint venture between Reliance Industries and London-based BP, on Wednesday announced its partnership with Zomato to provide electric vehicle (EV) mobility services to the food aggregator to support its plans to have a 100 percent EV fleet by 2030. The new announcement comes just days after Jio-Bp reported plans to set up EV charging and battery-swapping stations across 12 cities in North India. The firm will set up its facilities at properties of real estate developer Omaxe.

In a joint statement, Jio-Bp said that it would provide EV mobility services to Zomato along with access to ‘Jio-Bp Pulse’ branded battery-swapping stations for last mile delivery.

Zomato last year joined nonprofit The Climate’s global electric mobility programme EV100 to have 100 percent EVs for its fleet by 2030. The Gurugram-based company already has EVs on its platform in cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.

“The current EV fleet is a small fraction of the active fleet of delivery partners, and we understand that getting to 100 percent adoption of EVs will not be easy, but is essential in the long run,” Zomato Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal had said while announcing its EV-focussed plans in June last year.

One of the key challenges for Zomato to expand its EV fleet is the lack of charging infrastructure and limited battery range. This could be resolved through the latest partnership.

Jio-Bp offers EV charging infrastructure to consumers under the Jio-Bp Pulse brand.

Earlier this month, the Indian subsidiary of British automotive MG Motor came together with lubricant brand Castrol to partner with Jio-Bp for exploring mobility solutions for EVs in the country. The joint venture also has TVS Motor and Mahindra Group as the key automobile companies to develop solutions for a range of consumer and commercial EVs.

In addition to Jio-Bp, Zomato has local vendors including Zypp, Eveez, and Bud-e in select cities to support its ongoing transition to the EV fleet.

Last year, Reliance BP Mobility, the company that operates under the Jio-Bp brand, partnered with Zomato’s arch-rival Swiggy to develop an ecosystem for EV battery-swapping stations across the country. The partnership was also aimed to help build greener and cost-effective solutions for delivery fleets.

Jio-Bp also last week announced that it would set up its EV charging and battery-swapping infrastructure at various Omaxe properties across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, New Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala, Amritsar, Jaipur, Sonipat, and Bahadurgarh in a phased manner.
