Google NotebookLM Gets Upgraded to Gemini 1.5 Pro, Rolls Out in India and Other Markets: How It Works

Google’s NotebookLM received several new features and was expanded to more than 200 countries and regions on Thursday. The AI-powered research and writing assistant was initially introduced at last year’s Google I/O event as Project Tailwind and was later rolled out to a limited number of users in the US. Now, the platform is available to users in India and other countries with features such as web URLs and Google Slides as sources, inline citations, and more. It is also powered by the Gemini 1.5 Pro AI model.

NotebookLM gets new features

After the integration with Gemini 1.5 Pro, the AI model that powers Gemini Advanced, NotebookLM now has multimodal capabilities. What this means is that users can add pictures, charts, and diagrams in sources and the platform will answer questions about them. Earlier, it could only read and analyse the text.

Another useful new feature is the inclusion of Google Slides and website URLs as sources. With this, users can upload a link to a website or a Google Slides file and have the AI chatbot organise and answer questions on it. The Gemini 1.5 Pro model is again useful here as it lets the chatbot go through the slides. Other than that, users can upload sources from Google Drive, PDF files, Text files, and copied text.

Further, the platform now shows inline citations for its generated responses. Hovering over the citation will open the supporting passage from the source for easy fact-checking. Users can also click the passage to dive deeper into the original text. Additionally, the NotebookLM also has a deeper level of understanding of the sources, and it can generate frequently asked questions (FAQs), briefing documents, and study guides when prompted.

During a media briefing, Raiza Martin, Senior Product Manager at Google Labs, told Gadgets 360 that the AI model will not be trained on the user’s data or the sources in any capacity. Further, journalists were told that since NotebookLM is a closed system, it does not run a web search to answer any question and only relies on the information present in the sources.

  2. Tap on Try NotebookLM.
  3. Look for the Sources icon on the left margin.
  4. There should be a plus icon next to it. Click it.
  5. Choose your preferred mode of uploading source.
  6. Choose the file or URL you want to use.
  7. Now, you can type your query in the text field at the bottom.

Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 With Support for AI Capabilities, 120Hz Display Launched

Qualcomm announced its newest processor for mobile – Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 – on Friday, May 7. The chipset is fabricated on a 6nm process and comes with an Adreno GPU. It arrives with 5G support and boasts artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities courtesy of an AI Engine. It is speculated to power smartphones in the lower and mid-range segments. The chipset comes hot on the heels of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC, which was unveiled in March.

Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 specifications

In a blog post, Qualcomm said its newest mobile processor brings “performance, gaming, and intelligent assistance”. It is built on a 64-bit architecture and has Kryo CPU cores with a peak clock speed of 2.3 GHz. It is claimed to have an AI Engine including Qualcomm Hexagon Vector eXtensions for delivering a responsive performance.

Additionally, it has Qualcomm Sensing Hub with a Low Power AI System that supports hardware-accelerated always-on voice assistants, multi-mic far-field detection, and echo cancellation. The Adreno GPU onboard offers support for 120fps gaming, according to the company. Qualcomm says devices running this chipset will feature LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 onboard storage.

The chip has been equipped to support full-HD+ displays with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 SoC will be able support up to 108-megapixel sensors, and the chipset features a triple 12-bit Spectra ISP setup, offering AI-enhanced low-light capturing capabilities. It can also playback videos at a maximum resolution of 1080p at 60fps.

Qualcomm’s new chipset features the Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF system with support for both mmWave and Sub-6 5G networks. It offers Global 5G Multi-SIM support for networks and promises a peak download speed of up to 2.5Gbps. The chip also gets Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6200 technology and supports Bluetooth 5.2.

The company says its new mobile processor supports satellite systems such as QZSS, Galileo, Beidou, GLONASS, NavIC, and GPS with sidewalk-level accuracy. It also enables support for up to Quick Charge 4+ via USB Type-C.

WhatsApp Business Rolling Out AI Chatbot and Meta Verified Badge, India Among First Markets to Get It

WhatsApp Business is getting multiple new features, including a major artificial intelligence (AI) upgrade to help business owners intelligently automate some of their communication on the platform. The social media giant announced a new AI-powered chatbot for WhatsApp Business during an event in São Paulo. It has also rolled out the Meta Verified badge for these users. India is among the first markets to get these features. Additionally, the company is also testing a Call functionality for the business accounts.

WhatsApp Business gets an AI assistant

In the previous months, Meta has rolled out chatbots powered by its Llama-3 AI model to WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger in multiple markets. The Meta AI chatbot comes with all the general text-based capabilities of a large language model. Additionally, it can also generate images. Now, the company is rolling out a similar AI assistant for WhatsApp Business users.

In a newsroom post, Meta said, “We’re training AI to respond to the most popular questions businesses receive on WhatsApp, so they can quickly help customers find the answers they’re seeking.” It appears the feature will not just send out pre-written responses but intelligently offer assistance based on the needs and requirements of the customer. It can also be used to market products and services to those who might be interested in them. The company is aiming to innovate communication automation with AI technology to make businesses rely more on them.

This feature is currently under testing but will be rolled out in India and Singapore, followed by Brazil in the coming days. It is not known whether it will be rolled out in a limited capacity or to all WhatsApp Business users in the country.

After rolling it out to Facebook and Instagram, Meta Verified badges are now also being rolled out to WhatsApp Business accounts. These badges will appear as a white checkmark within a green starburst circle next to the name of the business. The badge will denote the businesses that have registered their information with Meta and receive advanced account support from the company. The Meta Verified badge will appear on the WhatsApp Channel and the custom WhatsApp page for the businesses. Meta Verified Badges have started rolling out in India, Brazil, Indonesia, and Colombia.

Apart from these, the social media giant is also testing a calling functionality for WhatsApp Business account holders. This will allow customers to call larger businesses on WhatsApp. Meta says this will enable businesses to quickly resolve their issues and get help for complicated requests. The social media giant did not specify a timeline for the launch of this feature.

Apple to Unveil AI-Powered Smart Replies Feature for the Mail App at WWDC 2024: Report

Apple could introduce an AI-powered Smart Replies feature to its native Mail app, as per a report. The Smart Reply feature will be able to use artificial intelligence (AI) to instantly generate responses to emails in the inbox. The tech giant is reported to unveil the feature at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 scheduled for June 10. Siri is said to be equipped with the Smart Replies feature as well, which would allow it to generate messages and reply to emails on the user’s behalf. Reportedly, these AI-led upgrades are being developed by Apple’s Project BlackPearl.

Apple to add AI-Powered features to the Mail App

According to a report by AppleInsider, the Mail app is set for a major upgrade. Citing people familiar with the matter, it claimed that a Smart Replies feature will be able to generate email replies and help users respond to emails quickly. It is also said to be able to change the tonality of the responses. For instance, users can ask the reply to be more professional, more conversational, or friendlier.

The report claimed that the pre-release version of Apple’s upcoming operating systems also showed more upgrades for the Mail app. The search results of the app were seen to include data from Contacts, locations, and on-device documents. This is reported to add a more nuanced search function for the Mail app. These features are said to be powered by the Ajax large language model (LLM), Apple’s yet-to-be-announced on-device AI model.

Further, the Mail app might be able to categorise emails based on their text, claimed the report. This could mean that Apple will be equipping the Mail app with machine learning technology to analyse emails. The report highlighted that the app might be able to classify emails into one of the six pre-defined lists among Commerce, News, Other, Promotions, Social, and Transactions.

This could be useful for those who receive a large number of emails. Official email accounts of organisations may also benefit from it. Additionally, the report claims that Smart Replies and email categorisation features will also be added to Siri. While it is difficult to gauge the use case for the latter, the former will allow users to verbally respond to emails with AI-generated content.

Wix Launches AI-Powered Mobile App Builder That Can Create Apps With Text Prompts

Wix launched a new AI-powered chatbot for its mobile App Builder platform on Wednesday. The cloud-based no-code platform development company introduced artificial intelligence (AI) tools to its app-building platform just months after introducing its AI-powered end-to-end website development tool. The platform not only lets users create a branded app for businesses, but it also deploys the app to the App Store on iOS and Android’s Google Play Store. Users can also release version updates and new features through it.

Wix Launches AI-Powered App Builder Chatbot

In a press release, the company announced that it is automating the entire app-building experience for its users. The no-code company previously allowed users to build apps without requiring knowledge of backend and frontend software development, allowing them to customise and build a frontend using easy-to-use tools, while creating the backend.

As part of the automated app-building upgrade, the company is making the process simpler for Wix users, by making it easier to pick the right looks and features for their smartphone apps. Wix is calling the tool a “conversational AI chat experience”. As the name suggests, there is a chatbot that asks the user several questions about the app, and based on the information provided it can create a customised app.

How the Wix AI-Powered App Builder Works

The process begins by telling the AI the goals and intent of creating the app. Once it confirms the layout for the mobile app, it asks questions about the features the users want in the app. Users do not need to provide the information in technical terms and can just highlight the purpose. The AI can still process that information to show relevant features. At this point, users can upload a logo for the app and the final design is then generated.

In case the user prefers making specific changes to the app, they will still have the editing tools to do so. Wix also extends support to its users after the app has been created. It can also submit the app to the Google Play Store and the App Store. Once it goes live, the platform can be used to release version updates and new features. The company provides a dashboard through which users can check all app activities as well.

The platform and access to the AI chatbot are currently available to the paid subscribers of the App Builder. The subscription price starts at $99 (roughly Rs. 8,300) a month, according to the company’s website.

Gmail for Android Will Reportedly Be Upgraded With Email Summarisation, Other Gemini-Powered Capabilities

Gmail for Android app is likely to be upgraded with new features powered by its artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini, according to a report. It is tipped to bring a dedicated Gemini button to the Android app which may offer more functionality beyond generating summaries of emails, with the ability to handle “non-email queries”. These additions are reportedly part of an update that only limited users have access to right now and could eventually be expanded to all users.

Android Authority reports that the features were spotted in the Gmail for Android app version 2024.05.26.638440827 and were activated after enabling some flags. The update brings notable AI capabilities via the Gemini button, which was already available to Workspace users but recently arrived on another beta version of Gmail for Android.

It reportedly introduces three new quick prompts: Summarize this email, List the next steps, and Suggest a reply. Tapping any of the above-mentioned options opens up a conversation with the AI chatbot.

The Gemini button can also be used to generate replies for emails and tweak them for different tones., according to the publication. It can also access content from previous emails but on a “limited” scale.

Notably, Google reportedly introduced the Gemini button in Gmail for Android beta app version 2024.05.19.635289964. It is said to appear as a star-shaped icon on the top banner, preceding the archive option.

Gemini on Google Messages

Google has also reportedly rolled out the Gemini integration in Google Messages. This feature was first showcased at Google I/O 2024 and can execute message-related tasks such as drafting, rephrasing and rewriting them with different tones. Additionally, users can also have conversations and ask it to fetch information from the internet.

However, it cannot be used in group conversations or group chats on WhatsApp. It does not have access to voice messages either, the report suggests. Google has reportedly introduced this feature in most regions except India, the UK, Switzerland, and the EEA region comprised of the 27 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

OpenAI, Google DeepMind Employees Warn of AI Risks, Demand Better Whistleblower Protection Policies

OpenAI and Google DeepMind are among the top tech companies at the forefront of building artificial intelligence (AI) systems and capabilities. However, several current and former employees of these organisations have now signed an open letter claiming that there is little to no oversight in building these systems and that not enough attention is being paid toward major risks posed by this technology. The open letter is endorsed by two of the three ‘godfathers’ of AI, Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio and seeks better whistleblower protection policies from their employers.

OpenAI, Google DeepMind Employees Demand Right to Warn about AI

The open letter states that it was written by current and former employees at major AI companies who believe in the potential of AI to deliver unprecedented benefits to humanity. It also points towards the risks posed by the technology which include strengthening societal inequalities, spreading misinformation and manipulation, and even losing control over AI systems that could lead to human extinction.

The open letter highlights that the self-governance structure implemented by these tech giants is ineffective in ensuring scrutiny of these risks. It also claimed that “strong financial incentives” further incentivise companies to overlook the potential danger AI systems can cause.

Claiming that AI companies are already aware of AI’s capabilities, limitations, and risk levels of different kinds of harm, the open letter questions their intention to take corrective measures. “They currently have only weak obligations to share some of this information with governments, and none with civil society. We do not think they can all be relied upon to share it voluntarily,” it states.

The open letter has made four demands from their employers. First, the employees want companies to not enter into or enforce any agreement that prohibits their criticism for risk-related concerns. Second, they have asked for a verifiably anonymous process for current and former employees to raise risk-related concerns to the company’s board, to regulators, and to an appropriate independent organisation.

The employees also urge the organisations to develop a culture of open criticism. Finally, the open letter highlights that employers should not retaliate against existing and former employees who publicly share risk-related confidential information after other processes have failed.

A total of 13 former and current employees of OpenAI and Google DeepMind have signed the letter. Aside from the two ‘godfathers’ of AI, British computer scientist Stuart Russell has also endorsed this move.

Former OpenAI Employee Speaks on AI Risks

One of the former employees of OpenAI who signed the open letter, Daniel Kokotajlo, also made a series of posts on X (formerly known as Twitter), highlighting his experience at the company and the risks of AI. He claimed that when he resigned from the company, he was asked to sign a nondisparagement clause to prevent him from saying anything critical of the company. He also claimed that the company threatened Kokotajlo with taking away his vested equity for refusing to sign the agreement.

Kokotajlo claimed that the neural nets of AI systems are rapidly growing from the large datasets being fed to them. Further, he added that there were no adequate measures in place to monitor the risks.

“There is a lot we don’t understand about how these systems work and whether they will remain aligned to human interests as they get smarter and possibly surpass human-level intelligence in all arenas,” he added.

Notably, OpenAI is building Model Spec, a document through which it aims to better guide the company in building ethical AI technology. Recently, it also created a Safety and Security Committee. Kokotajlo applauded these promises in one of the posts.

Stable Audio Open Released by Stability AI as an Open-Source Text-to-Audio Generator

Stability AI has released an open-source artificial intelligence (AI) model dubbed Stable Audio Open. Users can leverage the model to generate up to 47 seconds of samples and sound effects. Users can use it to create samples of musical instruments or ambient sounds. The AI model also allows users to generate different variations and styles of a previously generated sample. The open-source model is separate from the AI firm’s Stable Audio platform which allows users to generate up to three-minute-long tracks and is only available as part of a subscription.

Stability AI Releases Stable Audio Open

Stable Audio Open works similarly to many available AI models in the market. Users can write a text prompt for a sample or sound effect and it will generate up to 47 seconds of audio. Stability AI mentioned in a newsroom post that the AI model was released in open source to empower sound designers, musicians, and creative communities.

However, it has limited the use of Stable Audio Open to research and non-commercial usage. To get commercial rights, users will have to purchase a Stability AI membership.

In terms of features, it can generate drum beats, instrument riffs, ambient sounds, foley recordings and other audio samples. Further, users can also fine-tune the model using their custom audio data.

Highlighting an example, the AI firm says a drummer can train the AI on recordings of their drumming sessions and use the model to generate new beats. While the model can generate short audio samples, it is not optimised for full songs, melodies, or vocals.

To train Stable Audio Open, the company used a dataset of 4,86,492 audio recordings sourced from FreeSound and Free Music Archive. It added, “We conducted an in-depth analysis to ensure no unauthorised copyrighted music was present in our training data before we began training.”

However, Stability AI also said that the dataset lacks diversity and all cultures were not equally represented. As a result, the generated samples will reflect biases from the training data. To access the AI model, users can go to the company’s Hugging Face listing, where the open model weights are currently hosted.

Nvidia Tops $3 Trillion in Market Value, Leapfrogging Apple

Nvidia Corp. was already the world’s most valuable semiconductor firm. Now, it’s become the first computer-chip company ever to hit $3 trillion in market capitalization.

The shares of the Santa Clara, California-based firm have rallied roughly 147% this year, adding about $1.8 trillion as the insatiable demand for its chips used to power artificial intelligence tasks skyrockets. On Wednesday, shares rose 5.2% to close at a record $1,224.40, pushing the market value to more than $3 trillion and overtaking Apple Inc. in the process. 

The last time Nvidia was worth more than Apple was in 2002, five years before the first iPhone was released. At the time, both companies were worth less than $10 billion each.

Nvidia has shown no signs of slowing down or letting its rivals catch up; the company’s Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang said the firm plans to upgrade its so-called AI accelerators every year. Wednesday’s stock gain increased his wealth by more than $5 billion to $107.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. 

The rise of generative AI is a new industrial revolution and Nvidia expects to play a major role as the technology shifts to personal computers, Huang told attendees at a keynote address at National Taiwan University.

“We see this sea change as in the very early innings,” said Angelo Zino, senior equity analyst at CFRA Research. 

After the CEO’s keynote, Zino said he likes “the improved visibility” and sees “greater momentum on the GPU/CPU/networking side driving upside to consensus estimates.”

The company has been arguably the biggest beneficiary of a massive flood of AI spending, helping vault the company into a race to claim the title as the world’s most valuable company. The chipmaker still trails Microsoft Corp. by market value, but with shares on a tear Wall Street sees it as only a matter of time before Nvidia overtakes it. 

Apple has struggled this year with the technology giant’s shares pressured by concerns over cooling iPhone demand in China and a fine from the European Union. Shares in the company have only recently turned positive for 2024 as investor sentiment toward the iPhone maker is slowly improving.

Oppo to Introduce More Than 100 Generative AI Features Across Its Smartphone Portfolio This Year

Oppo shared its vision around artificial intelligence (AI) on Wednesday, highlighting its efforts in bringing AI innovations to users and its future plans. Earlier this year, the company introduced several AI features to select smartphones in China with the ColorOS New Year Edition update. Soon after, it introduced these features globally, and expanded it to more devices. The Chinese smartphone maker also announced the establishment of its AI Centre in Shenzhen, from where the company will be driving its AI innovation.

Oppo to Bring Several AI Features to Its Smartphones

The company said in a press release that it will bring AI features to smartphones across price points by the end of 2024. This includes existing AI features, as well as ones that will be announced in the coming months. If the company is to be believed, the number of GenAI features could cross the 100 mark. It has also set up an AI R&D Centre to develop proprietary technologies.

Oppo also announced that it has filed more than 5,399 AI patents worldwide. The list includes 3,796 patents just in AI imaging. Additionally, it is collaborating with tech giants such as Google and Microsoft who are leading the AI race, and chipset manufacturers such as MediaTek and Qualcomm. Some of the areas of AI it is looking to develop capabilities include image processing, computer vision, speech technology, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning.

Highlighting its efforts, the Chinese brand said that it has been developing its own large language models (LLMs) since 2020 and is actively developing large vision models and multimodal models. It also claims to have deployed an LLM with 7 billion parameters directly to smartphones.

“Oppo has pledged not to employ user data for training models and established a robust data security and privacy protection system backed by third-party certifications, end-to-end encryption, and confidential computing technology to ensure user data remains private,” the company said on Wednesday.

Oppo Collaborating With Microsoft, Google for AI Features

The company is working with Microsoft to bring a natural voice and text conversion experience. It is leveraging Microsoft’s Fast Transcription and Neural TTS technologies for this. Oppo said it is already using Azure AI Speech Service for its audio recording transcription feature.

The collaboration is also aimed at building a connection with desktop AI and mobile AI. The company claims that Oppo’s smartphone users will be able to use the desktop version of Copilot to generate content, translate text messages and search addresses on their smartphones via a connected PC.

With MediaTek, the Chinese smartphone brand is developing chipsets with dedicated AI processing units which also known as Neural Procesing Units (NPUs) and accelerators. The company is working with the chipmaker to optimise the AI features for its hardware and software stack. Notably, it is also leveraging Google’s Gemini LLM to power some of the AI features for its flagship devices.
