Steelers host former Pro Bowler in hopes of filling roster hole

The Pittsburgh Steelers are considering signing a veteran linebacker, adding yet another gritty hitter to their defense.

Linebackers joining the Pittsburgh Steelers just make sense. Doesn’t matter how many of them, how old or young they are, just so long as they’re a linebacker.

This offseason, the Steelers made the conscious choice to clean house at the inside linebacker position, letting the likes of Robert Spillane and Devin Bush walk and cutting Myles Jack.

The team is looking to fill out the last remaining spots of their 90-man offseason roster before training camp begins, and one free agent linebacker has caught Pittsburgh’s eye: former Jets’ player Kwon Alexander.

According to Adam Schefter, the Steelers will host Alexander for a visit on Monday night.

Alexander could play a rotational role with Elandon Roberts and Cole Holcomb in the interior defense and would certainly pose as an upgrade on the depth chart.

Steelers reportedly interested in free agent LB Kwon Alexander

The 2015 fourth-rounder split time on four different teams in his NFL career, most recently playing with the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets.

In 2022 with the Jets, Alexander posted 69 tackles along with one forced fumble and one pass defensed; he appeared in all 17 games and established himself as an efficient hitter with a little more consistency than Jets aging vet C.J. Mosley.

Yet Alexander clearly didn’t make enough of an impact for the Jets to re-sign him, and he entered free agency this past offseason as one of the best available linebackers on the market.

The Steelers could benefit from the savvy leadership and know-how of Alexander, though the fit has to be mutual. There’s no telling how Alexander will gel in Teryl Austin’s defensive scheme, and he could still be playing the field at this stage of the offseason.

Stay tuned for more updates on Alexander’s situation in Pittsburgh.
