Senior Manchester United chiefs in panic mode following John Murtough’s exit – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United executives are reportedly fearful about their jobs following the departure of John Murtough.

Earlier today, it emerged that Murtough, the much-maligned Director of Football at Old Trafford elected to step down from his role at the club.

This was subsequently confirmed by United via a public statement.

Murtough’s spell with the club lasted more than 10 years and it’s believed he made the decision to step away to allow the INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe regime to kickstart the new era on a clean slate.

His exit was not an unexpected development considering INEOS have been on a ruthless campaign to implement a new football operations structure.

Already, United secured the services of Omar Berrada, who is set to join in the summer as the club’s next CEO and Richard Arnold’s long-term successor. The Red Devils also remain in talks with Newcastle and Southampton for Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox.

Ashworth and Wilcox have been tipped to assume the sporting director and technical director positions respectively.

As Ratcliffe and his associates continue to reshuffle the pack at United, The Daily Mail reports that panic is spreading among senior figures about the prospects of retaining their jobs.

The newspaper states, “John Murtough’s departure as Manchester United’s football director will do little to quell the sense of uncertainty around the club as INEOS continue to ring the changes.”

It’s understood that multiple heads at United are wondering how their influence and positions at the club could be impacted by the ongoing changes.

“The air of uncertainty around United has coincided with an efficiency drive after INEOS tasked consultancy firm Interpath with driving down costs, a move that will inevitably lead to job cuts.”

The Mail notes that as Murtough was getting ready to leave United, his deputy Andy O’Boyle and chief transfer negotiator Matt Hargreaves were representing the 20-time English champions at the TransferRoom summit in Rome.

The Italy event brought together several key figures in football from around the world to deliberate and discuss on potential deals for the summer.
