Russell Wilson will not let corny catchphrase die despite embarrassing loss

Even after an embarrassing loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Russell Wilson was still pushing his “Broncos Country, let’s ride” catchphrase. 

The Week 5 edition of Thursday Night Football may very well have been the worst game of the season. The Denver Broncos hosted the Indianapolis Colts in a battle of the lowest-scoring offenses in the NFL. Both teams played like it, as neither team could score a touchdown. The Broncos blew a 9-6 lead with the Colts forcing overtime. Indianapolis then won 12-9 after kicking a 48-yard field goal and the Broncos stalling out just a few yards outside of the end zone.

To say that Broncos fans were disappointed by the game is an understatement. Amazon Prime Video cameras showed large groups of Broncos fans leaving Empower Field at Mile High seconds before the game reached overtime. They wanted absolutely no part of watching that live. They will not like what they heard at the postgame press conferences.

Quarterback Russell Wilson talked about how he has to “be better.” As the press conference ended, Wilson said his new catchphrase “Broncos Country, let’s ride.”

When Wilson revealed the catchphrase, it has been ridiculed by many Twitter users. It is a bit cringey. It gets even more cringeworthy when saying it after a brutal 12-9 loss, where Broncos fans in attendance were booing louder and louder after each offensive drive ended with a punt.

In the fourth quarter, Wilson threw two interceptions, including one to cornerback Stephon Gilmore that helped the Colts offense get the ball back and tie the game 9-9. In overtime, facing fourth-and-one, Wilson threw a pass intended for Courtland Sutton that fell incomplete. To make matters worse, wide receiver KJ Hamler had an open path to the end zone, and Wilson did not see them.

Wilson finished the game completing 21-of-39 pass attempts for 274 yards and two interceptions. He was also sacked four times for a loss of 24 yards.

Denver’s next game will be in the national spotlight once again, as they take on the rival Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6 on Monday Night Football. So if the offense struggles again, the outside noise is only going to increase. This was a team, after all, expected to give the Kansas City Chiefs a run for their money in the AFC West.

“Broncos Country, let’s ride?” More like “Broncos Country, let’s ride out of the stadium to beat the traffic.” That is what fans decided on Thursday night.
