With Victor Wembanyama finally about to land his foot in San Antonio and commence a new, bright era of Spurs basketball, Gregg Popovich told reporters that the NBA world will soon seize the glimpse of the generational talent of the French prospect.

According to Tom Orsborn of San Antonio Express-News, the long-time mentor revealed that the 2023 top overall pick will play for the Spurs in the upcoming Summer League, but it is yet to be determined the exact details of his availability.

The Spurs are one of the players in the California Classics in Sacramento on July 3. It will take place four days before the Las Vegas tourney in which all 30 clubs will participate.

“[Wembanya will] participate in Summer League,” Popovich said. “To what degree, we are not sure yet…I have to get a better feel for where his head is.”

Even before officially picking Wembanyama on the draft, reports already surfaced that there’s contemplation around the franchise with regards to the young big man’s play for the Summer League. But in his final game for the Metropolitans 92 last week in French LNB Pro A League Finals, Wembanyama hinted that he would suit up.

His service for France in the FIBA World Cup from late August to early September remains unknown, but Wembanyama already expressed his intentions to also represent his nation on the grand tilt which will take place in the Philippines. For Popovich, the decision will come in and will be agreed on at a later date.

“That is a decision I don’t think has been made yet,” he said about Wembanyama’s activity for France in the World Championships.

Wembanyama becomes the third top overall pick of San Antonio history next to both David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997). Both went on to cement their place as one of the game’s greatest big men to ever play and have solidified themselves as pure-blooded Spurs upon playing their entire respective illustrious career in Texas.

With this, the talented Frenchman is already fully aware of the environment that he will embark in, and has expressed his desire to capture the winning habits of the two all-time greats.

“Victor has already expressed interest in spending time with Timmy, with David (Robinson), that sort of thing. But you won’t see him drilled by them when they are on the court,” he said.

As unique as he is, Wembanyama’s potential is truly immeasurable.

Boasting a once in a lifetime mixture of length, impeccable skills and well rounded play for a basketball player, Wembanyama is about to change the landscape of the entire league as years go by. As such, the winningest head coach only wants his new centerpiece to be true to his craft and carve his very own incredible story.

“He’s Victor, and that’s who we want him to be,” Popovich said.
