Phil Jackson on NBA using leftist slogans in Orlando bubble: “I couldn’t watch that”
The NBA has been taking a stance on some political issues, especially during the Orlando bubble in 2020.
It went as far as players kneeling during the national anthem of the United States and replacing their names on jerseys with leftist slogans.
Phil Jackson, who won six NBA championships as a coach and one title as a player, does not like the league bringing politics to the game.
He reveals that he could not watch the games when there was political messaging everywhere.
Via Nicole Ganglani of Basketball Network:
” … All the teams that could qualify went down there and stayed down there, no audience, and they had things on their back like ‘Justice’ and a funny thing happened like ‘Justice went to the basket and Equal Opportunity knocked him down’… Some of my grandkids thought it was pretty funny to play up those names; I couldn’t watch that,” Phil said.
“The Lakers won that year,” Jackson continued. “They even had slogans on the floor and the baseline. It was trying to cater to an audience or trying to bring a certain audience to the game, and they didn’t know it was turning other people off. People want to see sports as non-political. Politics stays out of the game; it doesn’t need to be there.”
