New Giants favorite emerges in post-Combine mocks

The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine has officially come and gone. The results of that on-field testing have drastically shaken up most mock drafts and that trend will continue throughout free agency as teams address roster needs.

Regardless of what the New York Giants do in free agency, their needs will largely remain the same entering the 2024 NFL draft. They desperately need to add offensive linemen and edge rushers, a top-tier wide receiver, some help in the secondary and, yes, a quarterback.

As it turns out, one quarterback has become a sudden favorite for the Giants after his impressive showing at the Combine. But he hasn’t stolen the show entirely — several are still projecting some other interesting names to Big Blue.

Here’s a round-up of the most recent mock drafts and who they have the Giants selecting.

From Charles Davis:

In a slight surprise, the Giants grab McCarthy to eventually start over again at QB. He might very well sit behind Daniel Jones in 2024 before getting the ball in 2025.

From CBS Sports:

I can’t see Joe Schoen leaving this first round without a quarterback. McCarthy has sky-high upside.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

From ESPN:

The Giants’ receiver group has a bunch of complementary options but lacks a WR1; only Darius Slayton cleared 600 yards last season. Odunze could quickly change that, as he has shown signs of dominant play on the outside. He is sure-handed and can beat coverage in multiple ways. His aggressive “my ball” mentality helped him tie for the most contested catches (24) in the FBS last season, routinely hauling in passes in tight coverage.

From PFF:

Odunze rounds out a three-quarterback, three-receiver start to this mock draft, giving the Giants a potential true No. 1 wide receiver.

Odunze dropped just 3.2% of the catchable passes thrown his way this past season, while his 2.93 yards per route run average ranked eighth among his classmates.

From Lance Zierlein:

I understand that many Giants fans are clamoring for a change at quarterback, but it’s tough to pass up on a chance to grab your first choice at a position of major need. Latham is my top tackle in this draft.

Matt Pendleton-USA TODAY Sports

From The 33rd Team:

In nearly any other draft class, Malik Nabers would be the first receiver drafted and a lock to be a top-five pick. But because of Harrison Jr., he “slides” to No. 6. It’s very reminiscent of when Julio Jones fell to No. 6 in the 2011 NFL Draft because A.J. Green was selected at No. 4 by the Bengals.

The New York Giants need a No. 1 receiver, and Nabers can fill that role immediately. And the last time the Giants took a star receiver from LSU, it worked out well.

Thomas Shea-USA TODAY Sports

From USA TODAY:

Yes, despite his relatively low usage in the passing game at Ann Arbor — where he was surrounded by a tremendous supporting cast on both sides of the ball — his stock seems to continue skyrocketing. Why? Demeanor, accuracy, leadership, athleticism, high ceiling, good decision-making. And he’s a winner (27-1 record with the Wolverines). This situation would also make sense insomuch as McCarthy could sit and learn behind QB Daniel Jones, whom the Giants could more easily cut next offseason — or trade if he plays well in Year 2 of his four-year, $160 million contract.

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

From The Sporting News:

The Giants provide the first twist in the draft. They’ve been on record talking more about taking a QB to replace Daniel Jones as their franchise leader with this high of a pick. McCarthy met with the team at the combine before showing off his live arm with zip and accuracy. He would be a big passing upgrade from Jones and also bring his own brand of tough, athletic playmaking.

From Draft Wire:

Whoever is playing quarterback for the Giants next year will be happy to have a playmaker like Malik Nabers to throw the football to.
