Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Sony Announces Big Day-One Sales

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has enjoyed huge sales success, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game over a single day period.

Insomniac’s PlayStation 5 exclusive sold-through more than 2.5 million copies in 24 hours, Sony revealed. That figure includes pre-order sales of individual units and units bundled with PS5. The sales milestone means Spider-Man 2 has overtaken Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarok at the top of the PlayStation day-one launch sales chart.

“Insomniac Games holds itself to incredibly high standards when it comes to delivering engaging and innovative gameplay experiences,” said Eric Lempel, SVP, Global Marketing, Sales, and Business Operations, Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac Games’ third installment in the franchise for PlayStation. Built from the ground up to take advantage of the unique features of PlayStation 5, the goal was to massively build off the action, storylines, and features from the first two games.

“With an epic storyline, two playable super heroes, a visually-stunning Marvel’s New York, and so much more, this is a game you can get lost in for hours. On behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment, I want to say thank you to the fans – we truly hope you are enjoying your time playing as Peter and Miles in this amazing adventure.”

It remains to be seen whether Spider-Man 2 can beat God of War Ragnarok’s debut week sales tally of 5.1 million copies. God of War Ragnarok launched in November 2022 on PlayStation 4 as well as PS5. It’s worth noting Spider-Man 2 is a PS5 exclusive, and so is selling into a smaller potential install base than Ragnarok did last year.

Spider-Man 2 is a key launch for PlayStation. Sony hopes sales of the game will spark a boost in sales of the PS5 itself, which is required to play. In August, Sony insisted sales of its console could pick up in order to hit its record-breaking target of 25 million PS5s sold for this financial year.

We wrote in our Spider-Man 2 review, “As a sequel in a spectacular series, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both blessed and cursed… Insomniac refines a successful formula of combat and web-swinging without revolutionising either in major ways, making them comfy and familiar with just enough new tweaks and abilities to elevate them to fun new heights. The part that feels like it actually needed a radical rethinking is the open world of New York City, which has been made bigger but not better, with an exhausting checklist of mostly repetitious side activities.”
