Live Updates: Protesters Take Over Building on Columbia Campus

Protesters at Columbia University marched across campus and occupied a building after midnight early Tuesday, hours after the university began suspending students who had failed to leave a pro-Palestinian encampment.

Protesters began marching around campus to chants of “free Palestine” after midnight. Within 20 minutes, some had seized Hamilton Hall, a building that has been at the center of campus protests since the 1960s. A spokesman for Columbia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Universities have struggled to contain protests across the country for more than a week. They are trying to balance free speech rights while limiting disruptions to campuses.

Tuesday promises to be another tense day at Columbia. Students are bracing for possible further action against the pro-Palestinian encampment on campus, and administrators are waiting to see if their decision to suspend demonstrators who remained at the site will blunt the protest.
