The problem with buying older, albeit more experienced players is being felt firsthand by Manchester United this season.

Last season’s star double act- Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, look like they have aged by a decade in just one campaign but that’s just how quickly modern football travels.

As a result, a midfield overhaul is on the agenda in the summer with potentially both departing and younger options coming in.

As per GIVEMESPORT, the player leading that line of midfield targets is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Joao Gomes.

The 23-year-old Brazilian joined Wolves in January last year and has quickly established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet there.

With his ability to play both, central as well as defensive midfield, he marries the skillset of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen while being almost a decade younger.

The report states that United hope to sell both Eriksen and Casemiro in the summer and the freed-up wages and transfer fees should go a long way towards funding this capture.

Alongside Gomes, Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is on the shortlist but his potential arrival is contingent on sales United can manage.

Gomes, on the other hand, has gained many admirers at Old Trafford with his all-action style of play and remains firmly atop the shortlist.

The player’s contract expires in 2028 with a club option to extend it by another year so it could be a long and arduous negotiation process for United.

Things get trickier still for United as defensive reinforcements are also on the agenda while buying a backup/partner for Rasmus Hojlund is the main priority in the summer.

Therefore, while making Gomes the top target is all well and good, United might have to be ready with a secondary plan in case they have to pivot due to finances.
