Manchester United’s lacklustre performances lately have left them far behind in the race for a place in the Champions League.

Off the pitch, however, the club’s hierarchy are showing promising signs, making proactive moves to ensure they regain ground on their rivals this summer.

The Red Devils’ recruitment team appears to be shaping up nicely, with INEOS working to bring in both Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox ahead of the summer transfer window. And that is not it, the new bosses at Old Trafford intend to finalise another deal by this summer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, United are now “pushing in talks” to extend Kobbie Mainoo’s contract by this summer, having already held initial discussions in February.

The academy midfielder has proven to be a breath of fresh air in an otherwise uninspiring campaign, impressing Erik ten Hag, Gareth Southgate, and the United faithful in equal measure with his technical ability.

His exploits in the middle of the park have also raised eyebrows of the most influential figures at United, who now want to reward him with a new bumper deal.

The Italian journalist adds that INEOS want the 18-year-old to be “one of the faces” of their new project.

They intend to reflect their vision for Mainoo by offering him a salary increase as well as ‘several add-ons.’

If INEOS really intend to build their project around players like Mainoo, they need to make sure this summer that they sign players who complement his talents and help him play his best football.

Mainoo is capable of impressing in all phases of play, but his dynamism is best used when he is afforded the freedom to push higher up the pitch.

As such, United should attempt to bring in a new defensive midfielder. Interestingly, a recent report from Portugal suggested they are willing to go all out to get their man.

United have reportedly set their sights on Benfica midfielder João Neves, and it is claimed they are ready to spend more than €100 million to secure the services of the Portuguese sensation, offering the tantalising prospect one of the most talented young midfield pairings in world football at Old Trafford next season.
