Horrifying final moments of Olympian Melissa Hoskins allegedly killed by world champion cyclist husband Rohan Dennis revealed

Horrifying details have emerged surrounding the final moments of an Olympic cyclist who was allegedly struck and killed by her athlete husband outside their family home in Adelaide, Australia.

Cycling world champ and Olympian Rohan Dennis was arrested and charged over the death of his wife after emergency services were called to the scene in the luxurious suburb of Medindie in Adelaide’s inner north around 8pm on Saturday.

Melissa Hoskins, 32, was found with serious injuries and rushed to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

She later died from her injuries in hospital.

Police will claim Hoskins jumped onto the hood of their $47,000 4WD Volkswagen Amarok ute and grabbed at a door handle while Dennis allegedly drove until she fell to the ground, The Adelaide Advertiser reports.

The mother of two may have been dragged some distance along the street, with the alleged incident believed to have been caught on neighboring security cameras.

Investigations into what sparked the alleged incident remain ongoing.

Detectives and Major Crash officers arrested Dennis and charged the two-time cycling time trial world champion with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.

He has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.

A police statement surrounding the Medindie incident called for anyone with more information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Friends say Dennis and Ms Hoskins, who share two young children and have been married since 2018, were planning their post-retirement life in South Australia.

Dennis had only ended his 16-year career last year, and the pair had considered launching their own Adelaide Hills vineyard, according to The Advertiser.

The couple both competed at multiple Olympics, with Dennis winning a silver medal in 2012 for the team pursuit and a bronze in 2020 for road cycling.

Melissa Hoskins, who competed under her maiden name but went by Melissa Dennis on Facebook, had only just missed out on a medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics.

Meanwhile, the final photo shared of the family on Dennis’ Instagram page has been flooded with messages from fans sharing their disbelief and devastation at the news.

The photo shared by Dennis on Boxing Day showed him smiling with Hoskins and their two children in front of a Christmas tree that still had unwrapped gifts underneath it.

Dennis in December also shared photos of him smiling with Hoskins and another one of their two children meeting Santa.

The 33-year-old also shared photos from the family’s holiday to Egypt in November.

A host of sporting organizations and fellow cyclists have paid tribute following Ms Hoskins’ tragic death.

Among them is the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), who Ms Hoskins represented at the 2012 and 2016 Games.

“The AOC has expressed the utmost sadness at the loss of Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins after the tragic events in Adelaide,” it said in a post on X.

“Our condolences go to Melissa’s family, friends and the cycling community at this extremely difficult time.”

Marne Fechner, chief executive of AusCycling, the national governing body for the sport in Australia, labelled Ms Hoskins’ death as a “tragic incident”.

“Melissa, a mother, daughter, and wife, was also a champion cyclist who thrilled and inspired us with her exquisite skills on the track and road,” Ms Fechner said in a statement.

“Melissa began her competitive cycling career at just 16, and by the time she retired at the age of 25 she had shown the world that she was an athlete of rare prowess.

“Melissa described her team Pursuit Gold Medal at the 2015 UCI Track Cycling World Championships as the highlight of her career, but for the rest of us, the highlight was just having her around.”

Retired track cyclist, Anna Meares who has also been appointed chef de mission of the Australian Olympic Team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, posted a condolence message on her social media channels.

“I have a very heavy heart,” Ms Meares said in a post to X.

“My thoughts are with their children, family and fellow friends.

“This is a very difficult and tragic time. RIP”

Ms Hoskins’ former team, GreenEDGE, which has since rebranded to Jayco-AlUla, similarly expressed its grief at the news.

“Our thoughts are with her family and friends and the whole cycling community at this deeply saddening time,” a statement from the team said.
