‘Gutted’ Maguire misses out on England squad with Grealish also snubbed

Harry Maguire has missed out on England’s Euro 2024 squad, with Jack Grealish also set to be snubbed.

Manchester United defender Maguire has confirmed he will not travel to Germany after failing to prove his fitness to manager Gareth Southgate.

Grealish, who like Maguire has been a regular in the past, is also widely reported to have missed out after a frustrating club campaign for Manchester City.

They follow James Maddison, Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah, who have also left the Three Lions camp after failing to make the cut.

Maguire: ‘I am absolutely gutted’

Maguire has been a particular favourite of Southgate’s in central defence, starting regularly in both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and at Euro 2020.

The defender wrote on X: “I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.

“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it.

“Simply, I am absolutely gutted. For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me.

“If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.”

With Maguire out, Lewis Dunk looks the likely partner for John Stones in England’s opener against Serbia after starting Monday’s win at St James’ Park.

Grealish out, Eze and Bowen in?

Grealish’s exclusion looks to be a result of a disappointing campaign for City in which he has struggled for fitness and form.

The forward had arrived early to training to prove his worth to Southgate and bolstered his hopes after a lively cameo against Bosnia and Herzegovina in which he assisted Trent Alexander-Arnold’s goal.

But the Three Lions boss looks to have favoured other attacking options, with Ebere Eze and Jarrod Bowen’s hopes of flying to Germany seemingly being handed a huge boost.
