Gregg Popovich expected to ink new deal with Spurs, to become highest paid coach
Gregg Popovich’s contract has expired following the 2022-23 season, but the San Antonio Spurs are operating on the possibility that their long time mentor will still stick around for one more season, sources told LJ Ellis of Spurs Talk.
Ellis added that with French wunderkind Victor Wembanyama just a few days away from becoming a Spur, this could heavily entice Popovich to remain in San Antonio on a long-term viewpoint.
A source told Ellis that there is an expectation that Popovich will ink a three-year deal that will pay him $14 million annually. With this, it would allow him to edge new Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams in the leaderboard of the highest paid coaches in the association.
In hindsight, Popovich extending his run on San Antonio with Wembanyama at the front of the franchise’s new era can only mean something special in all of the sides involved. The generational prospect will savor the Spurs’ development program that is being touted as one of the best, while the hall of fame coach will have that golden opportunity to handle a once in a lifetime player before ultimately hitting retirement.
