Georgia football lands Bucs HC Todd Bowles’ son, Troy Bowles

Todd Bowles’ son Troy Bowles is taking his four-star commitment to the Georgia football team.

As the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, Troy Bowles knows where he will be coached up to perfection in college, as the four-star linebacker has decided to Commit to the G to play for Kirby Smart’s Georgia football program.

Bowles committed to Georgia on Saturday afternoon, picking the Dawgs over the likes of Ohio State and Oklahoma. According to the 247Sports Composite, Bowles is the No. 2 linebacker in the country, the No. 11 player from Florida and the No. 44 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class. Bowles officially visited Athens on June 10 with Glenn Schumann as his primary recruiter.

For Bowles, Georgia made all the sense in the world to him. The combination of Athens’ small-town vibes, as well as Georgia being essentially a pro football factory at the linebacker position made this an incredibly easy choice for him.

“The development and NFL production definitely stood out,” said Bowles to On3’s Fawcett. “The supporting staff on and off the field they have as far as academics and football wise.”

Obviously, the biggest thing here is Bowles’ relationship with his primary recruiter. Schumann has been in Athens for years as an up-and-coming, defensive-minded coach on Smart’s staff. With last year’s defensive coordinator Dan Lanning taking over his own program in Oregon, one can argue Schumman will be the next branch to be sprouting off Smart’s defensive coaching tree.

And it is not just Schumann. Georgia has done its best in the last decade-plus to take Linebacker U honors away from Penn State. Whether it is guys like Jarvis Jones and Leonard Floyd from the Mark Richt years, to Butkus Award winners like Roquan Smith and Nakobe Dean who have starred under Smart, if you are a linebacker who wants to make it to the NFL, Georgia is the place for you.

“I have a very good relationship with the staff,” continued Bowles. “I’m closest with Coach Schu because that’s my position coach, and he’s been recruiting me this whole time. He’s always been honest with me, that’s why I respect him so much and he really understands his players.

Ultimately, there is a lot of pressure on Bowles, given who his father is. He also has an older brother Todd playing for, interestingly enough, former Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano up at Rutgers. Football may be in his blood, but Bowles has a chance to be the best player in his family if he lives up to lofty expectations at Georgia. It may take a few seasons, but it could happen for him.

It is not every day an NFL head coach’s son commits to a college football power, but here we are!
