Fisherman Sandals Are Dividing the Who What Wear UK Office
As the story goes with many trends that become instant hits, at some point (in this case, last summer), a certain sandal style quickly became the footwear of choice for stylish dressers. The shoe in question? Fisherman sandals. Their rise to prominence was swift, becoming a staple for those seeking an easy-to-style option when the temperature rises. You could spot them everywhere, and they became one of the sure signs that summer had officially begun. However, their sudden popularity led to questions about their enduring appeal. So, with summer 2024 fast approaching and so many fresh pairs of fisherman sandals on the market, you might be wondering if they’re still in style.
We say yes. Despite the initial buzz, these classic strappy sandals have managed to maintain their status, even though they’re not for everyone. Influencers and celebrities alike continue to embrace them, showcasing fresh ways to style them and proving their versatility. Monikh Dale and Lois Sterling have both paired The Row’s coveted pair with flowy dresses for a more bohemian vibe, whilst others wear them with tailored trousers or jeans—there’s no shortage of styling inspiration. Yet for some, fisherman sandals remain a polarising choice, with their chunky silhouette and multiple straps perceived as lacking in sophistication.
They’ve even divided the Who What Wear UK office. Acting affiliates editor Florrie Alexander is a staunch advocate, proclaiming, “I love how fisherman sandals easily add a laid-back, summer-ready vibe to any outfit. Plus, they’re incredibly comfortable for all-day wear.” Her sentiment resonates with a few others in the office who share her enthusiasm for the trend. Rebecca Rhys-Evans, senior fashion and beauty editor for branded content, is a self-described “cult-sandal girl”, but even she can’t deny their appeal. “As someone who loves a thong kitten heel, I tried a pair of fishermans for a story on the site and have since swapped out my trainers for them in the summer as they are so comfortable.”
However, I for one was more than a little hesitant to warm up to the sandal style. As a classic dresser, I found them a little too chunky and casual for my taste; the wide straps and thick sole (which I think is often too thick) clash with my preference for sleek and refined pieces. This was until I found a more subtle pair that worked with my minimal wardrobe, and I can’t deny how they elevated a recent outfit, which consisted of a black maxi T-shirt dress and tote bag. So, it seems fisherman sandals just might win me over yet.
Love them or loathe them, fisherman sandals are showing no signs of disappearing right now, and it’s clear that their enduring popularity speaks to their timeless appeal and adaptability. So, whether you’re a devoted fan like Florrie or a former sceptic like myself, the debate rages on: are fisherman sandals done? We think they’ll always have a place in our summer footwear collection, so if you agree, keep scrolling for the styles we recommend.
