Cavs air support to Ricky Rubio as vet PG set to take mental health break
More than anybody else, the Cleveland Cavaliers got Ricky Rubio’s back on the point guard’s quest to attain a much-needed mental health recovery.
On behalf of the entire franchise, Cavs team president Koby Altman expressed his support for Rubio as the veteran floor general intends to take a hiatus from professional basketball in order to focus on his mental well-being.
“We were informed today by Ricky and his representation that he has decided to step away from his illustrious basketball career to focus on his mental health at this time. We understand how difficult of a decision this was for him and will balance providing whatever support we can while simultaneously respecting Ricky’s request for privacy,” Altman penned in a statement.
Rubio, who was named as a participating player in Spain’s 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup showcase, shocked the entire basketball community on Saturday upon announcing his decision to temporarily leave the pro scene. Nevertheless, he received nothing but an outpouring of love and comfort from fans and several league players as he is now set to embark on the path towards personal healing.
Rubio has been playing professional basketball at age 14 and was considered a hoops prodigy in Spain. He went on to get drafted as the No. 5 overall pick of the 2009 Draft and play for five different teams in his 12-year NBA career.
He made a return to Cleveland in last year’s offseason by signing a three-year, $18MM deal with them. Rubio missed the initial parts of the 2022-23 regular season as he took his time to recover from his ACL injury.
The 32-year-old averaged 5.2 points and 3.5 assists as he logged in 33 regular season matches for the Cavs.
